Brook had been up since five that morning. She was exhausted in every sense of the word, and yet was pumped with so much adrenaline that sleep was the last thing on her mind.Â
The day had been a whirlwind: theyâd taken a jet to Washington, D.C. where theyâd been ushered straight into hair and make-up, and then received at the White House by the motherfuckinâ President of the United States and awarded the Presidential Medals in a formal ceremony. Then theyâd done a series of photoshoots, press conferences, and interviews back to back (Brook had lost count after five), and then an appearance on Jimmy Fallon, whoâd apparently fought tooth and nail with the other late night hosts for an exclusive.Â
Now she stood staring at herself in a mirror, her fingers gently caressing the shiny gold medal that hung from her neck, chilly against her skin. It was phenomenal. Better than any of her diamond necklaces. And it was all hers.Â
She turned to the person she was with, a delirious giggle escaping her lips. âI am never taking this off.â
Even with his long history of being in the limelight, nothing compared to this day. And as much as this was everything he wished for, he couldnât properly enjoy the moment.
There was a nagging thought in his mind, a small grain of doubt over how deserving he was in receiving the medal. He did kill someone for this âprizeâ. (Not to say that his record was the cleanest, but he felt even worse that their success was attributed to an accident â an accident he caused.)
Once they returned to the green room, Jet took off the medal, as if it was scorching and burning his skin. He avoided looking at the incriminating artefact, choosing to focus on Brook instead. âEven if it doesnât go with your outfit?â he teased, leaning on one of the sofa. âYou seem happy.â
Sheâs called him a simp beforeâalways teasing, always jokingâeven if it was extremely true. And she chose to ignore the fact that she simps just as hard for him. Love was a weird concept, but sheâs starting to accept that it had a very prominent place in her life. It was dangerous in their line of work, but they were two of the toughest badasses that sheâs ever met. If anyone could make it work, it would be them.Â
Lily gives out a ticklish squeal, jumping up at the touch and scrunching her nose. âIâm not kinkshaming, I swear. I think itâs kind of hot that strong women turn you on,â she teases lightly.Â
She gives a little sigh, leaning into his touch. Homelander was unstable, dangerous, and has otherwise proven (she hopes) to the world that heâs a psychopath. Outing Maeve? Who the fuck did he think he was? That was a stupid questionâbut it just cemented how much of a piece of shit he was. A surge of guilt spreads in her chest, sheâd brought this plague into her own life and by proxy any person she gave her heart to after. If anything happened to Jet because of herâŚ
She wouldnât know what to do.
Her lips curl up in a fond smile, brows arching in consideration until he breaks away from her. Her smile dims a little but still remains on her features. He wasnât fluent in speaking feelingsâbut she knew he cared. She moves around him and unhooks her window, climbing out onto the staircase. âHey, feisty is a good thing. You donât lock a good thing up in an apartment,â she teases, letting him off the hook. âNot to mention Iâd find my way out.â
-
Heâd deny it hell and back whenever she joked about him âsimpingâ over her. So what if he was crazy about her? What if he was determined to make the relationship work because he knew sheâd be worth it? His previous relationships didnât end well; not that both parties left on bad terms, but it was disheartening (not to mention tiring) that the time and effort he had invested in the relationship went to nothing. He was prepared to give up the idea of having relationships and settling down and those things â until that fateful kiss on the rooftop.
And from the way Lily acted around him, she sure reciprocated the feelings.
Watching her reaction, Jet smirked mischievously. âSomebodyâs ticklish it seems,â he said. Oh, he had every intention of exploiting this knowledge someday in the future. âWhy wouldnât strong women turn people on? I swear people are weird.â
It was little moments like these that made him appreciate her so much. He ought to take a step back and relish in it. That wouldnât be so bad, right? Slowing down for once. It seemed like his life had always operated in two modes â autopilot (with someone steering his life towards one particular direction) and acceleration (with him always playing catch up with... fuck, he didnât even know what or who he had to catch up to). It wouldnât be so bad to take over the steering wheel and taking control.
