You could feel the eyes of the little redheaded girl just arrived from Jackson on you, she was sitting on a swing by herself, reading the Savage Starlight comic book, one that you liked too. You looked at her just as she took her eyes off the comic and looked at you. You raised your hand and waved at her, and she blushed like a red pepper and hid her face in the comic.

“Hello,” you said from the bench where you were sitting. The red haired girl looked up from the comic book and blushed again when she looked at you. “Sorry?”, she said closing the comic between her finger to mark the page. “I just said hello,” you said with a shrug. You got up from the bench and went to her and you didn't know how she wanted to run away and hide in the first hole she found. “Can I sit here?”, you said sitting down on the swing next to her, not waiting for her answer.

“You kind of already sat down,” she said avoiding eye contact with you. “I saw you looking at me and I thought maybe you wanted to talk,” you said looking at her. “I wasn't looking at you”, she looked at you and immediately looked away in embarrassment. “Okay, I think I made a mistake… but do you wanna talk anyway?”, you asked tilting your head to the side. She looked at you and she was still red as a tomato and you thought her shyness was cute. “Okay,” she said, smiling sheepishly.

“You enjoy this?”, you pointed at the comic book over her legs, “yeah… I like these things, I stole one from Joel's friend's house, now I have a collection of them, but not all of them”, she laughed dryly . “Really?, oh man that's cool! I only have one that I stole from my brother and I've read it like twenty times,” you laughed. “Well, Joel and I traveled a lot to get here and we always found these comics in the places we went”.

“That's awesome, dude! I run away from Jackson sometimes, but I never go very far.”

“How do you get out of here without getting caught?”

“Too easy”, you shrugged.

The red-haired girl shook her head and smiled, "Dude… I think you're a little crazy, but that's okay."

“I may be a bit of a crazy girl, but I'll be the nicest crazy girl you'll ever meet,” you joked.

“I bet so”, you saw the girl blush before the end of the sentence and you held back from smiling.

You looked away from her but you could still feel her green eyes on you.

“So… if you want I can lend you my comics”.

You looked at her and she smiled a cute smile, "would you really lend them to me?", you asked smiling, she nodded.

“Okay, so you lend me your comics and I'll show you how to get out of Jackson whenever you want without getting caught, do we have a deal?”, you held out the hand to her.

“Deal done”, she shook your hand.

"By the way I'm Y/n".

“Ellie”.

“Nice to meet you, Ellie”, you smiled and Ellie felt like she was being born again right there in that simple moment with you, somehow she felt like she would start to really live from there, even if you didn't feel the same way as her, at least not yet.

“It's a pleasure to meet you, Y/n,” she smiled shyly.

You and Ellie were in a tree house that you found on one of the village getaways and you both used it as an escape from the world's problems, when you were there it was like there were only you two in the world and everyone else was just extras.

Ellie could be a little gruff and moody, but she was also smart, witty, and funny, and she was your best friend. What you didn't know was that her feelings for you went beyond friendship, you didn't know that she tried to draw your face on the pages of her journal, that she saw you as an angel that blessed and illuminated her life, you were the only one who brought peace to young Ellie's chaotic and troubled head, you were her angel, her secret and she was in love.

She never felt guilty or wrong for loving another girl, she felt something so beautiful and strong for you that everything else didn't matter, even if sometimes she cried at night, not because she was ashamed of her feelings, but because she knew she would never have you, that you would probably fall in love with a boy who would never love you the way she did, she was crying because you would never be able to return her feelings.

Mary on a Cross started playing and you sang it loud and happy and Ellie was sitting on a mattress practicing on her guitar, you two heard this song together for the first time and loved it, Joel was teaching Ellie to play it on guitar. She tried to feel the chords of the song, but she couldn't concentrate for long when she saw you laughing and singing intensely to the song.

She smiled shyly as she watched you. You got up from where you were sitting reading a book and went to Ellie, you took her hand and pulled her to dance and sing with you. At first she was shy, but your contagious energy caught up with her and she broke free and started dancing with you.

It's been five months since the day you sat next to Ellie and talked to her and then you became everything Ellie loved most about Jackson, with you she felt healed of all the pain the world had caused her and the moments with you, even the simplest ones - like right now - were precious to her and that's how she wanted to live the rest of her life.

The song ended and you threw yourself on the mattress catching your breath, Ellie was on her feet playing with her hands, she was quiet and thoughtful. “Hey are you here, Els?”, you asked sitting up and waving your hand in front of her face. She looked at you and squeezed her hands, “Y/n I…”, she narrowed her eyes and took a deep breath, “… I like you”, she said finally letting out a breath, “that's it, I like you”, she smiled sheepishly. You frowned not quite understanding what she meant, after all you two were girls she couldn't like you beyond being friends, could she?

