GHP Tips for Pepe and the Future GHPer
Just wanted to leave this very valuable document here. (the numbered tips are the more important ones but all tips are important)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GDoPKv-FPFBN-5qTrFTznuZHr_wiE2m9EVeQK3blZ9s/edit?usp=sharing is the original document if you want a more readable version courtesy of Hirsh, Chinye, and me.
1. http://ghpdays.tumblr.com/ <- check for pictures and more references
- Oh my gosh, Jessie, you made this?! Itâs beautiful! - Chinye
- Yeah and we are in it too! we so special and famous!- hirsh
2. Bring Umbrellas<- more than one is good, big and small, black and purple, round and triangle, good stuff (LOL HIRSH HAD A HUGE UMBRELLA <3)
3. Stay out of your dorm, unless sleep time.
4. Sleep when time to sleep and wake up early to go to fitness activities!! Â (you get nice beads too) Use this time to make friends--workout buddies!
- i made a really good friend from running with him every morning :âD - jessie
- JACKSON--Hirsh
- YESS <3- jessie
Try insanity! lots of fun
- eww i never tried it- jessie
- which makes Jessie=ew--haha(hiragana haha)(akaHirsh)
- running is good too, maybe try mixing it up, there was also another thing that i forgot name of, but its like a little bit of everything like running, push ups, etc.--Hirsh
bring a water bottle!! and you might want to buy the gallon water jugs too.
- or do what I did and bring a huge pack of water bottles--Hirsh
There is also gym like thing to workout, but I never found location so never bothered trying it haha (oh yeah you could work out in the afternoons)
there is point system with each hall, and the hall with the most points is awarded the Golden Shoe every week during the dance; getting people to go to fitness is a good way to get points, including RA (LULZ my hall never cared about points- jessie) <- make good friends with him, he is going to be really cool person, and all other RAâs
----seminars/concerts-----
5. Go to every seminar, so it is recommended that you clone yourself prior to going
go to all seminars that look interesting, wacky, fun, useful, etc.
6. Go to ALL concerts and formal events--totally worth it and fun
- ALL OF THEM. DONT SKIP ANY- jessie
lots of dancing ones like learning to do Salsa
- Jessie loved this one, ask her about it.- Hirsh
- i danced with hirshhh :D- Jessie
- oh but i tried running away at first lulz--Jessie
- she literally was running around and I had to catch herâŚ--Hirsh
and waltz and stuff--those are worth going too, but beware a lot of the good events need tickets, so make sure to get them well in advance otherwise you will miss out like we did for Waltz, RA talent show, etc.
-------THE FOOD STUFFS. important information------
7. bring some of your own food and bring ramen. i guess you can make friends by sharing foods :3
8. after you work out, the showers will be crowded, but hurry and run down to Palms dining center for breakfast. DONT SKIP BREAKFAST. BAD PEPE.
After fitness stuff sprint back and make sure to be first for showers before people wake up, or if you hall wakes up early and showers around that time, leave fitness early so you can be first, get shower done and be early for breakfast---this is key if you want milk so that you can grow big and strong and have strong bones and all that good stuff (did not know about milk until like second week and I drink a lot of milk...so that was bad)
9. Make friends with the art and music majors. that way you can ask them to take your dirty trays so you dont have to stand in the long line after breakfast and be late to class. (they have class 15 min later than everyone else, thats why)
try something new at Palms everyday. no fun eating burgers every meal. TRY THEIR VEGGIE/ black bean burger.
- apparently its good (I missed out on this despite being vegetarianâŚ)--Hirsh
Their desserts are great. dont skip. huee. especially their froyo.
- my favorite was the peach kind- jessie.