âI wonât be surprised if you got out,â he chuckled as he followed her outside. He had to crouch down as to not bump his head. âAlright, so where to, maâam?â he asked. âWhich part of New York is the most invested with muggers and bad guys?â
Lexi nods before taking a sip of her tea. When Jet asked her about being threatened she looks around before answering and leaning in again. For all she knew, Vought had ears and eyes everywhere. âYou know that thing he does where itâs an unspoken threat, but itâs also very clearly a threat? It was that. It was pretty clear that if I discussed the project with anyone else that it wouldnât be pretty.â She sighs. âWhy?âÂ
-
If there was a thing he respected about Homelander is that he knew how to cover his bases. His methods are questionable and unethical (not like Jet hadnât dabbled in his own fair share of plotting and scheming), but thereâs a certain meticulousness to his work. âI know,â Jet said. âAnd Iâm not going to push you to tell me. Wouldnât want him to do whatever it is he threatened you with.â He sipped his coffee. âJust wanted to know. I like keeping up with what everyoneâs doing. Keeps my horizons... broadened. If thatâs even the correct word to use.â
âYeah. Happy doinâ my own thing wiâ my mates. The comedown anâ hangover can be a shit but Iâve got used to it now.â Beinâ asked if he was happy didnât get asked to him anâ he didnât really mind it. Somethinâ was always goinâ on. âSaw your lot on thâ news witâ your medals. Congrats on thaâ.â The splotlight on it had dimmed it a bit since Maeve was outed. âTheyâll be announcinâ a movie for you soon.â
-
He simply nodded at the otherâs answer. He wished that the otherâs life could turn around, because â no matter how much Blarney Cock was painting it as happy â his life seemed hollow when the drugs and the booze were removed. âThanks, appreciate it, man,â Jet smiled. âNo movies, hopefully. I donât feel like acting right now.â But, of course, the triumphant moment had to be undercut by Homelander. âIâm not the only one makinâ headlines, though. That dick Homelander had to out Maeveâs secrets.â

âI cleared out a terrorist cell on my own and it took me about 5 minutes. That was even when I was taking my time.â Taking his time so he could really enjoy the whole thing and savour it but nobody needed to know that. âYou required a whole team. Tell you what, why donât we have a little challenge. You take down one cell on your own and Iâll do it. Weâll do it at the same time and see which one of us gets the job done faster and better.â Vought wouldnât allow it but he didnât care. âNo damage control. Maeve was scared to come out so I helped her. Now she, Elena and that ginger supe son of hers can play happy family. I never said she owed me anything.â
-
âYou say that like working in a team is a bad thing,â Jet retorted, attempting to change the subject. His blood was boiling, but he knew he had to remain calm. Itâs not like Jet wouldnât be able to do that. With his new powers, Jet could do it, right? The question now lies on whether Jet could get those powers out of control. What if it wonât be long before he accidentally âexplodesâ again. âAnd what? Are you going to livestream the challenge for the whole world to watch?â He shook his head. âCan they really?â Jet was all too familiar with the way Vought commercialised every aspect of peopleâs lives. âYou know Vought is going to milk the shit out of this, right? And you said you have no ulterior motives.â
He nodded a little at the otherâs realisation, but didnât comment. Hearing what Jet was saying, Richard knew he was right to move here. Yet, he was surprised to hear these things from a Vought employee, it wasnât the corporate talk he was used to hearing when Vought became a topic. âItâs alright.â He echoed the chuckle. âBen is young and reckless, he doesnât think of the consequences of his actions for the most part, and thinks ahead even less. Thatâs why Iâm concerned about him wanting to be in the Seven.â It was almost an obsession, Richard believed.Â
-
It wasnât much of a surprise that a young supe is aiming for The Seven. Itâs every single one of their dreams â hell, even Jet went through a phase like that. Jet didnât doubt Shockwaveâs capability (as a speedster, Vought could get actual statistical information to kick out A-Train) and he had no problem supporting the younger supe, but hearing his fatherâs side of the story was completely different. Here, he understood the worries and the effects greed could bring. âDo you think he could make it?â
closed starter for @goesboomâ
location: The Church of the Collective
It was a struggle to go from his apartment in Seven Tower to a house that the church paid for on their own complex. It was like its own unofficial community where the church leaders allowed and allotted their dedicated followers a place to stay. No that the Deep was getting married, he was being assigned one and a wife. The Deep was halfway through eating when someone excitedly announced that Boom Boom was on the property. âIf youâre here for an invite donât worry, Iâve got you covered and itâs already in the mail.â Well, he had brought up the issue of a guest list with Carol before the wife had been decided and there was some push back on other supes being there. Apparently she didnât want too many supes there to overshadow the Deep and his new bride.
