“Imelda Staunton is wonderful. She makes your job easy because all you have to do is respond. It’s all there.” - Lara Pulver ↳ Imelda Staunton and Lara Pulver in ‘Gypsy’ (2015)
blckberryjoy:
Sally gave Ann what might be considered a look rather full of pity. Perhaps she should envy the ones who simply did as they were told and swallowed a joy every hour on the hour. But she simply could not bring herself to desire, on any level, in any form, a life so devoid of truth and meaning. It took all the … well. The joy out of being alive. They were just the living dead, shuffling through the damp streets and thinking this was real happiness.
It was sad. No, the ones who she envied, deep down, in a place she’d never admit, a place not to be talked about at parties or examined closely in the light of day, were her sisters. Gone before the whole place went to hell. She liked to think that something like heaven might exist somewhere out there, and they were there now, laughing and throwing down flower petals and thinking what a fool she was, that she was stuck in this wasteland without a family or a direction or a sense of purpose.
“I think all the fashions stopped being different a few years ago. Have you seen the trend board in the office lately? It’s all the same colors and-and tweed.”
She shuddered at the last thought, and carefully popped a Sunshine between pink lips, the shape and color of the pill hidden by glove-clad hands. “I just keep coming back because hardly anywhere else pays anything anymore. Got to stay in my milk and fresh meat, after all.” She offered a half-hearted smile and placed her hand over Ann’s on the bar top. “But if it’ll make you feel better, I promise I’ll have a sitting with you before the new season. Come up with something gorgeous, absolutely brillo. Cross my heart.”
Ann noticed that look, and it gave her some sense of familiarity. Perhaps if she wasn’t so high on Joy, she might have noticed that the look of pity reminded her of the way Ian, her now late husband, had looked at her. He had been a downer when alive, and he would always look at his wife with pity. He would try convincing her to stop taking Joy, which would only end in them fighting. She would try convincing him to take Joy, again ending in fighting. She thought about Ian for a moment, and then immediately she reached into her pocket for a strawberry Joy.
“Well, thankfully I like variety, and it carries over into my designs.” she murmured, popping the pill in her mouth. Thoughts of Ian then faded and she felt less weight again. “I assure you, while my designs may have some vintage styles, they are always new and different, certainly different than what everyone else is wearing.”
Ann was wearing one of her own designs. It was slightly reminiscent of the fifties, but with a modern touch to it. It had a to-the-knee flaired skirt attached to a dress that was short-sleeved. It was a soft navy blue color, a thin white belt at the waist, the dress having an off-the-shoulder bardot neckline. There was also a faint floral pattern sewn into the bottom of the skirt with dark green, almost black leaves. Some complained that Ann’s designs weren’t modern enough in keeping up with the current trends of the sixties, but they were unique, beautiful, and recognizable as an Ann Fleming design; people could usually agree on that. Ann didn’t exactly like the current trends, not because she didn’t like new things, she certainly did, Ann had updated her own fashion through the fashions of the thirties, the forties, the fifties, but in the sixties she didn’t like the necklines that were popular, nor did she like the common patterns and Ann agreed with Sally, tweed was awful.
With Sally’s touch, she smiled softly, giving a gentle nod. “Well, good.” Ann gently squeezed her hand. “If you ever need anything, let me know, alright? I know times aren’t the easiest, but I must be sure to take good care of one of my favorite models.”

you are darkredviolet #600B40 Your dominant hues are red and magenta. You love doing your own thing and going on your own adventures, but there are close friends you know you just can't leave behind. You can influence others on days when you're patient, but most times you just want to go out, have fun, and do your own thing. Your saturation level is high - you get into life and have a strong personality. Everyone you meet will either love you or hate you - either way, your goal is to get them to change the world with you. You are very hard working and don't have much patience for people without your initiative. Your outlook on life is slightly darker than most people's. You try to see things for what they are and face situations honestly. You'd rather get to the point than look for what's good.

