The radioactive fallout from the bombs caused a drastic increase in the number of humans born with genetic mutations. Many times, these mutations are things like overgrown hearts or tumorous growths on the spine or brain, resulting in death not long after being born. However, this is not always the case and many mutated humans are able to survive and even thrive with various atypical alterations to their forms. Some mutations are as innocuous as simple heterochromia or a sixth finger. Others are far more extreme; multiple heads, eyes or limbs, spiny protrusions, patches of scale-like skin, prehensile tails, etc. In regards to how post-nuclear society views these individuals, it varies depending on location. In the Dusts, people are typically too busy trying to survive on a day to day basis to harbor prejudices. West of the Rockies, in Phoenecia, mutants are forced to register as such by the government and are carefully monitored and studied by scientists, but are otherwise treated the same as non-mutated humans. There are also, of course, groups which fear and hate them, and even those who hold a strange reverence for them, such as followers of the New Light, who consider them “touched by Gamma’s light.”

Originating as a small yet devout cult in the Dusts around what was once Arkansas, the First Church of the New Light quickly expanded to become perhaps the most widespread religion in Oosa, though the few tribal cultures that remain in the area still mostly practice a shamanistic spiritualism. Recently, however, they have suffered a schism; the separatist movement, a group of New Light followers with a radically differing interpretation of the scripture have grown in influence and support, threatening the cohesion of the faith as a whole. Though a bit narrow minded, New Light followers generally work toward making the wastes a more tolerable place, and strive to live without greed or hatred, as they believe these aspects of humanity are what caused society to become corrupted, and ultimately, what brought God’s Great Fire upon the earth, leaving its remaining inhabitants to walk the scorched wastes in repentance. They believe, however, that by living virtuously and helping others, that a paradise will await them after death, plentiful with untainted fruits and clean water.