There was something strange about stepping into the churchâs territory. Jet couldnât put it into words, but any interactions with the Collective send shivers down his spine. Jet always wondered how people get roped so easily into what is clearly a scam, but with The Deep, itâs not even a question of how â maybe more of a when.
The Deepâs wedding is surely going to be interesting. To be honest, Jet didnât want to come, but the fact his secret girlfriend was the maid of honour (why?), he kind of had to come. Hopefully, thereâs some chaos. (Or maybe, he could provide some of that.) âGotta say, I never pinned you as a marriage kind of guy,â Jet commented. âYou guys are being coy about the bride, though. You protectinâ her identity or something?â
Brook wasnât stupid. She knew he wasnât really thankful; she could hear the sarcasm practically dripping from his tone. Sometimes she wondered why she even tried making Paybackâs home an enjoyable place for everyone. The building was so dull and dreary and boring, even more so before sheâd joined the team. She just wanted it to be somewhere they could all come together and enjoy each otherâs company, yet no one seemed to appreciate her efforts.
âExactly. You make money so you can have fun. Why the fuck else would anyone make money? And I donât see you having any fun outside work either, so you might as well get some here,â she scoffed. Jet was starting to get on her nerves with his pessimism. Was there a day the guy didnât just relax? âYou know, you need to fucking calm your shit, youâre starting to remind me of Soldier Boy.â
-
The concept of making money to have fun was foreign to Jet. While it wasnât something he grew averse to after experiencing consequences, he had observed other supes for too long to realise that reputation is a feeble thing. Having fun would lead to recklessness and Jet was in no mood to jeopardise his current lifestyle. He decided not to indulge her with an answer, because, regardless of what he said, she was going to rebut him â which would only lead to an argument where both of the stubborn parties wonât yield.
âDonât you dare compare me to that fuckinâ robot,â Jet snarled. âI am nothing like him.â He wished he could calm down, but the rage within him was proving too hard to control. He paced around, as if it was a cry for help for someone to help him process his conflicting emotions. âJust tell them to go home. Iâm in no mood to deal with them,â he said. âPlease.â
âFair enough. Iâm sure Iâll get to put my hands on you eventually, one way or another,â Brook answered, not missing a beat. Her chocolate eyes were still studying him intently, trying to figure out where he stood. In the new dynamic she had within this new team, was he going to be an ally or would he just get in her way?
At his question, Brook reached down to grab her Louis Vuitton travel bag from the floor, hauling the strap over her shoulder. âNo, actually. Lead the way. Iâm dying to see my room.â
-
He tilted his head in amusement. The way she worded it made it seem like it was a challenge to her â which only made him more alarmed. Unknowingly, he stepped back, shooting her a smile to soften the (arguably rude) act. He gestured towards the elevator before walking towards it.
âDonât get your hopes up,â he chuckled. âItâs not as big as youâd imagine.â That was, in fact, his first reaction. He entered the elevator and pressed the floor where Brookâs quarter is located. He nodded towards her bag. âIâm surprised you only have one bag for your move.â

Lily smiles against his lips, cupping his face lightly in her hands. She knows if she has it bad, then heâs riding along in the same boat. Their connection meant something to her, something good and pureâsomething that worries and excites her. She loves having someone to trust like this, someone to be vulnerable and calm with. Even if they loved teasing the hell out of each otherâshe knew that if someone said something bad about the other, all hell would break loose.
At least on her end. Sheâd kick someoneâs ass for saying something rude about Jet.
