Not Too Late [Shane & Lori]
He gave a soft sigh. âProbably got a few even you ainât heard yet.â He pulled back, meeting her eyes again. He wiped at her cheeks with his thumb and tried to give her a smile to cheer her up. âAnd look at this way, Lori? He didnât know the world like this. And thatâs some kind of blessinâ for damn sure.â
He glanced away from her, looking out around them at the quarry. âWeâll make this work. We gotta.â
Lori closed her eyes, enjoying the feeling of Shane's hands running through her hair. She never realized how much she'd missed that feeling-- or really, just someone's touch-- until she hadn't had it in so long.
"You know, you're right. I've never thought of that before," she nodded gravely, voice tight. The thought of Rick faced with a walker-- maybe someone he knew, like elderly Mrs. Grady who had lived next door-- made her stomach churn. She wasn't sure he'd be able to pull the trigger.
"We're already making it work. You're helping make it work. We'd probably all be gone if it weren't for you." She reached out touch Shane's arm-- half to reassure him, half just to feel him again.
"Hey," she said, trying to get his attention back with something a little more light-hearted. "All that stuff you said about Rick... all the years I've known you I didn't pin you as a softie, Deputy Walsh. You're just full of surprises, aren't you?"
"I was an idiot to think youâd changed." - from Shane (thefrogwhisperer)
Lori dropped the dish rag and ran a soapy hand through her hair in frustration. God damnit, she was always forgetting when her hands were still wet.Â
"Look, I donât know who you think you know enough to say they changed, but it obviously wasnât me,â she lectured, wiping her wet palms against her jeans. She heard the faint murmurs of Rick talking to Dale out by the RV behind her.
"Iâm the same as I ever was. So maybe youâre the one who changed, hmm?" she added, voice lower.
When she touched his arm, he turned to face her, the anger just below the surface. âI didnât make you anything but secure, and loved.â His finger was poised to point at her, but he withdrew it. She could make him madder quicker than anyone heâd ever known.
"It isnât adultery when you think your husband is dead, Lori. We havenât been intimate since. But this? This argument here, sure, thatâs adultery, every conversation weâve had since heâs been back has been. Because I donât think either of us is willing to let the other go. Iâll admit to it, but you wonât, and that is worse than adultery, Lori, way worse." He set his jaw and threw his arms up in frustration.Â
"All you are doing is lying, girl. Lying to Rick, lying to me, and most importantly lying to yourself. You can deny these feelings, you can pretend that what we had never existed, but it isnât the truth. The sooner you acknowledge that, you can get back to your pretty little life with your adoring husband who didnât think twice about working double shifts." Turning suddenly, he threw his fist into a nearby tree, sending bark flying.
"And the next time you blame me for that manâs poor choices, think about who chose to search for some lost little girl over your son. You remember who brought Carl what he needed to live. It wasnât his daddy Lori, it was me. It will always be me Lori. Rick doesnât have what it takes to be your man, but I do."
Shane's hand hit the tree and Lori's hand flew to her mouth, shock surging through her like a jolt. She wasn't used to physical outbursts-- it was rare enough that Rick so much as raised his voice to her, much less punched a wall.
"You took care of me and Carl." Lori's pushed her hair out of her eyes as she shook her head adamantly. The wind didn't help and she felt a ping of misplaced frustration. "I'm not taking that away from you. I would never take that away from you-- that was you risking yourself when you didn't have to."
She bit her tongue before she could bite back with who the real liar was. She wasn't the one who saw Rick "dead" in the hospital, he was, and look how that turned out. But that was an old argument. She had to get them back to now-- forget everything that had happened-- how scared she'd been and the ashy smell of napalm. Now was where they had to be.
"But you and I... we're not together. Not anymore. Maybe we were before but--" she swallowed, feeling weak and small all at once just for coming close to admitting it out loud. "Not anymore. I'll take being a liar, but only if you take it too, since I don't see you running to tell Rick anything either."
you promise me youâll always do whatâs right. itâs so easy to do the wrong thing in this world. so â so if it feels wrong donât do it, alright? if it feels easy donât do it, donât let this world spoil you.
Leave "I'll protect you!" in my askbox and I'll write out my muse's reaction.

