pairing: Jacob Black x reader
summary: Jacob Black is an asshole, you knew that but you didnât realise he would be so damn stubborn. Leaving you all alone in the middle of the woods? Real smooth.
"Who's there?" you call out into the darkening forest, your voice laced with worry. You try to make out the source of the strange sound you just heard. Something was moving in the trees, but you couldn't see shit. Not only because of the dark. These dumb tears clouding your vision didnât help either. "Fucking idiot, leaving me here all alone."
There was this uneasy feeling in your gut screaming at you to get the hell out of there. You were smart enough to listen to it. Picking up your pace, you tried to climb down the mountain faster; you've taken this route at least a million times before. You knew it by heart. You used to come up here with Jacob all the time. Yeah, used to-
Jacob. Jacob. The name once burnt into your soul and ever so present in your mind was now followed by waves of pain and sorrow. When he reached out to you after months of no contact, your heart leapt in your chest. You thought you'd finally get an answer, an explanation for his sudden disappearance. He'd tell you that everything is fine, that he is sorry, and that he missed you too. It was so unlike him to cut you out of his lifeâno call or text, just silence. You've spent everyday together since you were 5, for God's sake.
When you arrived at your usual hangout spot, you were too stunned to even speak. There he was, the boy who you knew better than you knew yourself, yet this person standing before you was a complete stranger. "Damn, look at you," you laughed halfheartedly while looking him up and down. "You look like you were kidnapped by a gang of deadlifters. Is that why you've been gone?"
"Y/nâ" there wasn't even a hint of a smile on his face. That made you stop in your tracks.
"Jake, what's wrong? Why did you ditch me like that? I've been calling; you never pick up. Did something happen? Did I do something wrong?" The questions poured out of you all at once, everything you've been dying to ask.
He was silent for a few moments, as if gathering his thoughts. "I think it would be best if we didn't see each other anymore" is what finally rolled down from his tongue. You felt your hands trembling.
"It's been three months, Jacob. Three months of nothing. Not a word. Not a text. Nothing. And this is what comes out of your mouth? No, I won't accept it. Where the hell have you been." At this point you weren't asking; you were demanding an answer.
"I've been busy," he said, avoiding your eyes.
"Busy? Seriously? That's all you've got? You disappear on your best friend, and all I get is "busy"?"
"Things changed. I changed." he said with a clenched jaw.
"I can see that; you don't even look like the same person anymore." You scoff, but you have to look away to fight back tears.
"We used to tell each other everything," you whisper. "Why did you shut me out all of a sudden?"
"Why? I deserve a good explanation at least!"
"You don't understand. You can't understand." His voice trembled ever so slightly, which made you take a hesitant step towards him.
"Then make me understand! I'm standing here, begging for somethingâanythingâto explain why my best friend turned into a stranger overnight."
He raised his eyes, finally looking into your pleading ones. "Because it's not safe for you to be around me anymore."
You stared at him dumbfounded. "What kind of angsty fuckass answer is that? I'm not safe around you anymore? What?" You started pacing around, fingers gripping the roots of your hair.
"Jakeâ" you stop in your tracks, taking a deep breath in, "have you been doing drugs?" You finish the sentence in a hushed voice.
Jacob's eyes fly wide. He opens his mouth just to close it again, looking almost offended. "What? No! I haven't been doing drugs! Why would you say that?!"
"Well, it's the most logical explanation I can come up with! Unless you want to give me another one."
"I can't tell you. I won't drag you into this. You deserve better."
"Oh well, that's considerate," you hissed angrily through your teeth. "But you don't get to make that decision for me."
"I do. I can't watch you get hurt because of me. I care about you too much to do that."
"Well, you already hurt me, Jake. You are hurting me right now, so just pleaseâtalk to me." You reach your hand out to him, but he takes a step back.
He turns around to leave, and you let out one last desperate "please."
He flinches as if he could hear your heart breaking, and for a moment you think he might turn around, but he just keeps walking.
There's nothing after that. Just silence. He leaves. He doesn't turn around. There was never a silent moment between you two, until now. The last three months you felt terribly lonely, but it's never been quieterâ lonelier than now.
Another sudden noise snaps you out of your thoughts. It came from behind you, but you are too frightened to look at what it was. You don't need to look. Even if it was just a freaking bird, you didn't care. You are getting out of here.
You take a run for it, sprinting with all the energy you have left after bawling your eyes out in the woods for hours. You dodge trees and rocks on the ground with learnt expertise. It isn't the first time you've raced down the mountain. You used to race with Jacob, Embry, and Quil. Well, at least during the day. But it was increasingly harder for you to see. The sun has already set, and you have about 10 minutes until it goes completely dark.
Fuck, you wish you'd listened to your dad more. He and Charlie warned you not to go to the woods alone. There were multiple deaths and disappearances reported over the last year. You really hoped you weren't about to be one of them.
You could still hear something moving behind you, but you weren't so sure anymore. Your breathing was ragged, and your steps were becoming sloppier. You couldn't continue like this anymore. You felt exhausted. You avoided a steep ditch on your right, being careful not to slip. Then you stopped.
