they did! they had an incredible third-party tournament scene -- and remember, esports is a loss leader -- third-party tournaments are free marketing for your game being paid for by other people! in fact, due to licensing fees, they're free marketing for your game that other people are paying you to do! if you take control over your esports scene, you should be doing it so you can pump more money into it than a third part would be willing to -- but no, overwatch thought they could create a profitable walled garden of esports based on the idea of making a huge profit off their bone-headed doomed-to-fail 'global localised league' idea