I never knew there were so many different ways to say goodbye
Broken tag.
âIâm a better father than you, Iâm better for Lori than you. âcause Iâm a better man than you, Rick.â

He was whispering loudly now. âYou gonna blame me for Rick getting shot? How does this suddenly become my problem, unless you are just looking for someone to blame?â He stepped away from her, frustrated, his hands thrown in the air, but close and controlled.
"Youâre just looking for an excuse to deny those feelings you had for me. I know you Lori. You canât forget that. I know you, better than he ever did. Better than he ever will. You just keep giving him chances he can write in your book of disappointments.â Shane turned his back to her, glancing out over the field. âDammit Lori, I love you.â
Lori breathed heavy as the frustration settled in her chest.
"You were there that day, not me," she challenged. "You didn't pull the trigger but you were there with him on duty. You spent more time with him than I did. He was always working, and you never told him otherwise, did you?"
Somewhere in the back of her mind she knew she was being unreasonable. Rick choosing work over her or Carl was his own choice-- not Shane's, he had no responsibility to her or her son before the world went to hell, but she felt wound up like a top, ready to spin out of control.
Lori reached for his arm, suddenly angrier at the fact that he'd turn her back on her more than anything else. She wanted to see his face, feel that he was solid under her finger tips.
"Maybe all anyone ever does is disappoint each other?" she carefully ignored the part about him knowing her. It was truer than he knew, and she wouldn't give him the satisfaction. "You made me an adulterer-- we're adulterers now. How many pages could he write in his book of disappointments about that?"Â

"You never listen, do you?"
Send one of the following! (angst)
Lori tossed her hair back and answered with a glare. She was sick of Shane telling her to stay put while he and the others risked their lives-- or even worse, while she heard the calls of the doomed headed for Atlanta over the radio.
Sitting still wasn't what Rick would've done-- and maybe if Lori had gone to the hospital herself Rick would still be here. Part of her never gave up that regret.
"I told you we needed signs up on the highway to warn people about the city," she challenged. "Give me a vehicle and I'll be back in half an hour."
"Youâre hopeless. Get up."
Send one of the following! (angst)
Lori gave a hard sniff and shut her eyes tight against the sting of fresh tears. Her back ached, her feet were swollen. She didn't care if she was a month from due-- she was done being pregnant.
"No," she protested, glaring up at Carol. "You go on without me, I'll catch up, maybe."
Not Too Late [Shane & Lori]
You and him werenât okay. Hadnât been for a long time. We all knew it, but thatâs over.
âWe tried to keep it under control. Was it that obvious to you?â she asked, a grim smile creeping across her face as she reached up to try and wipe the tears away from her eyes. She hated how crying made her eyes red for hours afterwardâ especially lately.Â
She took a steady breath, trying to bury the embarrassment she felt over breaking down in front of Shane like this.Â
"I made is this far because of you, mostly." Her heart felt a little bit lighter as she smiled again and laid a hand on Shaneâs to squeeze it. "Iâm glad youâre here⌠Carl needs someone else who knew Rick, so he grows up knowing his dad, in a way."
Shane wouldnât ever admit it to anyone, and her especially, that he was jealous as the day was long of Rick. Because he knew that no matter what, heâd never measure up to him. Never. No matter how much he wanted to. No matter how much he tried. But he had her, and he was going to keep her.Â
He glanced away. âRick talked even less to me, Lori. We know that. He wasnât a man of words. Just a man who did what he had to do.â He gave a slight shrug. âNothinâ to be embarrassed âbout.â He let his head swivel to meet her eyes and give a nod. âCanât change things now. Just gotta hold onto the good. For Carl.â
Because she was right. No matter how jealous he was of the man alive or dead, Carl deserved to remember the man his father had been. Even if he would be a better father than Rick ever had been. He moved his other hand up to cup her cheek and give it a slight squeeze.Â
Rick talked even less to me, Lori. We know that. He wasnât a man of words.Â
Lori snorted and flashed a smile-- half embarrassed at the mess of tears and red, runny nose she had, and half genuine happiness at remembering just how much of a man of few words Rick really had been. She used to hate that about him, but now that he was gone everything seemed different. Regret made her remember his short comings with more fondness.
"You could say that again," she grinned. "Between you and me, we could almost piece together the few things he told us. Remember the police picnic? I never would've been able to plan it if I hadn't gotten half the information about it through you. We still didn't end up bringing a desert for anyone."
Shane squeezed her cheek and she bit her lip, bringing her hand up to rest on it. His touch was warm and comforting-- almost enough to make her forget the sticky feeling of tears drying on her cheeks.
"Carl's lucky to have you here. In more ways than one. He needs someone who can tell good stories about his dad, so he doesn't forget."
