you know whoās gay? paul the real estate novelist who never had time for a wife and davey whoās still in the navy and probably will be for life
New headcannon: everyoneĀ in that song is gay except the Piano Man who has no idea heās playing at a gay bar and the staff and regulars have a betting pool on how long heāll take to finally figure it out. So far John is ahead.
āThe manager gives me a smile ācause he knows that itās me theyāve been coming to seeā also implies that the Piano Man is possibly an incredibly attractive but oblivious himbo, and if you listen to the rest of it imagining that, this all fits a little too well.
this makes too much sense. Also, the full quote is āNow John at the bar is a friend of mine. He gets me my drinks for free. And heās quick with a joke or to light up your smoke. But thereās someplace that heād rather beā Yes, your bed, he wants to be on your bed honey, thatās not a joke, he is flirting with you.
Lighting another manās cigarette is some old-school gay cruising.
Billy Joel actually addressed this interpretation!
You know, good on him for just rolling with it.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
This movie was so unapologetically New York it was wonderful.
Bad Bunny started playing and my theater started cheering. Thereās a halal butcher shop next to a bodega, the kid Peter saved is a wearing a Knicks jersey and thereās a random tourist bus thatās filled with people wearing tacky New York merchandise. My favorite detail is when Empire State turned on its lights to support Spiderman just like how it does in real life with actual events.
The city is alive, vibrant, and in tune with Spider-Man and we see it become its own character rather than just a background setting. Peter finally interacts with the city again as a figure and as a person as well. Thereās people who talk to him, who try to help in battles and these are all the moments that make the city a living and breathing home for Peter Parker and Spiderman together.
Tom Holland has such a better Queens accent too and the final moments of the movie are the end credits of everyday New Yorkers living their lives. Just parks, shots of our skyline and the people who make up the city. Idk but like Iām a New Yorker, and I just looked around in my theater and I saw so many people like me all wearing Spiderman merch who were all able to look on screen and see our home represented perfectly.
- i bet we were fun.
- like you wouldnāt believe.
Got obsessed with the dynamic of these losers
Spider-Man Brand New Day was such a fun movie, man
I would like to share the story of a very understandable but unfortunate mistake i made at work recently
So I'm weeding our ancient and terrible collection of children's books for the first time in possibly ever, and I'm making a decision about a book about migrant workers by Sandra Weiner, called Small Hands, Big Hands. And I'm not 100% sure and I go to just see if there's anything out there about this book's being notable in any way so I do an open web search for
"small hands big hands weiner"
And then I look at my results for a moment
and then at last I somberly add to the end of my search, "BOOK"
I have one like that:
In mathematics, you often consider the two-dimensional plane - you know, the idealised flat two-dimensional object that extends infinitely - which can be real or complex (doesn't matter what that means)
On this, you can perform a mathematical operation called a "blow-up" (resulting in a more complicated geometry)
I needed to look up a formula related to this, so I confidently typed into the search bar:
"Blow up real plane"
The results were not what I wanted and I am not sure if I'm on a terror watchlist now.
This reminds me of my corsetmaker days when i found myself searching for "extra thick boning."
I recall fondly one of Ursula Vernon's LJ posts where she was looking for references for a black rooster for one of her paintings (this one, iirc), and very nearly hit Enter on a search for "black cock"
I gotta tell you, I searched for "saucy walker leg" for my mom in the late 90s and got some *interesting* results

Troy doodling Harrisās name on his notebook with a bunch of hearts: god Iām such a selfish piece of shit
the thing that drives me up the wall about āanti/proshipā discourse is that it frames grooming as like, primarily an ideological practice in which the threat is that kids will āthink adult/minor relationships are morally okā. which sure maybe that happens idfk but the thing is that grooming is in practical almost entirely divorced from ideology and is so much more about individual exceptionalism⦠which I think is especially true for fandom-aged demographics! these arenāt kids who are just freshly learning the basics of right and wrong, most of them probably already generally know what pedophilia is and think itās bad, itās just that theyāre also particularly susceptible to individualized attention that makes them feel uniquely special and mature.
like. I donāt know. itās just incredibly frustrating to see people continually talking about CSA like it only happens because the perpetrators and victims believe pedophilia is morally permissible rather than because they think that their own personal circumstances exonerate them and make it uniquely acceptable and not harmful.
it is overwhelmingly my experience that kids and teens who met and then ādatedā adult partners struggle to think of themselves as victims of CSA because for whatever reason it just didnāt countānot when it was them. they were too precocious, they had too much agency, their abuser didnāt mean any harm, and what would have been a terrible criminal travesty if it had happened to anyone else was just a weird but understandable fluke situation that they brought upon themselves.
sort of relatedālots of kids do not actually see themselves as children. a child who sees themself as mature, different, and sensitive to condescension is not going to Identify As A Childā¢ļø and will hold themself to (what they think is) an adult standard. any effort to protect them that relies upon their seeing themself as A Childā¢ļø and accepting their status as a being of lesser agency is doomed to fail. and I think thatās true whether theyāre punished or rewarded for their apparent maturity because any kid who perceives being a child as a bad thing is⦠well. theyāre right. to be a child is to be a second-class citizen with very limited rights who is, functionally, private property. any child who becomes consciously aware of this will be traumatized by it and I donāt think that Good Parenting will ever fully prevent that. so of course theyāre not going to conceptualize themselves as victims of CSA because CSA can, by definition, only happen to real children.