- I lived on salads...so dessert was lifesaving for me haha and they were generally amazing...oh and I had froyo there only once on the last night i think...its worth getting more than once--Hirsh
- their blondie bars are the best. <- white brownies. thats what it is- Jessie
- I second this--Hirsh
shall we tell him about the harry potter dinner?- jessie
sure why not.- hirsh
but it was supposed to be a surprise- jessie
okay how about this, we tell him to bring harry potter costume just in case haha- hirsh
okay bring a harry potter costume grayson- jessie
what is purpose of putting our names on our comments- hirsh (aka Hiragana Haha)
just so he doesnt get confused. okay moving on- jessie
10. pick a new table to sit at every breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (you donât have to sit with different people every time, but just a different table :D)
- at least try to sit with new people every meal for the first week. after the first week, people stop trying to be nice and every settles down with a group of people basically--Jessie
- that is not completely true, I did not stop being nice haha-Hirsh
THE FRIED MUSHROOMS. lulz. were the best. (they forced me to eat it, but i guess they were okay--Hirsh) and cereal. its okay to eat it for dinner. and thereâs a starbucks and a chickfila and stuff on the campus too, you just have to pay for it
11. when you put money on your card thing, do not put too much; put like $10 at a time at most, you do not get money back that is left over in the end, so unless you want to have random shopping spree in the end or pay for everyoneâs laundry before leaving...haha you know what to do
- I do not know how to do this--that should be a big tip for you: make sure you know how to do it, if not, just ask someone like i did. haha, Jessie probably knows so if you need help go call her she will be in Taiwan waiting for your laundry calls- Hirsh
- i just put $5 on my GHP card thingy, and that worked out fine. i used it all- Jessie
- yeah same for me--Hirsh
- i think its $1 per washing load, and 50 cents per drying load- Jessie
12. no matter what other ghpers say, you should only need to dry your clothes in one cycle. just set the temperature to the highest possible.
- I second this too, I think I sometimes took it out early despite it being a full load and it was still dry haha- Hirsh
13. check the clock when you do the laundry and put in your load.
- I didnt get my clothes out fast enough, and a bunch of people needed to use it, so they just took out my clothes and put it on a random table- Jessie
- that is really mean, and yeah beware of those mean people who  that do that...that could be really scary--Hirsh
Me and Mike and Aditya and some others usually put laundry, check time and then went to play ping pong in lobby haha lots of fun and fun use of waiting time; or play four square or something
oh cards are lots of fun too, ask Jessie she will say same
oh yeah and when you look in the machine and do not see anything, that is normal since the machine is spinning so fast that clothes get stuck to side and you do not see it
- PHYSICS. Pepe you are Physics major too that so that works- Hirsh
- by the way I know this is stupid comment haha that was the first time I looked into machine like that so I got scared I lost all of my clothes somehow hahahaha--Hirshey
14. the washing room is veryvery crowded, so sometimes you can ask a person that is currently taking out their clothes if they can wait for you to reach the black box before they shut the door
or you can do your laundry on sunday mornings. no one does them then.
or during the ghp dances lulz <-hahahaha
or random weekday early in morning or late night before sleeping
- Thursday night :D That was my laundry night. But it was more fun doing it with my buddies in Langdale on Sunday morning. -Chinye
- heck yeah chinye. sunday mornings :D- Jessie
- Laundry room is also very warm
- do laundry with at least one friend. its very scary doing it by yourself
15. yeah learn how to play ERS and BS and go fish and ..the best game: 24!
- OH YEAH thats what my math project was about- jessie
- also President, I think you taught me this one Jessie ,and this other game..uh that was kinda like president that ryan chen taught us--Jessie which was that?--Hirsh
- the one that reverses order and makes 3 the highest card instead of the lowest whenever a jack is placed--Jessie
- I do not remember that...maybe I did not play that one with you guys :( --Hirsh
- also Pepe you will see him in your math class next year I think because he is coming to GSMST to take whatever math thing you guys are doing, so that will be fun for you guys!- Hirsh
- Â WHOA REALLY WHAT RYAN CHEN WHAT <3- jessie
- YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I spoke with him a while back, maybe January
*To play 24, take 4 random cards and make 24 with them using any 4 of the basic operations like + - * / but remember order of operations!
- you can make it more complicated by choosing large primes and adding cards accordingly- Hirsh
- ^ for the super nerds--Jessie
- like Jessie and me--Hirsh
- I thought we had something like this above...whatever we can do it again--Hirsh
16. have fun, go to the horse thing, oh i think it was called ride the pony or something, I heard it was funn but never go to got any of them (YES THAT WAS FUN AND CRAZY--Jessie)
17. Also caberet (not sure how to spell it, but it is the foreign language show that is AMAZING, it made me wish I was a foreign language major...it was hilarious and fun in a bunch of languages, I think Jessie talked about this above or something, but it is well worth mentinoing them twice)
18. Go to the PRISM concerts...they are the best...like literally the biggest and coolest concerts they have
- I think there were two and required tickets...so make sure you get those well in advance too!