“I like you too, El,” you said with a chuckle, sort of indifferent to the way she meant to like you. “No, you don't understand… I like you, you know… I really like you a lot”, she said, playing with her hands again, not looking at you. You looked at her a little confused, then you laughed and said getting up from the mattress to get your backpack, "ok very funny, that's so like you, always making jokes".

Ellie felt like crawling into a hole and never coming out, she wanted to run away and run somewhere far away. She didn't know why she had said that, she was out of her mind. At that moment she felt pathetic and stupid, you laughed at her, you didn't even believe what she said, you didn't like her the way she liked you, you never would and it killed her a little bit inside.

“Hm… sorry, you're right, I shouldn't make so many jokes”, she said after a while, laughing nervously, while crying inside.

After that day, Ellie had been strange and distant. She spent most of her time with Joel and whenever you asked her to do something together, she refused saying that she was busy or that she already had plans with Joel.

You missed your best friend and you didn't understand why she was avoiding you, it hurt you and you decided to walk away from her too, that way you wouldn't get hurt every time she refused to spend time with you.

This lasted for about a month, until she asked you out with her and Joel on her birthday and he took you two to an old dinosaur museum and you two were able to be best friends again.

Ellie still felt the same way about you and if you couldn't reciprocate her feelings, she'd keep them secret from her this time, for the rest of her life, if that were possible. Because she loved you so much that she would rather just be your friend than never be able to be around you again, even if she cries from time to time.

2 years before

You tried to hook up with the boys in town, after all, you were seventeen and that's what teenagers your age did, but you just weren't attracted to them, boys were boring and nothing about them piqued your interest. Unlike when you looked at Ellie or any other girl in Jackson, you thought you were going crazy, that there was something wrong with you and it always led to anxiety and panic attacks.

It all got worse when Ellie started dating Cat and that's when you realized she wasn't kidding years ago when she told you she liked you in the treehouse, now you really understood how she felt and you realized you loved her too much more than you ever thought. But now it was too late, you both grew up and feelings matured too. The love that Ellie had for you was a love of one fourteen year old girl and you weren't able to reciprocate her feelings at the time because you didn't like her the same way she liked you. That feeling came to you after a long time and you knew it was Ellie's turn not to be able to reciprocate it, because she got over it and you would too one day. “Some loves will never be ours”, you remembered reading that in a book and now it made sense to you.

You and Ellie were patrolling with a group of people a little older than the two of you and being under their supervision was boring and tedious. You signaled to Ellie and went in the opposite direction from them and she followed right behind you.

“You are crazy, girl”.

“I'm the coolest crazy girl you know,” you joked.

“I was always sure of that, man.”

The two of you rode along while talking and laughing at the silliest things possible and you loved that, it was just too good to laugh with Ellie, except when she told a really silly joke.

“Fuck, is this trail familiar to you?”, Ellie said passing you with the Shimmer. You two arrived at the old treehouse that you and Ellie used to hang out in when you were younger. You tethered the horses and climbed the ladder around the tree stump. “Careful, the wood is rotten”, Ellie warned you.

“Oh fuck that was so long ago”, you said looking around, the things you two took there were still intact, even if dusty. “It's like the universe wanted to preserve this place for us”, Ellie laughed and took the Walkman from her backpack, “to complete this nostalgic moment”.

"Oh brother…”, you laughed.

You felt a good and at the same time painful feeling when marry on a cross started playing, it had been a while since you heard this song, especially with Ellie. She threw her backpack in a corner and lay down on the old mattress, you lay down beside her and you stayed facing each other for a few minutes without saying anything, while listening to your favorite music.

“I like your tattoo”, you said breaking the silence.

"It's better than the bite mark covered in chemical burn."

“It covered the scar well, Cat is very good”, your heart ached when you had to say that.

“Yeah…”, Ellie sighed heavily - “…we're taking a break”.

"Oh…I'm so sorry, Els."

"Okay, it's no big deal."

"What happened?"

"Um…she…um…she thinks I don't like her."

“And do you like her?”, you asked curiously, with a twinge of hope in your chest and you kind of felt guilty for feeling it.

Ellie sighed, “hm… not as much as I should,” she said in a half whisper.

You didn't say anything, you just looked thoughtful for a few minutes.

“Anyway, I like this song,” she said smiling when the song ended.

“I think I like you”, you whispered and immediately closed your eyes regretting saying that.

