Too small. Too dark. Too light. Too much pattern. Not enough patternâŚ
Mika isnât usually so picky (okay, that might be a bit of a lie) but his style factor has been dropping at an alarming rate since he came to Korea. He needs the best. Having left most of his stuff, including his wardrobe, back in Japan, heâs been surviving off the five decent outfits he brought over in his carry on.
But that ends today. Hopefully. If he can find something presentable.
Stylenanda wouldnât be his first choice for a brand, but itâs about the best he can get without travelling to Daehan. Resisting the urge to sigh loudly, he keeps going through the shirts. The menâs section wasnât exactly big, let alone the larger sizes. If only Mika was shorter. The woes of being tall.
A girl walks past him. Mika nearly snaps at her until he gives her a once over. Sheâs pretty and⌠doesnât seem particularly approachable, despite the employee tag tacked onto her shirt. She has the air of someone who has better things to do. Mika can certainly relate.
Not that that really means anything. Heâs pretty sure everyone in this town has better things to do than mull around in the middle of nowhere.
Humming, he grabs the only shirt he liked that actually fit him off the rack and quickly follows her step. âHey,â he calls, not waiting for her to turn around. âYou work here, right? Are you the manager? Why are there only like four XL menâs shirts? Are there any more in the back?â
ugh. why.
that always seemed to be the thought on her mind, especially whenever she was at work, which seemed to be most of the time these days. she truly wished she had better things to do than just hang around the store all the time, picking up extra shifts and extra cash, to the point where she was on overtime pay almost every week. well, she wanted to save up for the future so she could be doing something that would slap a smile on her face. this job was just dumb.Â
she was folding shirts at the front display before spying a customer waiting by the checkout, and of course her coworker was nowhere to be found. with a sigh, she starts to make her way up to the front to help them, before sheâs stopped - or at least the guy attempts to stop her - with a spewing of ridiculous questions he somehow thought she had the answer to. she doesnât stop walking, continuing on to the counter, moving behind it and punching in her code to get the computer and scanning system going.Â
âi do work here, iâm not the manager, and i have no idea. i can check for more after i check this customer out, give me a moment.â her tone is so monotone and uninterested that layers of settled dust were envious of her apathy. she cashes the customer out rather quickly, looking as bored as ever, bagging her clothes and handing her the receipt before handing the bag over wordlessly. she turns to the man, now, finally looking at him and giving him her attention. her brow creases as she looks him over, slight confusion etched into her expression now. âyou donât look like an extra large. unless... oh. youâre tall. must be the length. sucks.â she sighs, pulling up the inventory invoice on her computer. âwere the four shirts out there not to your liking or something?â
đ
a memory that makes them feel angry
oh lord, too many. sheâs grown to be a bitter person, so just about anything can set her off these days. when someone disrespects and disses art, for instance, it riles her up. whenever she hears people go on and on about the glamorous idol world, she wants to puke on their shoes. not just puke, no no, puke on their shoes. just so they know what itâs like to go through all that hoping and dreaming and hard work only to have every promise spat back up and chucked at their feet, like she did. yeah, the babbling dreamers who criticize her for âgiving upâ, they make her angry.
đ
a memory that makes them feel guilty
more guilt? well then, she supposes sheâs a little guilty over the situation with her step-dad. as much as she wants to love him, as much as sheâs grateful for everything heâs done for her, she still canât find it in herself to consider him a father. heâs like a.... middle-aged pal of hers, a buddy that helps her out. heâs an elder, a mentor maybe, but not a dad. she makes the effort, when she can. heck she sees him one on one more often than she does her own mother (thereâs some unspoken bad blood there, donât ask), so she really does want to be that daughter for him. she hopes to get there one day but right now she just... canât.Â

a memory about a good deed they did
what the heck is a good deed? sora couldnât tell you. she equates doing her job and helping customers a good deed, even if sheâs not exactly enthused about it whenever she goes over to help them. still, sheâs learned a lot about beauty from her time at stylenanda so when a customer asks for personalized assistance, sheâs able to give it to them. not a single customer has come away unhappy with her choice of product for them, just soraâs attitude made them a little huffy, but she could live with that. they had their product and she had her commission.Â
đ
a memory that makes them feel guilty
ah... not doing more for sunggeun. him staying in seoul even after their families had given up on their apartment and pulled them back to town was worrying enough, but somehow they had lost contact, and sora had had no idea what had happened to him. she had no idea if he was okay, if he was housed, clothed, fed, if he had another contract... all she knew was that he was completely alone out there, and she kicks herself often for not sticking out there with him or sending him money, or even just searching for him to drag him home. she just... left him out there. it eats her up whenever she lets herself get lost in thought, her mind almost always goes to him and drowns her in regrets.Â
âŁ
a memory that leaves them laughing
these days she doesnât laugh much, it takes quite a bit to get her smiling even. finding something that can bring out a chuckle is hard, but she supposes if anyone can do it, itâs myungsoh, her quirky neighbour and customer, of sorts. at this point she considers him a friend, but she doesnât let him know that. one of their funniest memories was when she made a sarcastic joke and he had taken it seriously, saying she shouldâve told him sooner so they could get married. it was the craziest reaction she had ever heard to receiving the âknowledgeâ of possessing a stalker. his reasoning? that it would save his skin if he gave her, sora the âstalkerâ, what she wanted. he was such a character. he definitely kept things interesting for her.Â

