ngl as a Marble Hornets fan, I kept rolling my eyes whenever Ranboo bought up Generation Loss. It felt like he was trying to pull MH fans who haven't watched his series to be fans of GL
Like Marble Hornets CHANGED internet/analog horror and shaped lots of Creepypasta myths, while also inspiring other Slenderverse series. There is a reason why it is considered as the part of the Big Three/Five of Slenderverse, because it kick started literally everything analog horror, Creepypasta mythos and Slenderverse is built themselves upon. It is something that even if you never watched it, you've heard it. I'm sorry but what exactly Generation Loss added to the horror/ARG/comedy community?
Fuck, even Tribe Twelve, which it's name and creator is avoided in the community for very valid reasons, added something and had an idea beyond "let me put famous people and make horror out of it. And there is an evil, controlling cooperation somewhere. But it's funny." Operator, Masky, Hoodie, Alex, Observer, Rake and HABIT are all recognizable and iconic in their own way, as well as Tim, Jay, Brian, Noah, Firebrand and Vinny. They were more than just "let me put famous people on my project". I've seen people say Adam, Noah's actor and the creator of T12, is a bad actor but compared to The Hero/Ranboo, you can see that he is at least trying to act something out. As Noah, as Firebrand, as Prebrand and as future/loop Noah. Firebrand and Observer, despite not having any speaking role, show more personality than The Hero. Both Prebrand and Rendezvous Noah showed in only one episode, but they showed more personality than hours of time we watched The Hero! Or most of the characters, really!
Fucking he'll, Milo's damn journal, annoying as it was, showed more personality than The Hero! Ranboo please explain to us how you are outdone by a DAMN JOURNAL?!
i dont know a single thing about any of this but i believe you
so gen loss 2 got announced. atp i wasnāt sure that was ever actually going to happen
wait really that's crazy. i forgot about this blog tbh thanks for the tip
heyyy, so I literally just started lurking again because ranboo deciding to do a "reboot" again annoyed me so much I wanted to see actual negative opinions on it instead of just blind support or confusion. last time I lurked ranboo and tubbo still lived together but it was near the end of that era.
anyways, I was wondering what the general thought on genloss is around here. beyond it just generally being a flop that has a slim chance of not totally failing but that relies on ranboo not getting distracted by a new shiny idea every other week so it's unlikely.
Genloss wouldve been good if Ranboo was a different person and not ranboo at all. My last straw with Ranboo and having any respect for him at all was seeing how he treated Genloss marketing by bringing his low self esteem into the mix and also taking an entire year for the founders cut which wouldve been the easiest way for anyone new to watch. I still think it was a good story with lots of care put into it and an interesting message around content creators behind it, but execution was fumbled BAD. and i have no hope for the next generation he's doing
genloss was bad because ranboo fundamentally does not understand what makes indie horror compelling and thinks that throwing enough money at a project will make it good. any subsequent genloss content will continue to be bad because he doesn't have any peers who will give him honest feedback so he can improve it. that said I think he should throw some of that money at me to make his shitty video game I will charge the same amount he paid for that stupid ass prop box because apparently that's a reasonable price to him
Jane Schoenbrun only spent 15k on World's Fair which was also their feature debut and was also a commentary on the internet and it was farrr better and cohesive of a story than genloss. The thing is that genloss was partly born out of this strange complex that ranboo has about wanting to be more than just a cc and making sure he "deserves it". Its part of his low self esteem but it explains why he wanted to give so much into that project