She smooths a thumb against his cheek and arches a brow. âYouâve got the weirdest fetish, I swear,â she jokes, shaking her head. She turns and digs through her closet, pulling out an oversized hoodie and tucking it over her head. Sheâs well aware that she looks like Baby Yoda in the hoodieâbut sheâs accepted it. Sheâs teeny.Â
Her fear isnât just nosy fansâalthough, they would get annoying, she thinks. Her fear is that someone (like that giant human adaption of a dildo named Homelander) would hurt Jet to get to her. She knows he said he doesnât care, but with him, she has to play it very carefully. No risks. Still, she knows itâs an impossible feat to hide it for the rest of their lives.Â
Sooner or later Vought would want to capitalize on another Supe couple. And Lily didnât want the media and the press to do to them what they did to Maeve and Homelander. It makes her sick.
Sighing softly, she stuffs her hands through the sleeves of the hoodie, smiling at his dedication. âI want to go out with you. I donât want people to feel entitled to every little detail in our relationshipâŚbut IâŚâ She pauses and peeps up at him from beneath the hood. âMy feelings are getting stronger and I know that someday, I wonât want to hide us. I want you to be safe though.â
-
It was odd how happy she makes him and she didnât even have to do much. She could be sending something as simple as a smile his way and that would melt him instantly. He finally realised what those people mean when they say that love makes you weak. Not that he feels weak, he felt more alive than heâs ever been. But he quickly came to the conclusion that if anything were to happen to Lily, that would break him.
âDonât shame me,â he snorted. âItâs not my fault I like strong women.â He poked her sides and proceeded to watch her slip on the hoodie. He bit back a grin over how cute she looked and the excitement over their adventure.
But there were other things to worry about.
He listened to her intently, taking her face in his hands once more, slipping his fingers into her hair. He craned his neck down to meet her gaze, hoping that would show his understanding over the situation. The previous person she... entangled with is the shittiest person to ever lived, as proven by how he recently outed his teammateâs secrets. And Jetâs newly acquired medal does not guarantee his safety forever â or hers for that matter â but for now, it provided a shield of sorts. âRecent presidential medal awardee found deadâ does not make for a good headline.
Yet, it warmed his heart that she worried for him. âMy feelings for you...â he hesitated, a bit shy in speaking the words into existence. âTheyâre also strong.â He said it in a rushed manner, hoping she wouldnât catch how he was falling deeper. Still, he got carried away. âSo trust me when I say I wonât do anything stupid that would worry you â unless it is to keep you safe because god knows I...â He trailed off and stopped himself, intimidated by the sudden shift of mood. He let go of her to move to the nearest window, trying to find an opening for them (or so he told himself, he just needed a moment to breathe). â...might have to lock you up in an apartment, because â letâs be honest â you can be a bit too feisty.â
In which Jet called his mother to ask her about Compound V.
Despite consuming a little too much alcohol during Lilyâs launch party, Jet found himself with another glass of whiskey when he arrived home. His phone remained untouched on the other side of the kitchen island. He eyed it, internally debating if he should call his mother now or after he gets more alcohol in his system.
Nope, better to get this over and done with.
5:00 am, he noted. Based on her stories, by this time, she should be out, walking through the garden. Then, sheâd prepare her breakfast. Always butter on toast and scrambled eggs (and if she was feeling adventurous, sheâd only use the egg whites). Since sheâs alone, sheâd eat it on the kitchen island. No point of using the dining table, she said.
Her routine reminded Jet of his own, only his version involved him pacing around his apartment instead of a garden and drinking protein shake rather than eating a full breakfast. Apart from that, itâs the same; they move like clock work and, most importantly, all alone.
As he set down the glass on the marble island, the glass clinked â a sound that was carried by an echo throughout his apartment, which only reminded how empty the place was.
He dialled the number and counted the ringing tone.
One, two â If it hit ten, heâd hang up.
Five, six â Hanging up doesnât sound too bad...