hcppyface:
what an odd and curious thing to say - the blonde woman is inclined to delve further, as is her duty as an executive committee member. the welfare of wellington wells rested on her elite shoulders. “pray tell,” sylvia asks with a honeyed tone, “why would you play a game about people popping their joy?” slyvia approaches closer with a glint in her eyes, “and it’s not really a game if you’re playing by yourself.” the younger keeps the smile on her face before she indulges annie’s question, “i am looking for something to update my wardrobe. my husband has been complaining about my lack of dresses.”
Ann had a simple and to the point answer for that. “I do my best creative thinking with a bit of liquor and entertainment; I need new designs, and we all pop a lot of Joy, so it’s the quickest way to get a buzz.” she admitted with a soft chuckle. “Though I don’t quite have any entertainment yet today. A game played alone, only because everyone today seems incredibly busy.”
“I suppose I’ll have to wait until this evening when hopefully more people are off work. Until then, after this, I’ll probably continue to work on current designs.” In regards to her request, the brunette gave a moment of consideration to things like Sylvia’s hair color, eye color, skin color, and work, thinking of what styles and colors might work best for her in particular. “Of course. Are you looking for casual dresses or something more formal like evening gowns, cocktail dresses? Also, would you like something already made or would you like something designed exclusively for you?” Ann grabbed her note pad, beginning to write her thoughts down in terms of what might look best on Sylvia.
daniforgets:
“ I can imagine ! Oh, speaking of Joy … ” Dani reached into the pocket of her lab coat and pulled out the chocolate pill. “ Cheers ! ” She popped it into her mouth and smiled, content.
“ Work, usually. I absolutely love my job. I’d be there right now if my supervisor hadn’t sent me on break ! What do you do? ”
“Cheers.” Ann smiled in return, taking her small bottle of vodka and bringing it to her lips. With the other’s popped Joy, Ann drank a sip of the liquor. “Oh, I love my job too. Though mine is less structured. I’m a fashion designer. When I’m not working on a current design, I’m trying to stay stimulated to feel creativity, which hopefully allows me to think of new designs.”
“And it turns out that my creativity is best when I’m having fun, enjoying life, taking my Joy while not particularly sober.”
blckberryjoy:
“Honestly, Annie?” Sally leaned in close to the other woman, putting on latex-clad hand on her shoulder, eyes darting around to make sure no one else was around who could hear, “It doesn’t sound very happy, but I just like getting paid.” She chuckled to herself and mentally counting how many Sunshine she had left in her pocket, if she could afford another just then and still have enough for the fitting and the trip back to the Village. “I’ll wear whatever you lovely people decide is right for introducing the fashions of nineteen sixty four.” She was only there to be a doll and not a voice, after all.
Ann shrugged. Personally, she didn’t care what other people did. They could be running or out after curfew or off their Joy; as long as they didn’t drag her into anything she didn’t want to be dragged into, she let people do what they wanted and pretended to know nothing if asked. In regards to Sally’s thoughts, however, she did feel the need to protest. “Nonsense. If you don’t like it, then what’s the point?” she murmured. “See, this is why I don’t like you working with those other cads in this business. They could give fuck all about you but I like treating my models like people instead of mannequins. If I wanted mute mannequins without opinions, I would get mannequins and I wouldn’t let anyone stop me from doing so.”
Maybe it was because of Ann being an intense extrovert. “Besides, how do I know if what I’m designing is even good unless I get actual input? Now, if you won’t give me that, at least tell me truthfully if you hate any of them, and choose three that you like. Keep in mind, I still need to tailor them properly to your figure and add the final touches. Do you more like simplicity or extravagance? Also, if my rambling starts to annoy you, feel free to politely tell me to shut it.”
Almost all the pieces were dresses, since it was what Ann almost exclusively designed. However, there were some skirts and blouse ensembles, some with eye catching color, some that were black or white or grey, or a combination of any three. Some outfits were simple, elegant, while others varied between glamorous, lavish, or gaudy.
blckberryjoy:
“Me? I’ve just come in for a fitting. Don’t know how I got talked into doing another cover.” The clothes they put her in were always so hideous, but it wasn’t as if she could say such things to Ann without hurting the other woman’s feelings. And tact was a treasure these days. “You haven’t happened to see Martin around here, have you? He was supposed to meet me upstairs in the shop, but I’ve even gone in all the beds in the back, round by the radiator and everything, and I can’t find him anywhere.”
“Well, hopefully I can get you in something you like. Perhaps something with a splash of color this time.” Ann suggested, standing to walk over to her wardrobe of nearly finished pieces. “No, I haven’t seen him. Frankly, not many people have passed through today. Probably why I’m not drunk yet.”
“What colors do you even like? I don’t ever see you in anything colorful. Unless you don’t really like color, then I’ll think of something else.”

“Sounds like quite the little drinking game. How’d you reckon you’ll be come fifteen minutes?”
“I happen to like my job. In fact, I’m seldom far from my notebooks. There are so many improvements to be made!”
“Oh, don’t get me wrong, I love my job too. But designing requires creativity. You’re an architect, aren’t you? That involves design, some creativeness, you must understand to some extent. For me to be creative, personally, I can’t be bored. ”
“In fifteen minutes? We’ll see. Depends on how many people pass by. Really, I need something much more stimulating. Something fun. Real fun needs people, though.”

“I’m currently playing a fun little drinking game. Every time I see someone take a Joy, I take a drink. I’m already quite tipsy after five minutes.”
“But that’s just boredom. And what might you be doing to pass the time?”
LARA PULVER — FEMALE | Lovely day for it! Did you know, I just saw ANN FLEMING in APPLE HOLM today? Guess SHE didn’t go on holiday after all. What a relief! It was always good to see HER around THE PARADE. I did get a bit worried, though, that all you would ever hear outside HER place was ONLY THE LONELY by ROY ORBISON on the record player over and over, and never anyone talking. After 45 years as a fashion designer, it’d been a shame for HER to just vanish like that! Glad Foggy Jack didn’t get HER, at least. D'you think SHE’d be up for a nice cup of tea and some STRAWBERRY JOY?

brief bio
With Joy comes hazy memories, so all Ann really remembers about herself is this: She hadn’t worked a real job before coming to Wellington Wells, she had been married three times, her first husband she married at seventeen years old, who died during the earlier stages of the war; her second husband divorced her before Joy was created; her final husband, Ian Fleming, “went on holiday”. (He died of his second heart attack.) With her first husband, Shane, she had one child, (In reality, she had two) a boy named Raymond who was eleven during the German occupation. (The Joy suppresses her memories of Fionn, her daughter, who was nine.)
Her son is now twenty-eight, acting as Ann’s assistant. He is the one who brings her supplies for her designer clothing business.
Ann is known as “Good Time Annie” to some social circles. Hedonistic at her core, she loves partying and drinking and having fun, basking in life’s pleasures and constantly distracting herself. Most people don’t know, however, that she also enjoys pain, suffering, punishment, like that of the Reform Club. Without an invitation, nor a letter of transit however, she doesn’t attend. Instead she finds lovers who will do this for her. If not a lover, then someone paid to be. But to most people she appears outgoing, kind, happy, without a care in the world, only sometimes letting any snarkiness or cynicism show in her personality.
For the most part Ann tries to enjoy life as best as she can, keep her head down, take her Joy, listen to Uncle Jack, and be a good citizen. She knows one wrong move could bring serious consequences.