Ellie propped herself up on her elbows and lifted her head while she was still looking at you, "What did you say?" You got up quickly, “nothing… forget about it”. She quickly got up and grabbed your arm, turning you to face her.

You looked into her eyes with your teary eyes and you could see the sparkle in her eyes. “Did you just say you like me and you think you can get away from me? do you… do you like me?” she asked. “It's not a joke,” you whispered. Ellie smiled and her eyes went from your eyes to your mouth, "it never was, angel" she whispered and closed her eyes sealing her lips on yours.

Ellie was taller than you, so you went up on your tiptoes and wrapped your arms around her neck as she held your waist. The kiss was slow and smooth and you both smiled during it, until Ellie squeezed your waist a little and asked permission to explore your mouth with her tongue and you allowed it. You sighed when you felt her warm tongue on yours and it sent vibrations through her entire body.

You walked with Ellie - while you were still kissing - to a wooden stool and she sat down there, placing you between her parted legs. She slipped her hands from your waist to your hips pulling you a little more, you understood what she wanted and sat on her lap, with your legs one on each side of her.

You broke the kiss to catch your breath and Ellie leaned her forehead against yours, both of you were panting. Ellie felt she could go crazy having you - the girl she's always wanted - panting in her lap, your pretty lips parted, red and swollen from hers.

“I'm going to break up with Cat once and for all, as soon as we get back to town… I swear you're going to be my girlfriend… are you going to be mine, angel?”, she asked kissing your lips.

"I will always be yours, Ellie."

2 years later

As soon as Ellie left, you were still very sleepy and fell asleep again, the pillow she was lying on still had her scent on it and you hugged it.

You woke up a few hours later and stretched, you grimaced in pain as you felt the pain of your body aching from the night before, the night before… you felt a shiver coming from the inside out of your body and you couldn't help it to smile a little.

You got up and saw that Ellie had tidied up the room before she left, everything was in place except for her blue plaid shirt which was lying in the corner on the floor by the door. You picked it up and brought it to your nose to smell it on her shirt and you wondered if Ellie had left it there or if she had left it on purpose, maybe as an excuse to come back to your place later.

You put Ellie's shirt away and prepared a hot bath, you needed to relax and think rationally about the situation you were in. You loved Ellie but that wasn't enough, you also had Dina and she had a place in your heart and it hurt to think of hurting her. But did you love Dina to the point where you were torn between her and Ellie or did you just not want to hurt her because you knew she loved you? You didn't know for sure, you liked her and you wanted to be with her, but you didn't love her like you loved Ellie and maybe you never would, not like that.

The thing was, Ellie had hurt you a lot and you couldn't just ignore it, you knew she was a fucked up, traumatized, possessive and temperamental girl and Ellie would be difficult to deal with in her moments of crisis. But love isn't just about the pretty parts of the other person, right? You loved Ellie with all her flaws and you couldn't let that stop you from fighting for her every day.

You got out of the shower and got dressed, thinking you needed to see if Dina was okay, what would she think if she found out that you had sex with your ex-girlfriend after Ellie broke her face? You looked in the mirror and your body was covered in marks from Ellie's mouth and hands and you bit your bottom lip thinking about her, you loved it when she marked you like that, but you needed to hide it so as not to hurt Dina. So you put on your jeans and a black long-sleeved turtleneck top, it wasn't that cold, but it wasn't a very hot morning either and you could easily use the excuse of having a little low blood pressure.

You arrived at Dina's house and knocked on the door, she didn't take long to answer and smiled broadly when she saw you, as she always did. “Hey kitten”, she pulled you into a warm hug while kissing your cheek. “How are you?”, you asked as you let go of her and looked at the cuts and bruises on her face. “I'm fine, that disturbed girl didn't break anything, nor did she do too much damage…ouch”, Dina complained in pain and grimaced massaging her stomach, where Ellie had also hit. “I'm sorry,” you said with a worried look. "I'm fine, but I can't say it's not sore".

Dina took you to her room and closed the door behind you. “Are you that cold?”, she asked putting her hands on her hips looking at you. “Um… yeah, I woke up with my blood pressure a little low today”, you covered it up, you weren't proud of lying, but it would be better than hurting her feelings. Dina sat next to you on the bed and tucked a lock of your hair behind your ear. “Are you okay?”, you looked at her a little confused, “why?”.

“Because… of Ellie and everything that happened, you know… her suddenly showing up last night…”,

“Dina I'm fine, I swear”, you interrupted her quickly, not wanting to continue with the subject.

