piwik archiving error - PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of x bytes exhausted

per Piwik, change the following php config files:

/etc/php5/cli/php.ini /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini

edit to:

memory_limit = 512M

Don't forget to restart apache.

It appears that problem was fixed for me

express looks cooool

I played with meteor and I created my first small applications and thought it was so cool but when I realize it was completely broken on IE I was a bit discouraged (yes... I will debug and see what silly mistake I might have made) and looking for other node web app frameworks. and this stackoverflow conversation took me to express.

I am planning to take a look deeper next weekend but applications list is quiet interesting and a bit fascinated by it so far.

error sending piwik report via email

I am running Piwik on EC2 Ubunutu.

I was getting error on sending report.

Logged in to server and see if "sendmail" was installed but it wasn't...

So I installed postfix (sudo apt-get install postfix)

really... That's all I had to do to fix

upgrade amazon ec2 instance

Upgrading amazon ec2 instance was so easy.

My free micro instance was reaching CPU usage nearly 100% steadily and needed a bit more disk space too.

I was able to change instance type to increase CPU/RAM resource and resized ebs volume within 5 min.

Much happier now.

Piwik: set up auto-archiving on ubuntu ec2

Installed Piwik on ec2. Increased ebs volume to 100GB. upgraded from micro to m1.medium... though widget load is very slow.

per Piwik's recommendation, I set it up auto-archiving.

1. first you need to install php5-curl and restart apache

sudo apt-get install php5-curl

sudo service apache2 restart

2. then switch user to www-data (owner of apache)

sudo su www-data

3. test run script

/usr/bin/php5 /var/www/analytics/misc/cron/archive.php -- url=http://stats.example.com/ > /tmp/piwik-archive.log

4. if all happy, create cron job

MAILTO="[email protected]"

5 * * * * /usr/bin/php5 /var/www/analytics/misc/cron/archive.php -- url=http://stats.example.com/ > /tmp/piwik-archive.log

5. make sure to follow the instruction on Piwik site to change General settings to "Disable browser triggers for Piwik archiving and limit Piwik reports to updating every hour"

and result is looking great!

You see between 04:00 and 06:00 there is no line exists. That's when I stop the instance and performed some instance upgrade.

Then after that, I set cronjob and now every hour you see medium to big spike while running hourly report archiving task.

Thinking about setting up linux dev server?

Evaluating between rackspace vs linode?

I did linode once but as much as I use (weekend experiment) EC2 end up cheapest solution for me.

It took me a few clicks to set things up and my dev server was up and running in about one min.

During the process, you will download your private key to access to the server. Apply

chmod 400 <path-to-pem>

then

ssh i- <path-to-pem> ubuntu@<your-ect-ip>

and you are in.