* some info about some seminars below
there were some foreign language and culture seminars like Japanese...I went to one and got a bit bored, but I do not know there could have been more better stuff with this since it went from Jap 1-4
- i think so yeah--Hirsh
GHP stories/secrets thing--we shared stories that happened to us at GHP that week and whatever is said in that room stays ONLY with the people in that room...lots of fun...go to all of them--Hirsh
oh there was one about bubble wrap that was cool...I think all they did was pop it...-Hirsh
also another about cooking in college and tips..that is useful--Hirsh
oh also a bunch of college seminars and information stuff which might be useful...like to meet some of the admissions people and give them a good impression already (especially by being a GHP person) but a lot of them were the usual boring stuff you get at school, so if you really want to go, just go the schools you are interested and no mas (lo siento para no poner un acento)--Hirsh
oh and there is a how to be sassy seminar...that is well worth going to hahaha-You can tell who this is by now
- darn it i missed this one- jess
i really wanted to do finger knitting- jessie
and all the movie seminars were good-jess
the themes of these dances should be released early on, so I guess plan based on those
20. oh and lots of formal stuff for the concerts and stuff we mentioned above
I feel tired, but I do not want to go since you wonât be here for two months :â( I am going to miss you. - Hirsh
awhs iâll miss you tooo- Jessie
i have to go too since im tired.- Hirsh
its okay we can finish later- Jessie
no we canât Grayson goes in June and you wonât have internet.- Hirsh
iâll get internettts. within like two weeks. and if i never come back, FINISH THIS NOBLE WORK. oh yeah i also posted a link to my ghp journal up there, which covers a lot of things--jessie
oh okay --Hirsh
21. watch mean girls if they show it
22. if they show disney movies, GO WATCH. the sing a long parts are so funny
they have some good ones too like there was one what was an old comedy, I htink black and white and  about someone who acted in the footsteps of Sherlock holmes or something, but yeah lots of fun, go if you have time
DO NOT GO TO ANY RANDOM LEAGUE THING, that is a big waste of time and I was forced to go (even though I do not play  it and I hate it )because everyone else wanted to go :(--Hirsh
- IT WAS GREAT <3 - jessie
- I just looked through your diary thing above that was cool! when did you have the time to make that?  and you are goneâŚ
- i made it when i came back from ghp, and during winter break too LOL- jess
***** Watching any movie at GHP is 10x better because the other students sort of create a real-life laugh track, and things that you wouldnât have noticed initially become funny
23. You can bring your ownâŚ.but not really worth it...
- I brought the oldest one I had which barely functions just in case I wanted to pull up presentation from flashdrive to practice on day of presentation (procrastination still exists haha)- Hirsh
Also in the math major building there are labs that you can use after 4 or 4:30pm or something or whenever minor classes ended so you have computer access
also the Valdosta Library is open most of the time so you can go there to use computers
24. UNLIMITED PRINTING FOR FREE--remember this
-----Good place for resources-----
25. Supposedly there exists a âGHPâ book in that library...we had spent hours (I think Jessie mentioned this already above) but never found it, if you do find it then can you sign our names in it for us haha
26. Every Monday or some weekday (find out which) there is a free books shelf which you will pass on your way to the computers
* when you enter valdosta library take left and then a right...walk walk walk walk walk and presto you see a tall shelf labelled free books
GET THERE EARLY WHEN THEY RESTOCK AND GET SOME COOL BOOKS FOR FREEE, like reference books, story books, etc. there is some good stuff that i missed out on...bring me a souvenir!- Hirsh
- Oops, didnât realize someone already said it xD - Chinye
THE LIBRARY HAS A âFREE BOOKâ BOOK SHELF WHERE YOU CAN JUST TAKE A BOOK AND KEEP IT FOREVER. Go in the morning, because the good books are gone by the afternoon. -Chinye
