"the imaginary or hypothetical harm that we believe a black person to be capable of enacting will always be less socially acceptable than the harm we know for a fact white people materially cause" the movie.
Health classes really ought to teach people what the beginning stages of addiction are like because a lot of people donât realize theyâre addicted to something until theyâre years deep into it.
Signs you might be getting addicted to something:
If you go without it you feel unwell in a way that you never usually feel unwell. Sweating, tired, sleepy, headaches, irritable, depressed, etc. For example when I was in opium withdrawal I got incredibly depressed in a way that Iâve never been before or since. When you quit caffeine you might get super bad headaches even if you never usually get any headaches.
Thoughts of it regularly bother you and the thoughts go away once youâve taken it but only temporarily. Unlike with a food craving which usually stays away once youâve satisfied it or distracted yourself from it.
You find yourself rationalizing with yourself why you should break your own rules about how much you can take and how often. For example you might only let yourself drink alcohol every four days but start thinking that three days is actually close enough to four days, right? Especially if this happens regularly.
Youâre using it so often that you feel the need to lie about how much you use because other people might think itâs concerning
If the substance or activity is nearby itâs genuinely difficult to not consume it or participate in it in a way thatâs really frustrating.
You feel bad when youâre not on it and your brain tells you âif you just take the thing you wouldnât feel this wayâ
You can only feel âwholeâ or ânormalâ when youâre on a substance even though itâs a recreational drug
And if you read this and think you might be addicted to something, donât panic and donât feel ashamed. Realizing youâre addicted to something isnât a failure. Itâs more information about your health that you can use to manage your condition, whether you want to get rid of your addiction or not.
a good thing to note is that when you start to suspect addiction, if you're looking at the signs early, there is a possibility for you to regain control!
if you see any of the signs listed above, you are likely still in the window of "i should reign this in", and it is very likely that if you decide to do so in this moment, you will succeed.
most people in active addiction don't figure it out until they are deep enough into it that the psychological aspect becomes too powerful, especially because they don't know how to recognize these signs. if education were more well-rounded, a lot less people would end up stuck in addiction because you genuinely can take control if you realize you've gone too far early enough.
my basic tenet is, if i start showing signs of addiction, i quit for six months. no matter what it is. six months is enough time to get through the detox, it's enough time to start putting my head into the right space and look at the situation less objectively, and it's enough time to build a new ruleset if i decide to go back to using. this has worked for me multiple times, with several different substances.
however, if you find yourself in a cycle of doing this regularly, you're likely past the point of being able to regain control. nicotine has its grip in me because i let myself slip and stopped stopping when i saw it get unhealthy.
if you are struggling with an active addiction, and you can't muster the control to quit for 6 months, or on that 6 month day you go right back to it, and you don't want that life, you need to seek help. it has to be your choice, but you need to understand that if you do not want an active addiction, you have to take action and that does mean getting help from someone, whatever path works for you. there will come a point where you realize you can't do it alone, and that's the time to seek help. and there is nothing wrong with that. you're only human, and we can only handle so much on our own. you got this.
have you noticed that everything depends on various factors

actually I think you should be normal about ordinary citizens of authoritarian countries and yes that applies even to that country you're thinking of right now
"but they support [dictator] and [violent action]!" okay is it possible that a combination of propaganda, election rigging, and authoritarian crackdowns on dissent could lead a population to look like it supports something most people would find distasteful under more reasonable circumstances

naomi osaka for wimbledon 2026
âI worked 20-hour days to make Naomi Osakaâs Wimbledon dressâ
The Japanese designer Hana Yagi created the striking all-white bridal-inspired kimono that drew cheers from the crowd at the All England Club
The Japanese kimono and the traditional western wedding dress are difficult enough to walk in, let alone play tennis. But Naomi Osaka did so anyway, emerging on to Wimbledonâs Court 3 in a gown that was a hybrid of both garments to play a round of practice shots.
The dress, which drew cheers and wolf whistles from the crowd, was the Japanese playerâs latest fashion display, following the gold sequinned outfit that she wore at the French Open and her extravagant turquoise and green dress at the Australian Open in January. Her Wimbledon effort was the work of Hana Yagi, a 26-year old Japanese designer, who created it alone in ten days in her studio in Tokyo.
2026 French open, designed by Kevin Germanier in collaboration with Nike:
Yagi was asked to create an outfit for the âwalk onâ, when players enter the court before the beginning of a match, a well-established opportunity for fashion statements. At the French Open, Osaka compared her sparkling dress to the illuminations of the Eiffel Tower. Her extraordinary Australian Open outfit was inspired by jellyfish.
Australian Open 2026, designed by Robert Wun for Nike:
But Wimbledon imposes strict rules â above all that all clothes must be completely white (Roger Federer once got a telling-off for wearing shoes with orange soles). âFirst, it had to be all white,â says Yagi. âVisually, [Harper] gave me the image of a kimono or junihitoe [a traditional 12-layered kimono of the Japanese imperial court]. As a part of the concept, they wanted to reinterpret the tradition in the context of sport.â
The vintage wedding dresses she had in her own stock were cream and ivory â shades unacceptable at Wimbledon. She went to shops in Tokyo and bought the pure white western style wedding dress that forms the lower part of the Osaka gown, and a shiromuku, the traditional nuptial kimono in which brides are wrapped for delivery to their new husbands.
It is this, embroidered with brocade images of cranes and cherry blossoms, that forms the upper part of the dress, but drastically restructured to allow freedom of movement. âI didnât want her to walk with small steps â in this she wonât have any difficulty walking,â Yagi says. âAnd itâs not like a tight corset, but a dress that Naomi herself can adjust.â Osaka wore her playing dress, created by her sponsor Nike, below Yagiâs creation, so it had to be lighter than a conventional kimono. The other condition was that the player had to be able to put on and remove the dress quickly.
âIt was my first experience of that, because all my past works were art pieces, and not really aiming to be functional,â she says. âBut this has to come on and off in three minutes. I kept it putting it on myself over and over again to confirm that it worked.â The secret ingredient? Extensive strips of Velcro.