She looked at the otherâs hand as she paused, lipstick being held aloft, but not being passed to her and for a moment she contemplated asking if she was alright, but before she could react, the saleswoman had placed it back into its spot. âNot the right one?â she asked, as though nothing was wrong with that. âIt did look nice though!â she was still as friendly sounding as ever, but soon the other had turned her attention to her and she knew it was time to get to work. Hearing a confirmation that yeah, there really was a former idol, or at least someone who was going to be one, anyway was there, she decided to see what the other was willing to part with for information.Â
âOh really?â her voice was inquisitive, ready to get into it with the other.  âSo, I have some sources that told me that she was forced to leave,â she began, not actually having any sources other than her own imagination.  âThey told me that, get this, that she had a pregnancy scare. Turns out she wasnât, but it was too much for the company to risk, especiallyâŚand this is the really juicy part,â she was grinning slyly, on a roll now and she couldnât stop herself. âTurns out, she had a sponsor. You know? The guys that pay money to have some⌠one on one time with idols?â she asked, thinking that this was some prime gossip, even if she was making it up as she went. âAnd he was the one that it almost happened with. Isnât that wild? Iâm not sure how she ended up here in town, but thatâs crazy right?âÂ
For a moment panic flourishes within her chest, not wanting to be caught as the subject of conversation, but she manages to play it off. âMm, not quite. We should probably do some swatches to see what goes best with your skintone.â She takes the girlâs hand, trying her best to be gentle and not forceful with the rage building up inside of her as the girl yammers on, pulling out random shades in the peach and orange family, swatching them on her hand. She wasnât really paying attention to the colours now, she didnât care to find something just right for this gossip girl.Â
âWow, yeah, thatâs so crazy.â She keeps a hold on her hand, thumb pressed inside her wrist, her grip firm as she looks her dead in the eye. âShame none of itâs true, you big fat liar.â She applies pressure on the soft, fleshy, sensitive part of her wrist, tempted to dig a nail in and give her a real warning. âYou need to watch your mouth, and get some brains. Figure out who youâre talking to before you go and spew all of your bullshit. My name is Sora, and Iâm the would-be idol youâve been spouting off about. Now, you want to tell me why youâre making up a bunch of crap about me? Last time I checked my life was none of your business.â She yanks her in, not planning on letting her go anytime soon. She was going to get her answers, and she was going to get them now.

gnsunggeunâ:
@gnsora
there was an inevitability to running into people he used to know. a small town of nobodies all trying to be somebody through gossip. itâs one of the reasons he left, and yet, he found himself relying on the whispers to find out where she lived. five years together, and he didnât have a forwarding address except for âhomeâ. the tip of his fingers rubbed together, trying to wipe away the scent of smoke and his paced steps back and forth, trying to air out the scent of alcohol. at least in his fluorescent clothing for work, the steel capped boots and dirty jeans made took away the knowledge of how many he had had to find the nerve.
they werenât on bad terms, not that he remembered â but he had a good habit of not remembering the people he had bad terms with. signing those contracts half-drunk and half not himself. for all he knew, she didnât want to see him, thought he was dead, would hug him. sunggeun didnât know what was the worst one of those options, but they each came with their own wrench in his stomach. one hand digging back into his pocket, fishing out his packet of cigarettes and lighting up his third. his eyes darting up over the apartment building, recounting the number heâd gotten from the old woman who was selling things down his street and then exhaled the smoke.
now or never, he guessed.
heâd run the doorbell a couple times, wandered away and then inched his way back. if he didnât see her now, itâd be worse later. just get it over with. his shoulders slumped as he leaned against the wall outside her door, fiddling with the packet of cigarettes again, opening, plucking one out, twisting it over his fingers and putting it back again. more than once lifting his gaze when he heard steps coming. sunggeunâs body tensing up when he looked up and saw her. a crooked, uneasy smile. âsora, heyâ â impulsively came from his lips. like it hadnât been a couple years and some change. âyou get in late.â
sora didnât really have friends or family. technically she did. technically her mom and stepdad were family, technically, but it felt like she didnât know them anymore. technically she had friends from before she went to seoul for training, but people changed, and with the amount of time that was spent away, she was barely a semblance of her former self. her only true friend these past couple years had been minhyung, he was the only one who seemed to understand, and they didnât see each other too often. really, sora was alone here.Â
it was tough, realizing she only had one person really, when she had left on that trip with three others. she had no idea what happened to sunggeun after they parted ways, but she was always worried about him. he had changed towards the end, and he had started drinking, it was concerning. she couldnât tell what had come of him, her best guess was as good as anyone elseâs. she missed him though, truly.Â
it was nice to live walking distance from her workplace, especially when she got stuck with the late shifts. town was always quiet in the evening, it made for a nice walk to clear her head before heading up to bed, but it also made her easily startled. the voice that came from the near-darkness had her nearly jump back, freezing in place. it took a moment of the shock wearing off before before recognition set in. âs-... sunggeun?â she took a step closer, trying to make sure she wasnât seeing a ghost. a few more steps, a hand reaching to cup his face gently and she had her confirmation, he was real. âoh my god..â her arms wrap around him tightly, embracing him tightly, her face out of sight now. he didnât have to see the tears forming in her eyes, thank goodness, she didnât need people thinking she had emotions. âwhere have you been? i missed you so much, you idiot.â

