#ANALYSIS ; MAUL.

it always fucks me up that maul was a child that loved nature. he loved animals. no child is born with hate in their hearts - sideous saw an innocent kid and decided to strip away every ounce of softness she had. ripped away any semblance of culture that she could have connected to. never allowed her hair to grow out because of how important it was to night sister practices. the only thing maul had was a robot that also abused her - shocked her when she got any questions wrong, broke her arm, her ribs, and yet she still tried to find some understanding with it bc it showed her kindness just once... then that was taken from her too and now all she had was sideous.

#ooc.#reminder that i use she / her for the first 22ish years of maul's life #but it sits with me constantly. like palps really took such a timid and sweet child and just... obliterated her MULTIPLE times.

maul not being white is actually very important and I will elaborate in a moment

maul is a brown man, it doesn't make sense for him to be white. It's obvious that night sister / night brother culture was inspired by north african culture. it also plays into how sideous, an influential, hypercapitalist, rich white man from coruscant, basically stole an indigenous man away from his culture and groomed him into becoming a weapon - which is something white people often did to indigenous groups. maul's people have a noticeable non-white accent and maul now speaks with a ' posh ' english accent, specifically one from coruscant - very similar to how sideous speaks... which was also another form of erasure often employed by white people against indigenous people. they were often punished for speaking their native language and speaking with a distinct accent, which was also another form of erasure often employed by white people against indigenous people. this leads into sideous' dehumanization of maul... sideous often hid maul away because of plagueis, but also because he doesn't pass for human / white ( this also exists alongside wanting to keep the return of the sith a secret, two things can coexist ). sideous never saw maul as his equal in that regard. maul's appearance was perfect to use as an assassin / weapon but never for public appearances in sideous' eyes. even when maul was presented to people, he was used for intimidation... think about the racial implications.

#i have so many thoughts brewing in my brain bc I've been talking about it with agar #but it's such a huge part of my characterization for him #especially with his connection to sideous and the like #I'll write a whole essay about it one day i swear #ooc.

slowly leaning more and more towards the ' tattoos ' the nightbrothers and nightsisters have, actually being markings that grow with age, akin to tiger stripes. they're usually born with nonspecific ' blobs ' of black on their skin that becomes more and more defined as they get older - usually determined by clan / lineage.

It's interesting to think about how maul has an inherent distrust or even dislike towards humans since a human had been his abuser for 20+ years. Like he'd rather work with a fellow alien species than be paired with a human if it were his choice - although it's lessened over the years, it's still something he feels subconsciously.

I have yet to read wrath of darth maul so I technically have no idea what their relationship was actually like. But the teens at my school pierced each other so I assume this is something they definitely must have done too, yes yes.

ofc I'm thinking about maul gender things but she felt most comfortable wearing layers in tpm. functional layers that she could easily move around in but covered up any signs of obvious gender presentation. ofc it's the reasonable choice but I think it was also trying to branch out as much as she could within the very small constraints that she was in. qui-gon referring to maul as ' it ' didn't bother her at the time bc she was hardly a person, a weapon was all she was, why should a blade care about what it's being referred to as? but it sat with him for years afterwards and now he hates being referred to as a thing because he is no one's knife anymore. he is his own monster.

even more scattered thoughts but I think maul started to question things a lot more during her time at orsis academy, including her gender ( she was around 7-15 at the beginning and end of her time there ). she became best friends with a nautolan named kilindi and I think she truly influenced her to start thinking for herself more ( which i think sideous knew about but was waiting for the moment to use that against maul, which he did later on ), and ofc she started to wonder if she was truly a girl or not, but she didn't have a name for her feelings whatsoever. she only confided in kilindi and kilindi was supportive, but a part of maul was still afraid of fully thinking for herself so she tried to shove those feelings down the best she could. when sideous told her to kill everyone at the academy ( she believed she had no choice, it was either do that or try to run away with kilindi, where they would both die regardless ), including kilindi, maul figured it would be better for kilindi to die at her hands than at sideous'... after that she lost any sense of self apart from being a weapon for sideous because what's the use in thinking she could be anything else than an object? there was no value to be had in questioning who she was if she wasn't a person to begin with.