“Y/n… I wanted to tell you something, I know it might seem a bit rash, but…”, she bit her lip and smiled and your heart was racing, anxiety consuming you in fear of what she would say next. “…but I've been talking to Cat these days and she knows a farm here on the outskirts of Jackson, I've been to see the place and it's beautiful and safe… I'm moving there and… I'd really like you to come with me… as my girlfriend".

Your world stopped spinning for a moment, you had no reaction to this, was Dina really asking you to be her girlfriend? You wondered if the universe was playing some kind of joke on you. You looked at Dina not knowing what to say, and she was eager for an answer.

“Dina… I… I don't… I don't know…”, you closed your eyes and took a deep breath, Dina noticed your nervousness and tightened her grip on your hands. “Hey, it's okay love, I know I took you by surprise… I planned to propose it to you last night, in a less rushed and more romantic way…”, she giggled nervously, “…you don't have to give me an answer right now, if you prefer some time I'll stay in town as long as it takes, if you decide to go with me, of course… I just don't want you to think you have to, I'm not forcing you to nothing.”

You didn't say anything, many things were going through your head at that moment and you just wanted the voices in your mind to shut up.

“I always dreamed of living on a farm with someone I loved, I think that would be perfect for us now… a little peace and quiet, a place to start over”, she kissed your hand.

Someone she loved... this wasn't happening, this couldn't be happening... you needed to get out of there, you had to spend some time alone to think about everything calmly. Ellie and Dina… you would just go crazy.

A heat started to come from the inside to the outside of your body and you felt suffocated in those hot clothes, you needed air, the anxiety crisis was wanting to appear and you had to get out of there as soon as possible.

"Din… I'm sorry to have to leave like this… I still have to talk to Maria, she wants to talk to me… I'll think about it, I promise." You got up quickly and before you could reach the door, Dina grabbed you and turned you towards her. “I'll be here waiting for you babe”, she smiled and planted a kiss on your soft lips.

You arrived at your house and burst into tears, you were confused, lost, anxious… you didn't know how to calm down to think rationally about everything. Dina wanted you to leave town to live with her on a farm, she had asked you to date her. On the other hand, your Ellie had declared herself to you and made the most beautiful apology you needed to give yourself to her again. So what was stopping you from that? Dina? The fear of getting back together with Ellie and her hurting you again? You couldn't find a clear answer to that and nobody could help you, the choice was all yours.

It was already night when you managed to calm down, you looked for your brother, but he wasn't home. You tried to eat something, but you had no appetite. Then you went back to your room and looked in the mirror, you were wearing short pajamas and you could see Ellie's marks perfectly spread all over your body. Your eyes went to her shirt folded on top of the vanity chair and it crossed your mind to go to her house. You didn't know why, but you knew you had to go there, it was an intuition that invaded you like the night of Jesse's birthday and you felt that you couldn't ignore it.

You arrived at her house and you could hear that she was listening to Marry on a Cross and you smiled as you closed your eyes letting the feeling of nostalgia and a wonderful feeling pass through you.

You took a deep breath and knocked on the door, you heard her mumble something you couldn't make out what it was, but you were sure it was a curse word, you knew her too well to know that she hated to be disturbed in the hours when she could be in peace and alone.

Ellie opened the door and when she saw you, her face went from a frown to one of surprise and you swore you saw a glint deep in her beautiful green eyes. “Y/n!?, why are you here?”. You bit the inside of your cheek, “well I just… you forgot your shirt, I already have your sweatshirt, I thought I should at least return yours…”

Ellie laughed interrupting you, “get in here, angel”, she said making room for you to enter. You walked in and looked around, her house was all messed up, bed unmade, there were books and other things thrown on the floor, the coffee table and shelf thrown on the floor, the only thing that was in perfect condition were the pictures and the drawings she had of you.

“Did an earthquake come through here?” you asked. “That was a nice excuse to come here”, Ellie said ignoring what you said, you turned to face her and she was a few meters away from you. “You left this in my room, I also wondered if it was on purpose”, you held her shirt out to her and she tugged it hard, pulling you along. You rested your hands on Ellie's shoulders and she held your waist, you shuddered when you felt that she slipped her hands under your tshirt, squeezing your soft skin.

“Maybe we're both looking for ways to see each other, angel”, she whispered looking at your lips. You closed the space between you two by kissing her deeply, your tongues dancing together in perfect rhythm.

“Hate to break the mood, but I was on my way to the bathroom when you knocked on the door,” Ellie said as she parted her lips from yours. “Fuck, pee”, you said laughing making Ellie laugh too. "I'll be right back babe" she said pulling your lower lip between her teeth making you sigh.

