Can you use multigenre projects in any classroom?

Of course! Multigenre projects can be used in science, ELA, math, history, art, music, you name it! And the genres students use don't necessary have to match the formats typically taught or used in your classroom. In math, students could do a mock interview with a famous mathematician. In a history classroom, students could design a tattoo based on a historical event. In an ELA classroom, students could make a topographical map based on the setting of a book. The possibilities are endless, and you should have ideas at the ready to inspire students to work in new formats!

What are the drawbacks to multigenre projects?

While multigenre projects are a great way to get students engaged with class content, there are some drawbacks, e.g.:

Multigenre projects required dedicated work time both in and out of class

Because students are working mostly independently, learning can sometimes get derailed

So, how can you avoid these pitfalls? While some of these drawbacks are unavoidable, here's some advice!

Make sure students have time in and out of class for preliminary research so they have plenty of information to draw from! Take students to the library, provide reliable online resources, and have materials in the classroom that students can use!

During in class work time, make sure you're walking around the classroom, asking students questions about their topics, and offering ideas and resources when necessary

Using class time for multigenre projects isn't necessarily a drawback! It gives students an opportunity to ask you (the teacher) critical questions when they get stuck, collaborate with classmates to come up with ideas for genres to work in, and engage with the content in new ways!
