It means what I said, Gardenia was meant to be on that mission, originally she was supposed to go, but then she… well. Something happened, and she couldn’t- one of her siblings went in her place.
Even if she was really really really against it and essentially tried to wrestle herself over to her sibling and not let them do that shit, her sibling still went..
And we know what happened.
…that sibling doesn’t have a name, and that’s for story reasons, since Gardenia is… not sure how it feels to label and name someone who will never be able to hear it- but eventually she’ll come around to it… probably talking with Rocky and Grace about it since Rocky knew their sibling till the end.
The sibling also had pebbles. None that hatched yet… Gardenia feels responsible for how they had to live without a parent, and.. the fact that many of them didn’t live that long because of the loss
Gardenia was meant to be an engineer on there.
She helped with the ship before the mission even started.. so to find out something she took part in had been the reason of so many deaths… and of her sibling no less. She carries guilt, even before Rocky gets back… you just know she was haunted for all those years about worries- about things she’d help construct in the ship, about how her sibling was faring…
Annyyyyways Gardenia is the quiet pebbles caretaker because after all of what they’ve dealt with, it made her disgusted to see someone throwing out their own young. Their own family. She was never family oriented, but… maybe she can make up for the losses she helped cause.

I have a feeling you guys are just gonna shove Corvid, Seaside (pebbles parents), and Vantablack on a room together and beat them with hammers or something/silly
Okay but uh since I haven’t drawn them- basic descriptions for now.
Corvid was named that less because of how they look even though admittedly they are a dark shade, but more because of how it can partially mimic people’s speak like Ravens and Crows but it’s not perfect, just some picked up mimicry— Lyrebird has that but is like a million times better