As soon as she entered the bathroom, you hung her shirt in the closet, and straightened some things that were messy. You bent down to pick up a book from the floor when you saw a green jacket that Ellie wore two days before Joel's death, it was lying in a corner on the floor by the window. You placed the book on top of her bed and picked up her jacket from the floor to put it away. As soon as you lifted the jacket a red velvet box fell out of the inside pocket, you bent down, picked up the box and opened it.

Your heart raced and you felt your breath hitch when you saw a silver engagement ring with a blue topaz glittering before your eyes…

Another thing you weren't expecting, your ex girlfriend entering your house while you weren't there and waiting for you in your room. Again you couldn't react to that, because in your chaotic head you would never speak to Ellie again.

“I'm sorry to show up like this…”, Ellie said in a calm and low voice, very different from what you had seen a few minutes ago… if you hadn't witnessed the scene, you wouldn't believe that this Ellie right in front of you at that moment, was the same Ellie who assaulted Dina half an hour ago. “…it's just…I just want to apologize to you”, she said while playing with her hands.

Someone could have just drugged your drink tonight, was Ellie really apologizing to you? You started to get anxious, you were shaky and you prayed you wouldn't pass out right then and there. You wouldn't be able to say anything, so you listened to everything Ellie had to say in silence.

Ellie took a deep breath, “ok…”, she took a step forward and picked up a picture of the two of you that was on top of your dressing table and looked at it for a few seconds before putting it back in place. “Okay…”, she finally looked back at you as she spoke firmly, conveying sincerity and assurance, “I didn't plan on this, being here tonight… I didn't plan on going to talk to you at Jesse's party either… I really had thought about talk to you, but I never thought I would actually do it, at least not like this.”

“But then I saw you and you were with her, when it should have been me… and it would have been me if I hadn't been such a jerk to you… I did you wrong and I'm sorry… I'm sorry I didn't appreciate you when I should have, I'm sorry for making you feel unloved, I'm sorry I made you think you weren't important to me, I'm sorry I let you down, I'm sorry for all the pain I caused you... I'm sorry I didn't show you how much you means to me, sorry for giving up... I'm sorry for making it seem like I didn't love you anymore, when I loved you every day, even in the depths of my pain I loved you, just as I loved you during my rage and panic attacks, among all the horrible feelings that I feel, my love for you is the most beautiful and pure feeling I feel and that's what gave me strength to continue, that kept me alive... I lost myself when I lost Joel, but I didn't lose my love for you... I just didn’t know how to show it anymore and don’t think that it didn’t kill me either…”

“Ellie…”, you were teary eyed and your heartbeat was exploding in your chest.

You were paralyzed, you were hurt, confusion, anxiety, happiness, and your heart still ached… there was such a mix of emotions going on inside you that it was hard to keep your concentration, you wanted to say so many things… you wanted to run up to Ellie and kiss her but also wanted to yell at her or just sit down and cry but you could only stay where you were with a few tears streaming down your face.

Ellie approached you standing face to face with you. She was a little taller than you and you looked up at her. You looked so beautiful with your red lips and teary eyes, Ellie wanted to kiss you. She put her hands on your face and her thumbs got wet with your tears. You closed your eyes at the feel of her touch on your skin again and opened them the second she took her hands away.

Her eyes roamed over your picture board of the two of you to her sweatshirt neatly folded over the armchair in the corner. She looked at you again, this time her eyes went from your eyes to your lips, "is it too late?", she whispered still looking at your lips.

You let out a long sigh, “Ellie… I don't really know, you're a totally different person to me now… in my head I would go back to you so easily, but here and now it seems to be so difficult, it's not that simple… I I know we all make mistakes and I forgive you, I just need some time to think about it.”

She nodded her head and said in a whisper, "yeah... you and Dina..."

“She's not my girlfriend,” you were quick to say, “and I'm not in love with her,” you swore you could see relief in Ellie's eyes and a twinge of hope, “I wasn't when you asked me and still am not…but I can't deny that I have feelings for her… and I can't leave her, not like this and that's one of the reasons that complicates the whole thing”.

Ellie didn't say anything for a few seconds, she had her head down, her hands on her hips. “Ellie?”, she took a deep breath and looked at you. You weren't sure, but it looked like she struggled not to cry.

"I'm leaving Jackson, Y/n." She said it so firmly, that you felt your world collapsing right there, it was as if someone had stuck a knife in your already wounded heart.

“What?” you said in a shaky voice, more tears streaming from your eyes. “I need to finish what I started…”

“Oh God”, you said running a hand over your face, how could you ever trust Ellie again? Give her your heart again if she only cared about revenge? And it hurt you too much to see that she was destroying herself because of it.
