favorite thing about them
Have you seen how they animated this guy? I LOVE everything about how they animated this guy. From his big temper tantrums, to how he jumps on your lap like a cat, to his kill animations. Genuinely it's a master class in acting. He really comes off as the extreme of both a manchild and a mafioso, just in body language alone. I definitely think they knocked it out of the park with him.
least favorite thing about them
Am I just bad at the game? Yes. Franco has the most kills on me by a mile. That man will be chasing some other person, see me across the map, and decide, "You know what? I need to shoot this clown instead." One time he was opening the locker on my friend and I went over to laugh but I must have stepped on glass because HE STOPPED MID-ANIMATION TO GRAB ME INSTEAD. HE HATES ME.
So I don't play his levels as often as others, and maybe hearing Franco stomping around makes me more scared than most other things in Trials. If we're allowed to be open and honest here!

The Gooseberry and Franco art is cute. I SEE THE VISION. I think if Franco could not be...like that, there is great opportunity for them both here to explore their preferred dynamics. The problem is that Sinyala is not a safe space for this and Franco is like that. But we can play, we can imagine anything.
I need to know more about his time in the CIA. Badly. Did he make any friends? DO YOU ALL REMEMBER HE WAS AN ASSET FOR THE CIA???

For me, it’s less of a specific ship that bothers me and more when people misunderstand what Franco is seeking in a relationship. I get what he looks like and says, but it’s really clear Franco is not actually submissive, even if he’s placing himself into that role. Even THAT is a method of control. He HATES not having control.

I truly think he's drunk most of the time, if that wasn’t canon already. I think his vision was already blurry due to the exotropia, I'm sure alcohol is not helping much with that. And yet he can shoot me well enough, so! Whatever works for him I suppose!
unpopular opinion
I like that Easterman favored him actually, at least for a little while. That was in-character for everyone.
I will say, I don’t know where else to place this. But his first scene where you walk up on him on the boat in the Docks, before he comes out and shoots his prisoners, is genuinely one of the most unsettling moments of the entire series for me. Like one of THE moments that sticks with me and puts a pit in my stomach. The humor and horror of it all. It’s really good!!!!! It just might be shocking that THIS is one of my personal big scary moments with Outlast, haha.

favorite thing about them
His voice acting is great! Of course! I think it’s what really elevated him to the status he has today, as a primary face for Outlast Trials. You can tell the VA is having fun with it, the drawl is ridiculous.
I think all his big intros in Kill the Snitch and even Vindicate the Guilty are iconic. I think Kill the Snitch is still the gold standard for Prime Asset introductions.
Also I like his silly run cycle, I love that he huffs and puffs and winds up into it like a cartoon.
least favorite thing about them
My biggest issue with Coyle is that he’s very surface-level in his design*. He is a cop and his gimmick…is being a racist cop. His Trials? That’s right. Themed around him being a cop.
If Coyle truly gets a new outfit in the new map like the teaser suggests, that proves to me this being his only identity hasn’t been enough for generating new level ideas. Personally I would’ve pushed a different aspect of his character other than his rural background for this. But that background DOES separate him from the rest of the Primes, so I do see the utility in that choice.
*This is not me saying ‘he has no depth’ in his writing. It's a wider issue about how he's been conceptualized and implemented thus far.

His singing of the government agencies and how he sing-giggles "U.S.A." all smug at the end. He does it every single time I play in his maps.

Coyle makes a lot of sense within the Weird Sinyala Coworker-Family dynamic with the other Primes that I see from time-to-time. I feel like a lot of the Primes wouldn't immediately try to talk to the others for XYZ reasons, but Coyle is so in-your-face, he does not shut up. He is going to talk to you (threatening).
I do think his relation to Perry is really funny, and it reveals a lot about his own character. Coyle is not ignorant to the world, he's extremely hateful and fearful of it. There is a difference.

I said my one piece already w/ Liliya, but Coyle out of everyone just has the most random ships out there. I do think if you ship Coyle with a Black character you're going to hell. 🙂↕️

His outfit looks like THAT, he had to have had a big hand in designing it, right? He really loves getting to play in Sinyala, that much is clear. He was playing in every other role in his life beforehand anyways. As a husband, as a serviceman. At least here he can be upfront with his desires and wants, and he gets some shiny new toys out of it. (I also wonder how much that connects to his time in war, where civility is no longer the highest priority, but when you go home you're expected to just be a normal human being again. Not that he was normal. You understand what I mean.)

I genuinely get so uncomfortable when people post excessively about “Pre-Murkoff Coyle.” You mean Active-KKK-Member Coyle? At least regular Coyle is stuck in hell, you know? He’s our problem. That is not the case with Pre-Murkoff.
I would also say that I do believe Coyle being a supreme bigot is important to the Sinyala ecosystem, given Easterman himself is a bigoted asshole father figure. Coyle, or at least a character like him, would have had to be here to serve in this role.

Cheating but since I don't talk about it enough, the cigarette belt accessory is genuinely one of those 10/10 character design details that makes Trials stand out! It's so SILLY, HE COULD JUST KEEP THEM IN A BOX IN ONE OF HIS MANY POCKETS. BUT NO, Coyle has to rub it in and slot them in INDIVIDUALLY, HE TAKES TIME TO DO THIS, because he knows the Reagents don't really have much access to cigarettes. Literally tempting them to try and steal.
