𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐄

               DAPHNE HADN’T BEEN in Cair Paravel for some time. First, the winter had come, and with the century-long winter still within memory –– some seasons had passed, but the woods were still regrowing; the forest was now filled –– filled –– with young trees running around –– she had wanted to stay with the forest. Time had gotten away from her, as it tended to do; Daphne wasn’t made with clocks in mind. Stepping back into the court was like coming back to a corner of the woods she rarely went to: it was familiar, but only just. The VOICE OF THE FOREST padded up the stairs with bare feet, verdant, budding vines circling her ankles and disappearing under an old-style Narnian skirt, and she smiled, eyes glancing around. 

She stepped into the courtyard, watching those in the castle milling around for a moment, reorienting herself with the speed of a place that was not like her forest in so many ways. She saw a flash of a skirt in her periphery and turned, seeing a much taller version of a young queen she had once known. Daphne grinned, waiting until Susan was closer so she could measure the young –– but not as young as she once was –– queen against Daphne’s own height. 

“Who is this queen I see? Surely not our Susan, who never was this tall before.” She grinned, reaching her hands out for the queen to hold. “My blossom, soon you’ll be higher than the trees.”

𝐒𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐍   𝐎𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐍  𝐄𝐍𝐉𝐎𝐘𝐄𝐃  𝐁𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐆   𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄   𝐅𝐎𝐑   𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓   𝐈𝐅          not   most   of   the   day   .       it   was   calming   to   her   to   be   out   with   fresh   air   instead   of   the  stuffy   castle   .               (        NO   OFFENSE   TO   CAIR   PARAVEL   .        )               a   queen’s   job   is        never   quite   done       so   the   fresh   air   always   helped   ease   her   back   down   from   the   multiple   documents   to   sign   ,     treaties   to   read   ,     & .     visiting   diplomats   to   subdue     & .     entertain   .       if   she   was   being   honest   with   herself   ,     entertaining   the   diplomats   was   the   thing       she   most   detested     & .     loved   at   the   same   time   .       she   loved   meeting   people     & .     creating   strong   relationships   between   them   ,     but   didn’t   quite   care   for   the   way   that   were   still   skeptical   about   narnia   .

                              but   today   ,     she   was   able   to   get   outside     & .      be    ALONE     for   a   couple   of   hours   before   going   back   to   finish   up   reading   ,     what   she   would   consider   a   tome   of   a   treaty   before   handing   it   off   to   edmund   .       the   gentle   breeze   tousled   her   hair   lightly   ,     making   the   air   around   her   smell   of   the   sea     & .     lavender   soap   which   she   used   to   wash   her   hair   .       the   intermingling   scents   cast   her       into   complete   serenity   ,     which   made   her        even   more   thankful   of  her   decision        to   come   outside   .

wanting   to   enjoy   the   warm   stone   under   foot   ,     susan   slipped   off   her   flats     & .     bent   down   to   carry   them   .       the   stone   was       the   right   temperature       to   warm   her   up   perfectly   as   she   walked   about   .

                              she   didn’t       even   realize       that   they   were   expecting   a   visitor   they   all   grew   to   love     & .     adore   .      once   she   heard   someone   speak     & .     she   saw   who   it   was   ,     a   smile   formed          --------          radiating   warmth     & .     a   bright   welcome   .       the   queen   nearly     RAN     over   to   daphne   ,     reaching   for   her   hands   immediately     & .      dropping   her   shoes   in   the   process   .

   pertinacity may very well end him, with sleep refusing him, while complications       persists.   it  is  a  matter  of  little  urgency  and  still  his  train  of  thought  will  not  halt.   although  they  are  faint,  peter  heeds  the  rhythmic  sound  of  no  doubt  dainty  feet  dragging  along  cair  paravel’s  marble  floors.   he  needs  not  look,  for  knows  her  sound  by  heart.   the  variance  of  each  of  his  siblings  movements  studied  with  care,  as  so  much  else,  to  the  very  last  detail.   and  so  he  sees  no  reason  why  his  eyes  should  wander,  their  red - rimmed  tiredness  much  better  concealed  when  kept  low,  hidden  away  by  heavy  lashes.  he  is  unaccustomed  to  disturbances  at  night  ( the  guards,  of  course,  would  never  speak  )  and  thus  vacant  halls  and  chambers  become  unusually  quiet,  tranquil  enough  to   ease  the  high  king’s  troubled  mind.  don’t  you  know,  susan,  he  rarely  ever  sleeps ?   ❝  i  do  not  much   care  for  prophecies,  as  you  know,  but  this  afternoon  a  faun  approached  me  and  spoke  so  convincingly     of  one  and  i  simply  hadn’t  the  time  to  spare  to  look  it  up  until  now.  i  doubt  i  will  find  anything,  but   i’d  hate  to  let  it  go      ────    why  in  heavens  are  you  still  awake  ?  i  thought  you’d  be  sound  asleep   by  now.   ❞ 

𝐒𝐇𝐄   𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐒   𝐀   𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃   𝐎𝐍   𝐇𝐄𝐑   𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑'𝐒   𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃𝐄𝐑          as   she   settles   down   in   a   chair   next   to   him   .      if   she   was   going   to   be   up   ,     she   might   as   well   be   company   as   he   works   .      susan   gave   his   shoulder       a   soft   squeeze          (        WAS   IT   FOR   REASSURANCE   ?       TO   GIVE   HIM   SOME   STRENGTH   ?      IT   WAS   UNKNOWN   BUT   SHE   HOPED   IT   GAVE   HIM   SOMETHING   TO   HELP   HIM   THROUGH   THE   NIGHT   .        )          before   dropping   her   hand   onto   her   lap   .       nearly   immediately   ,     fingers   were   played   with          --------          as   a   sort   of   a     BAD   HABIT     of   hers   .       as   peter   speaks   ,     her   head   tilts     :     chin   rising     & .     eyebrows   furrowing   slightly   .       when   he   spoke   about   prophecies   ,     she   leaned   back   a   bit   ,     slightly   in   surprise   .       her   eyebrows       knitted   harsher   ,     confusion     EVIDENT     upon   her   gentle   features   .

𝐄𝐘𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐒   𝐅𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐖   𝐀𝐒   𝐋𝐈𝐏𝐒   𝐓𝐔𝐆   𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎   𝐀   𝐃𝐄𝐄𝐏        pout   .        she   was   in   a   frightfully   bad   mood     & .     edmund   only   made   it      WORSE   .       he   shouldn’t   be   correcting   her   on   how   to   properly   talk   !               (        BUT   HE   DOES  HAVE   THE   RIGHT    ,     FOOLISH   QUEEN   .        )                a       deep   breath       before   she   pushes   herself   away   from   the   table   with   a      HUFF   .     blue   eyes   narrow   as   she       glared   daggers       at   her   brother    ,     chest   raising      & .     falling   in   short   bursts   .       was   it   obvious   that   she   was   angry   ?

                    ❝          oh    ,     HONESTLY      edmund   !       must   you   always   be   insufferable   ?       have   you   been       waiting   to   be   like   this   ?       & .      who   are   you   to   say   what   is       proper   english   or   not    ,     you’re   not   an       english   professor    ,     YOU’RE   A   KING   ,          ❞                              she   hissed    ,     eyes   rolling   .       susan   took   a   deep   breath   before   giving   a   brief   look   at   her   other   siblings   before   turning   around      & .     storming   out   of   the   great   hall   .
