Emma's body fell in slow motion, and Neal was lunging, catching air. Pan was gone before Neal could even touch him. But that hardly mattered, because he was already running to Emma's downed form. He pulled her against himself, curling around her. "I'm sorry." He had to say it, all of it, and he'd already lost precious seconds attacking Pan. "I never stopped loving you, and there's not a day that went by that I didn't regret leaving you." His voice caught in his throat. "I was gonna spend my life making it up to you…" Emma managed a whispered I love you in return, then she was g o n e.

Neal stayed there for what felt like ages, memories of their past flashing through his mind. Finally, he stood, holding her body bridal style. The painful irony that this was the only time he'd be able to hold her like that wasn't lost on him. He had one more thing to say, though.