27. Do not waste your time anywhere there is a computer!
spend like 15 min max for social stuff like facebook and checking email, chatting, etc. Do not be addicted like someone I know was *cough cough Jessie*
- HUE i stayed on the computer for hours...LOL- jess
- ...oh and Mike did too he plays lots of games...and Tony Huang went crazy with practicing for SAT/ACT...but he actually pulled off near perfect scores with all of his intense practice at GHP...so that was not a waste
Also the computer place in the math building was called meth lab for some reason...i guess it sounds like math labâŚ
- DINGDINGDING that is correct- Â jess
-----Science Major Stuff (courtesy of me, Chinye :D)----
You may be tempted to lord your physics-ness over all of the other kids, but donât, because the rest of them are pretty cool, too
28. Pity the chemistry kids xD
- AHAHAHAHA poor chemistry kids...titrations all month long and nothing else XD- jess
29. Take advantage of Science Saturdays as social events! Donât get too competitive. But be competitive xD
Start working on your scavenger hunt as soon as they tell you about it xD You want it to be cool
- Was the scavenger hunt for everyone not in the major or for others in the major, because I never got to do it--Hirsh
- awhs it sounds like cool. tell us more about it chinye- jess
Donât feel weird if you donât exactly fit in super well during the first week or so (like me). The small-ish class sizes let people get pretty close-knit by the end. Or idk⌠maybe youâll be like Sam and be an instant hot-shot and find your new best friend on the first day xD
- i believe in pepe. he and zinga are both super cool :â)- jess
30. PLEASE have mercy on the children collecting data for their studies and help them! They will return the favor! And some of the biology studies involved tasty food, and coloring xD
- I REMEMEBER EATING OREOS AND COLORING IN FRONT OF THE VALDOSTA LIBRARY AT LIKE 9PM!!!!! THAT WAS FUN! :) --Hirsh
- Oh yeah Chinyeâs was kind of fun too with the survey...I took my time with that survey and still have not got the scored results yet :( when will I receive them CHinye?!!!?--Hirsh
- hirsh why did i miss the oreos thing D: yeah i did chinyeâs which was good because i got to eat food :D - jess
-----Minors (a little help, guys?)---
Hirsh said to avoid the agi sci minor at all costs.- chinye
I thought it was boring...and a waste of time...but fields trips were alright: I got to try a bunch of free chocolate, make salsa, grow plants,etc.--Hirsh
- dude that sounds like cool^. mine was piano minor, where you play piano for 2 hours everyday and thats it LOL- jessie
You canât minor in your major xD No more science for you, sorry
Pepe probably would not want to anyway, I heard it encompasses the big three sciences, but it is very broad and stuff...so he would get bored and stuff--Hirsh
31. IMPORTANT: Choose something that youâve have little experience in or have never done before and may never do again. Or your secret hobby, like Mitesh xDDD (he did dance)
oh yeah and if you do dance or perform or something, I EXPECT TO SEE THIS ON VIDEO OR SOMETHING SO YOU BETTER HAVE PEOPLE FILMING AND STUFF, okay cool thanks!--Hirsh
32. Minors in high demand (pretty cool, but possibly hard to get): Counseling and Fitness
- Also in high demand was exec. management (I did not get this and forgot to put another as back up since I did not think anyone would want this...DO NO MAKE THIS SAME MISTAKE OR ELSE YOU WILL GET AG SCI WHICH IS NOT WORTH IT (Unless you want it, then thatâs cool))--Hirsh
If you choose math, you can choose a class called Cryptography and if you meet Henry, he is GT grad student who knows a lot about this and other computer related stuff...so make sure to talk to him...oh and any other math person there; actually do not choose math, do as stated above and choose something creative, not experienced in or secret talent--Hirsh
Minors I would have loved to do: Spanish, or a language in general (you get to be in a super fun, kind of PG-13 cabaret show), dance (also performs), Soc Studs (interesting history and debating :D)- Chinye
- I second this (at least for language and performing arts)...if there is anything I could change it would be major or minor into a language or performing arts type of thing (but I am not talented enough in either to have been able to do so)--HIrsh
Jessie can talk about the music minor⌠itâs mostly just sitting around and practicing, unless you do jazz or guitar--Chinye
- he plays guitar, so good for Grayson...he can perform on stage!!!--Hirsh
- yeah piano minor^read above for reference. and i think the guitar class is really cool, because those kids wrote their own songs and sang and stuffs-jess
- :DDD That would be awesome!!!-Chinye
- yeah I told him above, if he does end up performing he has to get someone to film for us so we can see it!--Hirsh
My minor was Comm Arts. The teachers were FANTASTIC (I love love love Stephanie), but beware of minors that rotate from week to week, because itâs a little tougher to make friends. But idk, like I said, you may be the type that has no problem with that xD- Chinye
- Comm Arts courses include: World Mythology, classes on various plays, Comedy (mostly stand-up), playwriting, Perfectionism (brilliant class that I would recommend for any gifted kid or teen in general), Fairytales, etc. Varies from year to year.- Chinye
- Jobie was one of them, so of course it was amazing--Hirsh
- heâs not going to be there this year. and as a teacher for us gsmst seniors, heâs not as cool as he seemed at ghp. you can tell him i said that LOL.- Jess
-----End-of-camp showcases----
33. Prism is a must (already mentioned above)
For your showcases you can have shifts with your project partner so one will hold down your presentation station while you check out your fellow science kidsâ stuff. Once again, theyâll return the favor.
