what do we do if a character is never really given a last name ?
You are welcome to make one up! For my characters Elinor and Harriet, I use the last name Frell for "Ella of Frell" because it's a location in the book and I made up the surname Pavo for Hera because it means peacock. Typically they'd have some connection to your character inspiration!

It's election year in Godscobh! This summer is full of fun events and celebrations that bring in tourism to our small town, but it's also time for citizens to perform their civic duty! The mayor's two year term is coming to an end and anyone in Godscobh is welcome to begin a campaign. Competition will be tough though, considering how Zika has been a popular choice for many years, the Olympios family has the legacy vote down, and the council has sway to make the public believe anything.
What?: Current Mayor Zika will be running again for re-election, obviously, but many others in Godscobh might want to put their hat in the ring. Other positions on the ballot include the school board, district attorney, city clerk, and city treasurer. Other summer events fall under the umbrella of the election, as any town meeting can be used as an advertising opportunity.
When?: In world, there will be multiple small events taking place June-Aug. Firstly, Godscobh's Pride Fest will be held the last weekend of this month, then lead into Independence Day in early July. Lastly, your characters will be voting at the end of August and an announcement will be made. Plotting and writing threads to do with the events described below and the election can begin anytime after this is posted!
Who?: All Godscobh HQ members should be aware of the event as it is big news. Also, let Quinn know if your character wants to run for a position ( even if it's not one listed, it can be added )!

June 25th-28th: Pride Fest at Sappho's
July 3rd-5th: Independence Day at Town Hall
Voting period: Opens August 1st and ends 14th
Think of the entire event as extending through the whole summer and all leading up to the election itself. The two prior mentioned weekends are not long enough to devote an entire event to, but they make great locations to start threads at over the summer ( and may be influenced by the discussion of politics and tension in the town ). Additionally, it can be assumed that this is the busiest time for tourism in Godscobh, the beaches are filled, and businesses are booming!
The intention is to have smaller events that all culminate into the voting period that is considered vital to the town. Although not listed as events, other summer activities in town that may spark inspiration include:
Drive-in movies on the beach
Concerts held in the open-air amphitheater within Godscobh's forest
Weddings held at the Olympian Gardens
Sailing races beginning at the docks
Community gardening near the Farmer's Market
Career counseling services offer at Cove High
Where can threads take place and what should they entail?
Any of the above mentioned locations around town can be used, and those ideas can form the basis of any early threads set up in June/July! That said, this is all in weekly news, campaign events are held in public places, and anyone from friends, family, or your characters themselves could be in the running! Large issues of discussion include:
Crime: Nauticus has reopened since the police investigation couldn't pin anything concrete to Mr. James Hook. Pixie dust is still easy to find on any given weekend and with the new flow of tourists incoming, that means even more business for the drug trade.
Construction: More businesses have expanded to meet the demand of the summer season, but this causes lots of disturbance among family homes and displaces the homeless population.
Youth: The foster system in Godscobh has been overrun for quite some time, and every candidate claims to have the exact strategy to fix it.
Education/Jobs: Career studies courses are beginning at Cove High School, but it's still unclear if those efforts bear fruit.
Housing: Should the land devoted to building short-lived businesses have been used to expand accessible housing?
Who exactly is running?
Unless your character would like to run for a position, it can be assumed that a variety of NPCs are running in the roles that are open. Current Mayor Zika is staunchly dedicated to maintaining his position. A few other names in the mix for mayor:
Isabelle Majorelle, returning from an overseas investment opportunity with Majorelle Banking and eager to present a family-friendly persona to the public.
William Calloway, owner of a vast array of property along the Godscobh cost and many residential neighborhoods. He'd disappeared from public life since the death of his wife many years ago, but is recently making more campaign appearances.
George Darling, well known for his willingness to invest in businesses around town and support new projects, so long as he can make his money back tenfold.
Zander Olympios, not formally running but a popular write-in candiate because of his history in the position.
Does my character have to care about this?
Nope! The people in Godscobh can have varying levels of involvement, depending on how much they care about the city government. If you feel your character won't even vote and ignores the campaigns, no need to discuss the election at all! This is why I've planned plenty of other summer activities, so we can have a good variety of opinion around town.
