βΎ πThe Collector and the image of the Crescent in Slavic mythologyπ β½
β Heβs something different than demons or witches. Heβs a child of the stars.
β The Collector and the cult
Crescent and Stars were revered by the slavic people as Gods of the sky; Halych proverb says: Β«Our crescent is our God and whoβs gonna be a God when he is not around?β ("ΠΌΠ΅ΡΡΡ Π½Π°Ρ Π±ΠΎΠΆΠΎΠΊ, Π° ΠΊΡΠΎ ΠΆ Π½Π°ΠΌ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΅Ρ Π±ΠΎΠ³ΠΎΠ²Π°ΡΠΈ, ΡΠΊ Π΅Π³ΠΎ Π½Π΅ ΡΡΠ°Π½Π΅?").
β The Collector and his childish nature
The constant changes in the phases of the moon led to the notion about the fickle, changeable and unstable nature of the Crescent; it was believed that it could become despondent real fast and become thinner because it saddens that it is alone in the welkin (sky) without the Sun, literally pines away because of anguish. The shape of the Crescent unwittingly was associated with cut up face, so that is why in some gubernyas (provinces) waning after full moon Crescent is named βΠΏΠ΅ΡΠ΅ΠΊΡΠΎΠΉβ (from the word βto cutβ; means the changing of moon fazes). The Crescent is prideful and provocative; in all fairytales where they, with the Sun, appear as lovers, exactly the Crescent becomes unwitting instigator of a quarrel and all of their dates (eclipses) ends up in a earthquake. The Crescent is really young and so that is why it is trusting and empathic; people seek help from it in incantations, addressing it like a young knyaz (prince/duke)
β About the colour palette
The Sun is not red by itself - the word βredβ means βshiningβ. For the Slavic people the Sun is white. This kind of epithet we can see in literary expressions: βWhite day and white lightβ; the first one got his meaning of the Universe, meaning of all we can see, illuminated by heavenly (or sky) light; we can say that the Sun is an owner of the Universe, it is the God that sees everything.
β About the eyes
The Sun, the Crescent and the Stars - are vigilant sky knights, from the eyes of whom no one or nothing canβt hide; The heroes of many folk fairytales ask them to give answers on all of the tough life situations: βYour light, - they say, - shines through all the living, you know everything!β. You canβt look for long at the Crescent or it will drag you to it, and that means that the person will die. That is why the Crescent, and the Sun, likes to play hide-and-seek in fairytales; they always win.
β About the hair
The Crescent is grizzled; This why in some fairytales he is an old man.
β About the monster hunting
The Crescent, and the Sun were imagined as devilry hunters. People were seeking the Suns help when there was protection needed, so that it could incinerate monsters. It was seen as the protector of the orphans and homeless folk. In some nations the Crescent is named βThe Sun of the nightβ; according to Russian expression: βThe Crescent is the Sun of the dead and drowned.β
β About the mirror
The ones who had broken the mirror assure that in nights they can see the devilry in it; Mirror also associated with the solar disk. A broken mirror portends misfortune or even death, it also points to the solar eclipse when, according to folk opinion, devilry tries to attack the Sun and seek to destroy it.
