i think one of the worst things the left wing internet ever did was push the idea that oppression is basically a virtue, and being oppressed is a sign of your morality. it has made it like…impossible for some of you to hold the idea that most people are privileged in some ways and oppressed in others. AND a lot of you seem to have it in your mind that terrible people cannot be oppressed, and that oppressed people cannot do terrible things, which is a dangerous rhetoric to hold imo.

tbh i don’t think any aesthetic or fandom is inherently leftist. people will say “you can’t be goth/punk/emo/alt/whatever if you’re not a leftist!” and “how do conservative star trek fans exist?” and like. it’s simple. they’re literally just aesthetics and fandoms. there is nothing inherently leftist about dressing a certain way, or listening to certain music, or watching certain tv shows.

i think a lot of people want to believe that performing a certain aesthetic or being in a certain fandom makes you a better leftist, because they’re at least semi-aware that they aren’t doing enough. but instead of going out and trying to improve anything, they just reframe something they’re already doing as radical and leftist.

Like, Star Trek has historically included 100% intentional political content-- not very far leftist political content, but metaphors, allegories, morals, and casting choices that were meant to be progressive for their time. Participating in Star Trek fandom does not make you progressive or center-left, just like participating in Tolkien fandom does not make you a conservative Catholic. And if conservative dudes who love space lasers and hate "wokeness" were just going, "Jim Kirk is a badass. I don't care about all that diversity bullshit," they would be pretty much equal-and-opposite to progressive-leaning Tolkien fans. But no, every time a new Trek comes out, there's somebody going, "Keep politics out of Star Trek! Make Trek apolitical again, like it was when I was watching TOS/TNG/DS9!" They didn't just notice the message and disagree-- they apparently didn't pick up on it at all, even though Star Trek is not subtle. There are Republicans who will say that their favorite band is Rage Against The Machine, and instead of adding "I don't agree with their politics, but the music slaps," they'll claim that the band's early lyrics had no obvious political content, and not even seem to realize what an own goal it is to admit they missed that.

Star Trek has histoircally included a lot of stuff that would be considered very progressive for its day, but would be mainstream and middle-of-the-road today.

I think also that part of the issue with people arguing everything in Trek was left-wing is that... Not everything in trek was left-wing. Hell, if you described the major plot arcs in DS9 outside of Trek context A lot of people would start having 'issues' with it. Like, just as a meta-example...

The actual Son Of God comes to Not-Israel to help them after being oppressed by the bigoted fascists, and then has to work to keep the traumatized genocide survivors from constant civil war. The major foes are Fascists who've held control over the planet and consider it more theirs than the natives, and later Collectivist fascists who see people as interchangeable and spend all their time infiltrating groups to suborn them.

The Greedy Capitalists are trusted allies and comic relief, often critical help. The Plucky Underdogs have a chip on their shoulder. The local Fascist(2) Cop is a popular support, the Plucky Doctor is an arrogant Poonhound, the local representative of Fascists(1) is a conniving spy. The Son of God gets his hands dirty to win the war.

And when everything is said and done the Son of God beats up the Antichrist and ascends to Heaven, and all is right with the world!

Now, in 2026, do you think you'd be able to get away with a story like that?

I think that people like sparkling lake monster kinda expect media to educate the masses... But the attitude is kinda "people should uncritically assimilate into the message exposed by the media they consume"

The thing is, just because it's not about politics you don't agree with, it doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, if they're good to begin with.

The simplest example would be Don't look up, a very good movie with an overt "progressive" message. Regardless I mostly relate to the feeling of being surrounded by idiots... Or rather, being surrounded by people more concerned with the politics of stuff, rather than the material reality, both ways.

This is what happens when you start treating politics like fandom and fandom like religion, is what I'm saying
