How much does your family earn. Are you married. Why not. When will you have children. All of it designed, consciously or not, to locate you in a hierarchy and determine how you should be treated accordingly.

You are under no obligation to hand people accurate information that they will use against you. This is not about being a dishonest person in any meaningful sense. Certain questions are not asked in good faith and therefore do not deserve good faith answers. Someone trying to establish whether you are desperate, whether you have options, whether you can be taken advantage of, whether you will tolerate poor treatment because you have no choice… I think that person has forfeited their right to the truth.

Know what impression serves you in any given situation and construct your answers around that. If appearing from a comfortable background protects you, present that. If appearing more self-made and independent positions you better, present that instead. Read the room, understand what the person across from you is actually trying to find out, and give them the version that keeps you in the strongest possible position. Stay consistent, stay calm, and never volunteer information that hands someone leverage over you that they did not earn and will not use kindly.
