Day 3: Go on a Mud Volcanoes & Mosque Private Tour

Why Personalized Travel Planning Beats AI Like ChatGPT: Insights from travelpreneur Aditya Darooka

Many people have started to use AI for trip planning. However, travelpreneur Aditya Darooka feels that may not be the right approach. Why?

AI curates itineraries based on information from multiple sources on the internet. It doesn’t know who you are and what you like to do. Sure, you can ask it to add your preferences and it will tailor the itinerary accordingly. But, is the itinerary doable as recommended? Will you have the time and energy to do all the things recommended by AI? If not, what should you remove and what should you add. There is so much information out there.

Tejal (a client of Gottaholiday) recently booked a trip to Finland with us to see the Northern lights. They wanted to do a full day trip to Tallinn from Helsinki and then take a 12-hour overnight train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi on the same evening. While it is doable, Gottaholiday didn’t recommend it. They suggested that Tejal take a day train the following day instead of the night train since they would be exhausted after a full day tour and at night time, they would miss out on the scenic beauty of the landscape which they would be able to see during the day. This, of course, was also after giving due consideration to the fact that they had the time to spare and the cost was still going to be within their budget.

A similar search for a 7-day Northern lights tour in Finland on one of the popular AI engines like chatGPT gives an itinerary starting from Rovaniemi and ending in Rovaniemi. This again as per Aditya is not ideal.  He says, “Flight tickets to Rovaniemi are with 2 stops and very expensive. We recommend that our clients start with Helsinki and then take a train or flight to Rovaniemi after a couple of days.”

This kind of personalized approach is not there with AI. Gottaholiday also recommends their clients to include a cruise from Helsinki to Stockholm or vice versa in the itinerary which is not suggested by AI

The next important point to consider with results from AI is whether to book your package yourself or go through a travel agent of your choice. “While you can and should use AI to enhance your knowledge if you so wish, if are going to a travel agent, then you might as well consider their expertise and let them plan a trip as per your preferences with the benefit of their prior experience of the destination,” says Aditya.

If you are someone who prefers to book on your own, then you should read about the experience of Mr. Parth who travelled to Europe via GottaHoliday.

Parth M, traveled to Europe recently with his wife and 2-year old daughter. All bookings, including his flights were done by Gottaholiday. Parth’s flight was via Dubai. As fate would have it, this was the period when Dubai was flooded due to the unprecedented rains and he was stranded with his family at the airport for 2 days. Not only did they have to bear the inconvenience of being in limbo for 48 hours without confirmation of IF and when they would be able to go forward, but it also meant that their 9-day holiday got reduced to 7 days. Airlines were not answering calls due to huge call volumes. He was constantly in touch with Gottaholiday team. After 2 days, the airline asked him if he is ready to goto Geneva instead of Zurich, he called Gottaholiday and their team confirmed that he should go for it. This meant our team had to juggle the bookings to start from Geneva.

After all the chaos that ensued, they arrived in Switzerland with a 2-day delay, harrowed and tired. Add to that, their baggage was delayed and there was no confirmation from the airline about when they would get their bags. Parth purchased clothes and supplies necessary for him and his family in the cities that they were visiting and on our advice, retained the invoices and credit card payslips. It took Gottaholiday days of follow ups and jostling with the airline but  managed to get him his luggage just 2 days before his trip was due to end. Gottaholiday also managed to reschedule Parth’s return tickets to 2 days later, ensuring that his original plan of 9 days remained 9 days. All the sightseeing tours that were scheduled for the first two days were rescheduled to the last 2 days WITHOUT any Extra charges!!!

In addition, Gottaholiay team also managed to get the approx EUR 1000 that he had spent in first 5 days towards buying new clothes, food etc. reimbursed by the insurance company. The total refund received from insurance company was approx ₹250,000 under baggage delay, change in plan, and various other heads !!! “Some may think this is a one off case, but we have seen travellers face an insane variety of problems over the years. I believe no AI and online portal and no IVR will go through this for you. Neither will they take your frantic calls when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere. No technology will empathise with you. Technology is an enabler.