- Yeah do this so you do not get too bored--
- Everyone is super into whatever theyâre doing, so it makes it cooler than you may expect. Check out presentations for things you didnât think youâd be interested in. I think the Soc Studs were surprisingly varied and amazing.- chinye
34. THE DRAMA KIDS. OH MY GOSH. JUST WATCH IT. And dance. Dance too.
- DONâT MISS ANY OF THESE...they are pretty good
- oh yeah and show off your dance moves at dances...I wish you taught me some moves earlier hahaha
- the drama kids⌠i second that -jess
35. JAZZ :D Never thought I would fangirl over musicians my own age. Watch the jazz performances. And chorus. Jazz and chorus were my favorite musical performances.
- What does it mean to be a fangirl? and remember the indian song they had the chorus do...that was awesome!!!-hirsh
- LOL THE JAZZ MAJORS <3 they were sooooooo good. i think they were almost like celebrities around the campus. at least the bassist and the saxophonist were- jess
- Yeah, Balleilakka :D And âfangirlingâ is freaking out whenever a performer comes on stage and trying to be their friend and raving about them to your other friends xD Itâs a bit embarrassing >.<- Chinye
- aww man, so I guess Grayson canât do this since he is a guy...no worries Grayson you can still be fanboying all you want(for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so=fanboys!...Mrs.Covin and other grammar teachers would be proud); do I have the right idea Chinye?!--Hirsh
36. Donât fall asleep during shows like Hirsh- Chinye
- No there is a difference, I woke up at the right times...like literally when the best parts came I was awake (hmm I wonder how I know this without being awake...haha), this was usually around the second half or so...plus I was not fully asleep I can recall random things while I was in my half sleep phase hah- Hirsh
- hue. i slept during like every show. GUILTY :D Â but i always clapped extra loud to make up for it- jess
Just drink Coke at dinner or something to stay awake xD Thatâs what I did- Chinye
- you say this now...thanks a lot Chinye- Hirsh
- Sorry!- Chinye
- i drank coke during breakfast to stay awake during math majors, which was basically like 4 hours of number theory- jessie
- I rarely drank soda at GHP, it was either some juice or water from water bottle, I hated the flavored water there- Hirsh
- i liked it, i thought it was fancy- jess
- The soda machines had plain water faucets in them xD- Chinye
- once again...you say this now!?!?!?!- Hirsh
- Figured it out a couple days into it xDDD Sorry again!
come on Chinye after all those walks and times we spent together looking for people and considering how we were doing as a GHPer...this is what I get- Hirsh
- our Chinese friends always run from us- hirsh
WHAT i never ran D:< - jess
The best part is finding out what everyoneâs major is xD Big surprise!
Literally everyone asks hi what is your name, what is your major...then awkward silence...so what I do is ask more about them like do you play any instruments what school they went too anything cool they do for hobby, etc. makes it a lot more fun since you meet people and show interest which means instant friends (maybe) haha--Hirsh
37. its super cold inside the buildings, where you will be most of the time, so i recommend bringing a jacket so you can take it off or put it on when necessary- jess
- colored shorts too. get some .they are so preppy and good looking :â)
Comments and Concerns...more importantly the concerns, but comments are cool too--Hirsh
