I finally picked up X-men 97 again and it’s weird because all the scenes are good, really good even. But the pacing makes it feel like I’m watching an edited down compilation rather than the full story.

Like there’s so much subtle impressive things in the writing of Magneto, and he really jumps between being funny and serious in a way that really works for the story. But I also struggle to feel the appropriate amount for both genosha and most romances because there’s so little time spent on buildup.

Reminder that prodigal is not a synonym for prodigy

When Lena calls Langdon the “prodigal son” she’s making a biblical reference to the parable of the prodigal son. Which follows a young man who leaves home and wastes his inheritance making bad decisions. But he eventually returns home where he is met with unconditional love from his father. At its core it’s a metaphor for sinners being able to enter heaven and find redemption.

Javadi standing up for herself and wanting to rightfully not follow what her parents want for her is not being a prodigal daughter, tho she might in the future if it goes badly.

It’s interesting to me that Hero has her mother’s surname but not Alogar and Shadia from what it seems. At first I assumed orcs just had patriarchal naming traditions, since Hal and Thjazi also have their father’s name. But Hero breaks the pattern. And it can’t be which name has more influence, since then Lloy would be the obvious choice.

I think some of the reason for why the Whittaker and Langdon fight became subject to so much debate is that it makes a lot of sense when looking at the characters individually. Whitaker is standing up for himself and creating boundaries, which has been a struggle all season. While Langdon is showing emotional growth in just accepting the critique and hopefully taking some of it to heart for himself, building on his previous conversation with Joy. So there is a lot to analyse.

But I don’t think it necessarily makes sense for their relationship at that point. We as the audience can choose to read into it and add context. But that's not really effectively communicated the way that many other conflicts are in the series

extremely delighted by the idea of mel having zero gaydar whatsoever and receiving an "lol gay" comment from trinity and genuinely losing sleep over it until she approaches robby with concerns that "a colleague may hold prejudiced opinions against a certain demographic of patients"

mel does go to langdon for advice on this btw and she opens the conversation with "i want to consider her a friend, but i'm rlly worried... have you ever had problems with santos?" and langdon is like WHAT DID SHE TELL YOU. and mel is like "she didn't tell me anything but i'm concerned that there might be.. homophobia...." and it confuses langdon so much he forgets to have a panic attack

So I know the joke for next season is how Santos and Langdon are gonna have to share Mel as a friend. But I just watched an interview with Ayesha and I think we’re really sleeping on what adding Ellis to this dynamic would look like

She’s apparently also a former athlete, matching Santos and Langdon. She’s worked with Santos for almost a year now and probably grown more respect for her. She’s one of few people who seems to have made an effort to be friendly with Mel, supporting her before the deposition. And this season she seems closer with Langdon than I thought, as they have quite a personal conversation regarding Robby.

I think there’s potential for some really fun dynamics here

Yes! I didn’t think too much about it until rewatch because all the pop culture references were distracting, but he seems really comfortable around her. When she asks how he’s doing he gives a pretty honest answer and doesn’t try to end the conversation. And while it’s presented as a joke it’s Ellis that keeps talking and brings up Robby, after which he gives an even more vulnerable answer. The advice he asks regarding Robby is quite personal and implies that she knows both of them relatively well, and understands their dynamic. And she’s the first person he admits that he’s in pain to, after 2 hours. Again willing to be vulnerable. It’s harder to tell how serious she is, but I don’t think she would have answered if she was genuinely annoyed.

He’s worked with Mohan a similar amount of time but they don’t have that type of conversations. And with (s1) Robby and Garcia, who he is close to, they notably seem to not talk to much about personal stuff. So they seem to fall more between regular colleagues and how he talks to Dana. It will be interesting to maybe get more clarity in season 3

#looking at the work dynamics as a whole #there’s something interesting about how garcia seems to try and be one of the guys #and how langdon seems to go to his female colleagues for personal things #most notably dana #while robby this season had multiple deep conversations with his male friends #as well as dana #obviously #she’s the emotional hub as my mother would say #while still avoiding langdon #who wants nothing but have a real conversation with him

What I really appreciate about Santos and Langdon is how much they genuinely don't like each other. So often when two charcters are in emotional conflict it gets awkard to pitt them completely against each other because the characters themselves actually do care about the other.

Even with a pair like Robby and Langdon I don’t think they would actually appreciate all the ways the fandom uses them as a vehicle to speak negatively about the other.

But Santos and Langdon could probably have fun reading all the hateposts.

But it really shows that it’s not necessarily about what she’s saying exactly, but the fact that she’s there for him

One thing that I love about Javadi’s rant where she judges everyone is how she’s not wrong but she’s also not correct. And it shows a (realistically) shallow understanding of her coworkers

Most of McKay and Santos issues predate med school. Langdon started taking painkillers because of an injury. Abbott is a veteran, amputee and widower. Even Robby who's issues are the most tied to work also has childhood trauma

Work, the emotional toll that comes with it and the culture that pressures them to overwork are definetly major reasons for their issues and make the preexisting issues worse. Especially for those who worked through the pandemic. But they're also human beings who have lived full lives and have complex motivations

#these are not things she would know about most of them #but that's also the point about it being judgy #she doesn't know why frank is an addict or why trinity is angry #she has a little more insight into mckay #but even there she doesn’t have any more details than us viewers #unless they really bonded off screen #the pitt #victoria javadi #trinity santos #frank langdon #michael robinavitch #jack abbot #cassie mckay #and again I love it #I think it’s realistically something someone would say about their coworkers after a 15 hour shift #because it’s messy and judgy

People have pointed out that Langdon has Zyn in his pocket and now I’m so sad they’re not Scandinavian because I would love another layer to his and Whitakers “little buddy” fight to include the fact that Whitaker is the type to stuff loose tobacco directly under his lip

I think it would be very healthy for Robby (eventually) to recognize that Langdon’s addiction is fundamentally about him being sick. And often when people who have found a coping mechanism don’t come to you it’s not necessarily about not trusting you, but because they know that if they ask for help they might get it. But that means they have to stop, and if they are not ready that makes it more terrifying

#do I have to add the disclaimer that I love robby feeling guilty over langdon #and do believe that the work environment of the er that he played a part in absolutely played a part in his addiction #and made him less inclined to come forward #but langdon is also a grown adult who’s responsible for his own fuck ups #and suffered for it #life is complicated that way #the pitt #dr robby #michael robinavitch #frank langdon
