the earth had not seen rain in weeks.
the typical summer heat, thick with humidity, was only worsened by the unrelenting sun. its scorching rays and the absence of wind made the outdoors unbearable, forcing people into stores and homes for even a moment of air conditioning.
after a particularly restless night, i woke long before sunrise. the birds outside my window coaxed me onto the balcony, and so i dragged myself from bed to wake with the world.
the moment i opened the door, it hit me: thick, damp air clinging to my skin. even without a breeze to break the humidity apart, the temperature felt perfect—neither cool nor warm, suspended in a strange summer limbo.
when i looked up, the sky was deep purple. But i quickly realized it wasn’t the sky at all. heavy clouds stretched overhead, swollen and dark, as though barely able to hold themselves together. a flicker of white flashed from within them.
the rain had finally come.
the lightning grew more frequent, thunder rumbling louder with every passing second. instead of a single jagged strike, the clouds seemed to pulse with light entirely, illuminating the whole sky at once like some secret message meant only for me.
i could only watch in awe.
then, finally, the clouds gave way. sheets of rain crashed onto the ground below, soaking the concrete and flooding the grass within minutes. safe beneath the shelter of the balcony, i watched as cool mist brushed against my legs. the wind had decided to arrive after all.
i sat there as the rain fell harder and the lightning burned brighter. i admired nature’s violence while my hair curled in the heavy air around me. i stared at the white-hot flashes splitting through the sky as thunder roared somewhere beyond sight, indicating lightning had struck.
sometimes, i wish i could be struck too.
