Day three: 8 ways to win my heart.

1. Tell me the truth, even when you know it’s something I don’t want to hear.

2. When I’m having a bad day don’t tell me it’ll get better. Tell me you want to hear all about it.

3. When I say I’m feeling ugly force me to look at myself and remind me that my flaws only make me stronger in the end. Plus you know I love my eyes!

4. Let me rant about things I know you don’t care about and then stop me in mid-sentence with the words “You’re right, you’re always right. Everyone else is a moron compared to you.” (Because you know how that instantly calms me down.)

5. Role-play with me. I love pretending you’re the healthier and less socially awkward Roger to my HIV and drug free Mimi.

6. Be yourself with me. Let me see your flaws and your weaknesses. And I’ll do the same.

7. Don’t keep your distance from me in the mornings. As grumpy as I am during that time, know that your cheerfulness still makes me smile on the inside…even if I am telling you to get the hell out of my face before I cut up every last one of your frisbee golf discs.

So! Since my last blog I’ve moved, with my boyfriend, to a new apartment that is closer to work for both of us, a little cheaper, bigger, but surrounded by even more annoying people. Yeah, i actually miss the elderly couple who enjoyed running their vaccuum at odd hours of the day. *Sigh* Now we have door slammers, a klepto kid who has a way with a deck of cards and a family of three who will hopefully never find out that I know Arabic…

Anyway things aren’t all that bad, really. And I’m actually in a much better mood and state of mind than I have been more recently! Dustin and I spent the weekend in Kansas where he hung out with relatives and celebrated a cousin’s 30th birthday. I’ve been dealing with wicked insomnia and a pretty bad chest cold so I was left to myself in a cheap but not too bad motel room. Spent much of the time outlining and writing, and just relaxing. I’ve read two books since then (Harlequin romance books) and am almost done with honestly one of the best books I’ve read in some time now, Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. It’s a historical fiction story that focuses on the lives of four black slaves in the 1850’s. Reading it has given me some ideas for my own writing and has made me think of the correlations of modern-day consensual slavery and the slavery black people endured hundreds of years ago. I’m sort of thinking about writing something that is darker than usual and deals with forced slavery in a way that is comparable to what people experienced back in the 1850s but I don’t know. I’d have to do some research and a lot of planning. Or maybe not. I seem to write the best when I say screw it with the preplanning and research and just write from my heart/gut. 

Eh. I think that’s about it for now! Oh! I am back to writing Julissa and Gregg’s story. No title as of yet but I’ve finally found a way to make it work. All it took? Dustin handing me a brand new spiral-bound notebook and green ink pen and demanding that I write. And write I did. It’s not great but it’s a start, and it’s reminded me that I write better when I write from the heart/gut. I don’t know why I let myself get bogged down with worries that what I’m writing sucks. So what if it sucks? That’s what revisions and rewrites are for!
