Buying an outdoor street sweeper? Avoid these 5 "spec-sheet traps"
When buying an outdoor sweeper, manufacturers love to throw big numbers at you. But real-world sweeping is a different beast. Before you swipe your card, check these 5 things that salespeople won't tell you:
Big Leaves vs. Fine Dust: If you have big autumn leaves, you need a wide suction mouth or mechanical throw-type, or it will clog every 50 yards. If you have fine cement dust, make sure it has an automatic electric filter-shaker, or it will turn into a dust-blowing dragon in 10 minutes.
The Water Tank Trap: A machine might have a 4-hour battery, but if the dust-suppression water tank runs dry in 1 hour, the machine is useless for the rest of the shift. The water capacity must match the battery runtime.
Puncture-Proof Tires: Outdoor pavement has nails, glass, and pallet splinters. Skip air-filled tires and go for solid, puncture-proof tires unless you want to spend your weekends fixing flats.
Enclosed Cab with AC: If it’s 95°F (35°C) outside and your sweeper has no roof or AC, your crew will "forget" to use it. It will just sit in the garage eating dust.
Hydraulic High-Dump: Outdoor trash (gravel, wet sand) is heavy. Don't make older operators manually lift a 100-lb bin. Get a hydraulic lift that dumps straight into the dumpster.
