          Have you ever heard of an illness called Aplastic Anemia, also known as Red Cell Aplasia? If you’ve not, then please read on, because this is the main reason why I game. First things first, I’m Taven, 24-years-old, and I’d consider myself a Casual to Semi-Hardcore Gamer. I’ve had this illness since I was three years old, so that makes it 21 years I’ve been fighting to keep my will as strong as Geralt’s steel sword, and as deadly as his silver sword to a ghoul’s throat. It’s been a tough battle, requiring Blood Transfusions every 2-3 weeks my entire life. Aplastic Anemia can have some causes, but it’s usually unknown causes; like my case. What happened is that my Bonemarrow stopped producing Red Blood Cells, and over time I slowed down until I became lethargic. I was brought to the E.R. and that is where they found out that I was dangerously low in my Hemoglobin, which we will just call my blood level.  I almost died… Technically I was dying, but I was lucky to have made it in time. Imagine that; a toddler movin’ about the house like a hurricane and within a few weeks doesn’t want to play or eat… Just sitting there on the couch like a true poe-tay-toe, falling asleep no matter what was done to keep me awake. Since then, I’ve received countless Blood Transfusions to stay alive. Through out my childhood, I could not be a normal kid. Having an over protective Grandmother did not help the situation, especially when the doctor tells her and my Mom that bruising wastes blood so I should not play sports, or practice martial arts.. No rough play, period. So I was not allowed to visit my friends, or play with them out in the front. None of that, just stay indoors and play with my 7-9 toy chests over flowing with toys.  I understand now why my Grandmother became a prison warden for me, but as a kid, I was angry at her for keeping me inside the house all the time. Seeing kids outside play, while I was being drowned with toys so that I wouldn’t think about wanting to go out there. My Mother was willing to let me do things, wanting me to get stronger and keep fit, but it was my Grandmother who kept shooting down any opportunities since at the time, I was her only Grandson. She didn’t want to take the risk, plus she was also a control freak on her own. Still, I found ways to rebel, always finding my way outside and coming back in with cuts and bruises because I was bent on being normal no matter what I had weighing me down. I was stubborn, adventurous, and stupid… Just to prove that I could be normal. But with all that going on, at the age of five, my uncle introduced me to the Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive. Where I came to play the first Game in my life; Mortal Kombat 2. Followed by Boogerman, Batman and Robin, Ristar, Columns, Virtua Fighter 2, etc. When I wasn’t outside rebelling, I was ignoring my boring toys, trying to beat my uncle with Scorpion as he played with Sub-Zero, Or trying to beat my uncle’s high score in Columns.  Gaming was becoming my escape when I was stuck inside, constantly being reminded that I’m “Weaker” than normal kids, that I can’t be what I want to be… Normal. There are a lot of people who see Video Games as a waste of time and money, they don’t realize that a lot of us Gamers NEED Gaming.. It is OUR ESCAPE from reality. Some of our lives are so hard to live that we need Gaming there to allow us to escape to a world we’ve never been to. Allow us to explore the land of Skyrim, or wreck your enemy with an RPG in Los Santos. Gaming has kept me from losing my sanity, it has kept me from thinking dark thoughts when I’m so exhausted from going to see the doctors every week. When I can’t have a normal social life because my illness nearly governs how I have to live. Over time; I came to have an Iron Overload which is slowly destroying my organs. It has already damaged some of my Liver, and prevents my Pancreas from producing insulin so I’ve been Diabetic for a few years now. I even need to start seeing a Cardiologist(Heart Doctor) now because it could be damaging that too… But even in this cloud of darkness, I still fight my way through. To stay alive, to be there for my family, and to inspire others to fight their battles too.  Gaming was there to keep me going, but don’t get me wrong, my Family has played a HUGE part in keeping me going too. But while I was stuck in the Hospital for 7 months, or just getting back from school… Gaming was what kept my spirits up while my Family was doing their own things. Gaming has evolved quite rapidly if I say so myself, and the ways it can be shared these days is amazing. Twitch, Youtube, Tumblr, etc… So now I have begun making Gaming Videos, and I stream on Twitch most days. To talk to my fellow Gamers, and share my Gaming experiences with everyone. I made a goal to get known and use my experiences in life to inspire others. I’m not in it for the money at all either, just to get my voice heard and become somewhat of a beacon of strength for those who need that person who’d come up to them and tell them: “Don’t let this defeat you, pick up your sword and shield and fight!” Know that I mean? I hope to be that person one day… And I hope you’re willing to help me reach that goal. Just send the word out, let people hear my story, and keep it growing until I find myself at the top, pulling others up there with me too.