Choking on your own shallow breaths, you squint your eyes to look around. You couldn't see anything; it was way too dark already. You didn't hear anything suspicious either, though, so you decided to rest for a bit.
You closed your eyes, trying to calm yourself down just a little bit. The dark was starting to freak you out, not to mention your dad was about to be really worried too. It was about another half an hour walk down to your car. If you hurry.
You didn't even have time to take another step when you heard it. Something was running very, very fast, and it was running your way. You straightened up, bracing yourself to meet whatever it is face-to-face.
A shadow rushed past you. You didn't have time to turn your head and see what it was because you saw something else. Something much, much bigger and scarier. A giant beast speeding right at you. You tried to back away, get out of its path, but there wasn't enough time. All you managed was one tiny step back. The beast, twice your size, sped past you, throwing you to the side with so much force it knocked your breath out.
Next thing you know, you were taking a free dive down the steep ditch you managed to avoid 5 minutes ago. You couldn't help but let out a frightened shriek. You hit the ground with a heavy thud, but to your horror, the fall wasn't over yet. Your body managed to hit every obstacle in its way until you finally hit the ground at the bottom.
You were in so much pain you thought you were about to die. Maybe you were. You couldn't breathe. The air just didn't want to enter your lungs no matter how hard you tried. You let out a helpless whimper.
You just needed a littleâjust a little... air. Air. In. Out. In and out. Yes, that's right. Breathe. Breathe. "Y/n, breathe."
The voice was calming despite the panicked tone. It calmed your racing heart, and for the first time in what felt like hours, you breathed in, and the rush of oxygen almost made you choke again.
"Y/n, open your eyes." The voice spoke again, in a lower tone but still very distressed.
"Open your eyes, come on." And you did. Even in the dark you could make out the very familiar facial features. Your eyes met and you felt a sudden tug at your heart, as if it was about to leap out of your chest. He must have felt it too, you heard him gasp quietly.
"Jake," you sobbed. You suddenly felt a weight fall off your chest. He was here. Everything was fine.
He was here, you didnât care about anything else. The anger and sadness from before vanished completely. The way he was looking at you felt so intense you had to close your eyes again. He was breathing unevenly and his body was slightly shivering. You never felt more confused in your entire life.
âYou have to tell me what hurts." He was holding you close, one hand caressing your cheek. You faintly saw the panic in his eyes, which made your heart clench in a way you had never felt before. You didn't want him to worry, not because of you; to hell with the past few months.
You tried to think, what hurt? Your whole body felt like it was on fire. There was a sharp pain in your leg that made you think you might throw up. "My leg," you said quietly, biting back another sob. You didn't realise you were crying.
"It's going to be okay." Jacob said, running his thumb over your cheek. Probably to wipe the tears off. It felt like he was also reassuring himself. "Anything else?"
"Uh, my chest andâand my head." you choked out. God, everything hurts. Your mind raced back to the beast that caused all this.
Your eyes flew open. "Jake," you struggled trying to sit up; you needed to tell him about the beast.
"Hey, hey, hey. Relax, you need to lie down. What's wrong?" He protested and tried to push you back down. You didn't have the strength to fight him.
"Jake, there was a beaâa bear orâor a wolf. A really, really big one. We need toâ." Your words probably didn't make sense to him. His grip on you tightened.
"Don't worry about it. You're safe with me." He was right; there wasn't a safer place for you than by his side. The irony of him saying otherwise just a few hours ago made you chuckle.
Jacob scoffed, a light smile dancing on his lips. "What are you laughing about, weirdo?"
"Ah, it's nothing." You suddenly felt the tension between you two disappear. It felt like a huge weight was lifted off your shoulders. You leaned into him, suddenly feeling tired. "I missed your smile," you mumbled.
"I missed your smile too," he hummed.
"Jacob! It's safe; we chased her off!" A voice called out from the top of the ditch.
"Is she okay? Is it bad? God, I feel so bad!" another voice shouted.
"Don't you even breathe near me right now, Embry! I'm going to fucking gut you for this!" Jacob yelled back. The sudden rage in his voice startles you a little. You felt yourself being lifted off of the ground. Every inch of you was aching. You had no idea what was happening. But couldn't care less because you were in Jacob's arms. Protected.
"Look, man, I didn't see her standing there, honest!"
"Don't even bother, Embry; you almost killed his imprint. If I were you, I'd be running with my tail between my legs."
"He's right; it's best if you go for now. It's a miracle Jake hasn't sunk his teeth in you yet."
What the hell were they even talking about right now?
You forced your eyes to open again just in time to see one of the silhouettes disappear. You let out a little whimper when, in its place, a giant wolf appeared. The same beast from before.
Jacob must have felt your distress because he changed his position so you'd no longer see the cause of your current condition. "It's okay, don't be scared. I'll explain everything later, okay?" he promised in a reassuring voice. His arms felt warm and safe. You believed him.
"But donât think Iâll forgive you so easily," you whispered weakly. The exhaustion was starting to overcome you.
"I didnât think that for a second."
"Don't you dare leave me again."
You were almost asleep when you felt a soft peck on your forehead. "I'll never leave you again. Promise."
