Yesterday (domingo) compañera de piso Stephanie y yo took the metro to Parque ArvĂ, which is a protected area above MedellĂn.  To get there you go to the end of the Metro and Metro Cable proper at Santa Domingo (already amazing views) and then spend a small surcharge to continue on to Parque ArvĂ.  We lucked into finding the Festival GastronĂłmico at the top, and then hacimos senderismo a bit through the woods.  After our hike, we ate empanadas, torta de chocolo, tarta de naranja y zanahoria, and fresas/moros/tomates de árbol con salsa de chocolate.  ¡QuĂ© rico!

CicolovĂa today, for miles. Â Not the crazy big event it is now in LA, but maybe because they get it every week? Â Whose streets? Â Our streets.
So many fruits here we don’t see much in the USA.  ¡Guanabana, por ejemplo!Â
By getting the scheduled time wrong, I ended up doing not one but two after school activities.  The school has a cafĂ© connected with it, and they’re pretty serious about their coffee (this is Colombia after all).  The first activity was a straight coffee tasting -- I learned all about coffee types worldwide, production, and a zillion other facts I’ll soon forget.  And we proceeded to smell, slurp, and grade various coffees.  The second activity was about coffee cocktails.  In the b&w picture you might be able to see the effect the caffeine was having on me.  I hope I can sleep tonight. Â
Cars are the enemies of cities.  (The title of a documentary I’ll make one day.)  Was reminded today of the smell of Nairobi, Kampala, Quito, Mexico City, etc. etc.  All of those cities where there are too many cars and the distinctive smell of engines without catalytic converters.  “Bien communicado” is a rare quality in cities but a damn important one.  I’m enjoying MedellĂn, but like too many cities in the world, it’s designed more for cars than for people.  Madrid is more pedestrian friendly, for sure. Â
Another new tense today!  Condicional.  I think that’s a total of 4 new tenses this week alone and Monday was even a holiday.  Tomorrow there’s a test to see if I can advance to B1.  I barely started A2 when I left Madrid, so this is a reach.  I think I can do it, pero tengo que practicar mucho despuĂ©s para estar más hábil con la nueva informaciĂłn! Â
I talked to the school today about “homestay” options.  One of them sounds interesting -- it’s sort of a mescla of a traditional homestay (living with a Colombian family) and a student housing situation.  There are two other students there and the couple leaves the flat at night, but they provide desayuno y la cena tambiĂ©n, so it might be a good combo of forced Spanish and some social interaction.  Hoping to minimizing the former actually, and focus on doing some writing, as miserable as that is for me.  I’ll sleep on it and book mañana -- either that option or another Airbnb. Â

Colombian fruit tasting after class today. Â La fruta: Â guayaba, granadilla, tomates de arbĂłl, papaya, lulo, pitahaya, papaya, uchuva, carambolo...
And another tense today -- all in preparation for condicional next week:  futuro simple.  ¡Ay, mami!
Martes.  Las vistas while waiting for the elevator and then school.  Mi profesora se llama Astrid.  Just 3 students including me in the class.  I was placed in a level where I was supposed to (maybe?) already know pretérito imperfecto y pretérito pluscuamperfecto.  But I wasn’t alone, so we “reviewed” them in the morning.  Fortunately they don’t seem too hard; just lots of practice required ahead to figure out how to properly use them and to get confident in mixing them...
Afterwards an official “welcome” almuerzo. Â