Eight... Nine... â
âJethro?â
Fuck. âYou sound surprised.â
âI am,â she said, her voice sombre. âYouâre my son and, call it pride or arrogance, our family is not one to reach out to people.â
âYou reached out to me.â
âOnly because your dad convinced me before he died. Who got to you?â
âDoesnât matter.â
âDonât deflect.â
âYouâre deflecting.â
âI am.â He could hear her grin over the phone. âYou must be calling for an explanation about Compound V.â
âSo explain.â
"Well, Iâm not going to excuse myself by saying things like âI did it so you would have a better lifeâ. Truth is, I did it because Iâm selfish.â
âDid you regret it?â
âDo you want an answer to that? Wouldnât it be better to have someone to blame for all the things that happened in your life?â
âDid you regret it?â he pressed.
âNot a day goes by without regret. But I busied myself with work, hobbies, luxuries. They distract me.â
âYou were certainly distracted for three decades.â
âClearly it worked wonders on me. Now my son hates me.â She chuckled. âBut truly, Iâm sorry, Jethro.â
âI know.â
âYou can hate me all you want.â
âI know.â
âI should be a better mother.â
Jet said nothing, he kept his mouth shut, effectively creating a pregnant pause.
His mother was the one to broke the silence, âIâm going grocery shopping for thanksgiving this evening. I donât know how many people to shop for, so I thought Iâd ask. Are you coming?â
âIâll think about it.â
âThink about bringing the person who convinced you to call me. Iâd like to thank them for knocking some sense into you.â
At Jetâs question, Richard took a long sip from drink, thinking of how he should answer. Normally, he just said his son was a social media influencer, since heâd been asked not to get involved in anything supe or Vought-related, but Richard didnât want to lie to Jet. He motioned his head a little towards Vought Tower. âHe doesnât like me talking about it, but⌠He works for Vought. Goes fast, wears orange. â
-
The realisation hit him. âOh, shit.â He lowered his voice. âYour son is Shockwave?â Now that he think about it, he could see some family resemblance. âNo wonder you moved here.â Jet tapped his foot, wondering if he should talk about their meeting. âHeâs a good kid, honestly. I met him once. Good but really ambitious.â A beat. âYou gotta a close eye on him, make sure he doesnât burn himself âcause he got too to the sun. The whole world is alluring but it can destructive.â He paused then chuckled. âSorry, I probably didnât help did I?â

âI guess so. We ainât ever had anyone come anâ tell us to do anythinâ or watchinâ over us. We got the house and Vought send us out on assignments or for the movies but thaâ is it. Nothinâ like you lot or the other groups.â Anâ it was just how they all liked it. âThaâ ainât how Iâd want it but its how Voughtâll do it.â He wanted to joke about it but there was a bit of seriousness in it. âFor anyone in your group you would get a whole movie anâ theyâd charge triple for the tickets.â
-
Jet didnât know whether he should feel sorry or not. On one hand, it was horrible for them to be left alone and essentially used by the company just when they were needed, then discarded. On the other hand, being suffocated by handlers and their incessant nagging isnât fun either. Regardless, he realised that he probably had it better than the kids in Teenage Kix. Thatâs probably why they drowned and numbed themselves using all the drugs and alcohol and partying. âYou happy, though?â he asked.
âDo I?â he asked rhetorically but full of anger and spite. Something about Jet just got under his skin and he hated the other supe. âYou donât give me any impression, youâre not relevant enough for that.â Still, he was annoyed at Payback. âWhy do you even care? You donât know Maeve, you have no interest in her or her girlfriend or her secret bastard. It doesnât concern you.â So many people wanting to get involved. âI didnât want a headline. I helped her and her girlfriend out so now they donât have to hide. They should be thanking me. Now they can have whatever life they want and not hide in shame.â It was completely done as a power move over Maeve. âGreat. Go kill it somewhere else.â
-
âSure,â Jet curtly said. âEven if Payback was the one who got to the terrorist before you...â He trailed off, pretending to look around the meeting room. Itâs fancy, thatâs for sure. âThatâs what you say, but Iâve been in the business long enough to know that people donât do things just because they care. Turn the attention away from your failure towards something else, right? Classic damage control.â And maybe, Jet does care. It wasnât Homelanderâs secret to share and who was he to decide how the information goes out. âMaeve donât owe you shit.â He clicked his tongue. âMaybe. I should go downstairs and meet the fans.â
