PROLOGUE:

Catarina Beaumont, better known as Cat, lives in the town of Willow Creek, Pennsylvania, with her sister, Allie. She spends her days working as a photographer, determined to save enough money to launch her own fashion line and turn her dreams into reality. Life is simple, comfortable, and predictable—until a string of gruesome murders begins to shake the town.

As fear spreads through Willow Creek, rumors start to circulate about what—or who—is responsible. While most people try to stay indoors and avoid the danger, Cat can’t ignore her growing curiosity. The deeper she digs into the mystery, the more she realizes that something isn’t right. Strange sightings, unsettling encounters, and secrets hidden within the surrounding woods begin pulling her into a terrifying world she never knew existed.

What starts as a small-town tragedy soon becomes something much darker, and Cat finds herself face-to-face with dangers beyond anything she could have imagined.

CHAPTER ONE: The Beginning

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

A groan escaped Catarina Beaumont as she blindly reached across her nightstand, smacking her alarm clock until the annoying noise finally stopped.

For a few moments, she stayed buried beneath her blankets, staring at the ceiling through half-open eyes. The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains of her bedroom, painting the walls with a soft golden glow.

“Five more minutes…” she mumbled.

Unfortunately, five more minutes quickly turned into the realization that she had work.

Cat sat up with a sigh, her pink hair sticking out in every direction imaginable. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes before stretching her arms above her head.

The house was quiet.

Well… mostly.

She could hear dishes clinking downstairs.

That meant Allie was already awake.

After dragging herself out of bed, Cat shuffled toward her bathroom and began getting ready. She brushed her teeth, washed her face, and spent a little extra time fixing her hair. Once she was satisfied, she picked out a comfortable outfit for work and headed downstairs.

The smell of breakfast greeted her immediately.

Allie stood at the stove, humming softly while cooking.

“Morning,” Cat yawned.

Allie glanced over her shoulder.

“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty.”

Cat rolled her eyes.

“I wasn’t sleeping that late.”

“You hit snooze three times.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because your alarm is loud enough for the entire neighborhood to hear.”

Cat laughed and grabbed a plate.

The two sisters sat down together at the kitchen table.

Their home wasn’t huge, but it was cozy.

Cat had always loved that about it.

The walls were filled with family photos, decorations, and little memories collected over the years. It felt safe.

Comfortable.

Normal.

For a while they chatted about random things.

Work.

Bills.

The weather.

Nothing important.

Then Allie’s expression changed slightly.

“Did you hear about what happened downtown?”

Cat looked up.

“No?”

Allie hesitated.

“Someone was murdered.”

The room suddenly felt quieter.

Cat blinked.

“What?”

“They found a body near one of the walking trails.”

“You’re joking.”

“I wish I was.”

Cat stared at her sister.

Willow Creek wasn’t the kind of town where things like that happened.

Sure, it wasn’t tiny, but everyone still knew everyone.

News traveled fast.

Murders?

That wasn’t normal.

“Do they know who did it?” Cat asked.

Allie shook her head.

“No. Police haven’t said much.”

“That’s creepy.”

“Tell me about it.”

The conversation didn’t last much longer after that.

Neither of them really knew what to say.

Eventually Cat checked the time and stood up.

“I should get going.”

“Be careful today.”

Cat laughed.

“It’s one murder, Al.”

Allie crossed her arms.

“That’s still one more murder than we usually have.”

“Fair point.”

After grabbing her camera equipment, Cat headed out the door.

The rest of the morning passed quickly.

Photography wasn’t always exciting, but she enjoyed it.

She spent most of the day taking portraits and helping customers.

Between appointments, she found herself thinking about what Allie had told her.

A murder.

It sounded unreal.

Every customer seemed to be talking about it too.

Some claimed it was a drifter.

Others blamed a serial killer.

A few people even spread ridiculous ghost stories.

Cat tried not to pay attention.

Rumors always got out of control in small towns.

By the time her shift finally ended, the sun had already begun its slow descent toward the horizon.

The late afternoon sky glowed orange and pink.

Cat packed her things and headed home.

Halfway there, she decided she wanted a snack.

A few minutes later she pulled into a local gas station.

The place was mostly empty.

Only a couple cars sat near the pumps.

Cat wandered inside and grabbed a drink along with a bag of chips.

After paying, she stepped back outside.

That’s when she noticed it.

Something moved near the tree line across the road.

She paused.

The woods stretched behind the gas station, dark and dense.

For a second she thought she saw a person standing there.

Watching.

Tall.

Completely still.

Cat frowned.

When she looked again, there was nothing.

Just trees.

The evening breeze rustled the leaves.

“Okay… that’s weird.”

She laughed nervously.

Maybe her imagination was getting carried away after hearing about the murder all day.

That had to be it.

People scared themselves all the time.

Shaking her head, she got into her car and drove away.

Still, she couldn’t help glancing in her rearview mirror.

The woods disappeared behind her.

Nothing followed.

Nothing was there.

By the time she reached home, the strange feeling had mostly faded.

The smell of dinner greeted her as soon as she walked through the front door.

“I’m home!” she called.

“Kitchen!” Allie shouted back.

Cat smiled.

Normal.

Everything was normal.

Dinner was warm and comforting, and for a while the two sisters talked about their day just like always.

The murder was mentioned again, but neither of them lingered on the subject.

Outside, darkness slowly settled over Willow Creek.

Streetlights flickered on.

The town grew quiet.

Peaceful.

Yet somewhere beyond the safety of the Beaumont home, hidden among the endless trees surrounding Willow Creek, unseen eyes watched from the shadows.
