The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries/territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A country/territory’s score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 - 10, where 0 means that a country is perceived as highly corrupt and 10 means that a country is perceived as very clean. A country's rank indicates its position relative to the other countries/territories included in the index. The graph highlights continental corruption trends. Scandinavia for example - although not a continent - scores low on corruption when compared to Africa, which scores high on corruption levels as a whole. Such trends can support existing knowlege and perceptions that countries with hostile socio-political landscapes and poor infastructure are more likely to have higher levels of corruption. The graph however, also indicates anomolies that break such trends. A good example of this is in outh Amerca, which scores high on corruption levels as a whole with exception to Chile and Uruguay, which score similarly to the UK and USA. Further data would be needed to understand the reasons for such anomolies, but political policies and institutional setup may be a pat of the reason for such low corruption rates.