Not all friends are made equal. At least, for Myungsoh, any friend ready to dye his hair and cut it at an ungodly hour of the night deserves his upmost respect and automatically places high on his list of human relations.
the fact that it was soraâa busy woman getting her grind every day at stylenanda attending to customers like myungsoh? bless her heart.Â
he still didnât quite understand how she came to agree, but he was ready and has all of his materials prepared. his studio was small, but he had a chair and a little towel set up for the ritual haircut and bought everything needed himself. why make sora spend money when she was already doing him a massive favour?Â
they had made arrangements in passing; they saw each other in brief intervals quite frequently, and sometimes he even managed to get a little smile out of the womanâa personal accomplishment he always strove for.
he decided that his next hair colour of choice was a nice orange(cheeto orange, though sora didnât like that name) and relaxed until it was finally time.
1am on the dot.
sora was his downstairs neighbor after all, it wouldnât take long for him to get to her and back up. he knocked on her door gently, wary of waking up the other tenants.
surely the others wouldnât fully understand that hair grows the best and the fastest on a full moon. this was to be kept low-key.
âmiss sora? miss sora, iâm ready! are you awake?âÂ
God why?
Sora canât remember making this deal with him, maybe it had been sarcastic or maybe she just genuinely forgot, but being woken at one in the morning when she had an early shift the next day wasnât pleasant in the slightest.Â
She hears his voice as she makes her way groggily to the door, groaning under her breath and opening the door, squinting up at him. Yup, it was him. He had to be the quirkiest guy she knew, honestly, but... it made him special. She appreciated it, even though she never showed it. She actually had a slight soft spot for him. He kept her life interesting to say the least, hence why she wasnât punching him for waking her up right now.Â
Sheâs in an oversized t-shirt with nothing but a pair of boringly grey boy-short cut panties on underneath, hardly decent. She uses the door to cover her legs as she peaks her head out, her hair a slightly frazzled mess. âYes? Myungsoh, what is it? I have work tomorrow.âÂ

a memory that made them feel special
well, well. aside from being scouted and training to become an idol, thereâs one person and the way he always smiles so warmly whenever he sees her that makes her feel incredibly special. she tells herself itâs just because they were scouted together and lived together while training, that they spent so much time together that that was the reason for her being so kind and looking at her like she was made of gold. she isnât that special that itâs actually herself and her personality that has him light up whenever she enters the room, that allows them to be so comfortable together and has them bringing out the best in each other. it couldnât be, but... deep down she knows sheâs that special someone, unique enough that sheâs touched him, specifically her, and that little buried nugget of knowledge has her smiling just as brightly whenever heâs around her too, which is so painfully rare an expression for her. heâs special too, in every way possible.

a memory that made them feel special
why, being scouted of course!
sora had had stars in her eyes back then, and simply going to seoul and seeing the city was enough to put her in awe. the moment she had arrived though, she had been spotted, and someone had seen something in her, something so great and so special that they thought she would be a star. who wouldnât feel special because of that? someone saw star quality in her, a spark, the ability to be an idol and be loved by the masses. it made her feel incredibly special when so many people dreamed of this lifestyle and wanted to be among the handful of performers sprinkled through korea. she hadnât even had to try, someone just looked at her and said âyes, we need herâ. itâs one of the most amazing memories she has.Â
đ
a memory that gets their heart pounding
in the traditional sense, sora has rarely, if ever, felt her heart pound in any instance. heart pounding was meant for people who were in love or who had strong feelings, right? the most common place for soraâs heart to pound was on stage.Â
towards the middle of her time spent as a trainee, she had become what they call a public trainee and had starred in a music video for a senior artistâs song. she could still remember looking up at the man she idolized, whose songs she covered for evaluations, whose performances she monitored. there she was, acting in his music video, pretending to be his girlfriend for the plot of the video. she wasnât the one singing herself, but people would see her in this music video, would learn of her existence as a trainee and potential idol one day. people would take notice of her and look out for her, maybe even like her and become her fan.Â
her heart was racing.Â