The longer the founders cut took the more i lost hope in genloss. The day it came out I was genuinely fucking baffled, instead of being a condensed version of tse for new viewers it was like ranboo had butchered it specifically to appeal to the Twitter fan base.
The founders game has me very cautiously intrigued again. Ranboo is clearly once again absolutely fumbling any semblance of marketing for the thing but at least it's something new that has in fact been on time each week since it started š
Literally all that and it still doesnt have a proper backdrop on letterboxd Losftield experiments isnt gonna get him out of the khia asylum
crazy rating curve tho
20 fansšššššššššš
I know this isnt specifically genloss related, but i figured this was a good place to be a hater. But does anyone remember that absolute failure of a ttrpg ranboo wrote and played with aimsey, charlie, and cellbit? Like i tried watching it bc charlie and cellbit were in it and i love their rpg stuff, but i could not sit through the story without getting secondhand emabrassment. Like everything was pretty shit. The pacing, describing things that werent important vs not describing the important stuff, the npcs who were just watered down versions stolen from other franchises, not having stuff prepared for when players choose to do something outside of what was expected. Like you can almost pinpoint exactly when charlie and cellbit realize that this is going to be terrible and just give up with taking the story seriously and start helping the story along themselves. I understand that being a gm is difficult and takes skill, but goddamn, at least have a solid story first
not enough a ranboo watcher to comment but this sounds like a trainwreck. and about right
genlossneg you will live forever in truth amen
amen š
ranboo talking abt the funding for genloss made me feel like he wanted to skinwalk jerma's irl streams so badly i know this doesnt make sense but does anyone else remember when he really believed hed keep making irl story content for a while and got deluded enough to think genloss would win awards and not just praise from the 200 viewcount CCs he hired for it
Oh early 2023..what i'd do to be that dumb again
The founders game (thefoundergame.com for those who have no idea what I'm talking about) is such a nothing burger currently. It's at least showing that ranboo is capable of maintaining a consistent release schedule, but man. The choices haven't really mattered once yet and it's 6 chapters (aka 6 weeks) in.
Theres some vague hints towards something interesting, but after letting ranboo "cook" the founders cut for over a year only to get a pile of ashes. I'm half thinking that he's hoping for fans to make something out of the crumbs then take it for himself like temu Scott Cawthon.
(Which in his recent reaction to that fnaf timeline video, he framed as a cool thing about storytelling with a community or whatever which. No. That's not how this works.)
Temu Scott Cawthon ššššš thats really disheartenting if he wants to continue with that fnaf lore cool idea abysmal execution path. it feels cheap and lacking of any passion, someone shouldve told ranboo that just because he likes to make edgy pinterest boards doesnt mean he has a genuine talent in storytelling

if you want some fairly in depth film crit as well as some general haterisms you can take a look at @/genlossneg
Oh yes ranbolo stamp of approval theyāre not much active now but iāve looked through
my only thought is that ranboo has a history of either not following through or taking an unreasonably long time so i'd be wary of paying for anything from them that's supposed to come out on a semi-regular basis. but who knows maybe i'll be proven wrong and it'll go great
yeah, the timeline of genloss so far does not give me the most confidence. didn't he also have a channel in his discord for genloss stuff? whatever happened to that
this isnt about the patreon (i havent heard of it but it sounds interesting) but i found a genloss iceburg that was just the most basic level shit in the show or popular/disproven fanmade theories and then the last layer was just ā[redacted]ā and i think thats reflective of the shows writing
that's so funny š
so what's the thoughts on the hypothetical pateron ranboo floated the other day? i haven't really seen anyone talk about it
hey i was the anon who sent the saw references ask!! i forgot to mention that while the carousel scene lasted 42 minutes in genloss, it was around 7 minutes long in the actual movie. yeag
i recommend watching the original scene as it is very well written!! i havent seen saw 6 and even i understood most of it :3
42 minutes for any bit is crazy, let alone one that was originally 7 minutes and way better

i havent seen genloss in like a year so sorry if i get things wrong but i still think about this. also sorgy its so long i got carried away </3
something that really bothers me about genloss [that u may have heard a few times already] is just how. on-the-nose and surface level all the references were?
for example, the bit where ranboo is cutting open charlie. cool conceptually! but awfully executed; it was just a direct reference to saw, toilet and all. and it wasnt even plot relevant, except for the slime = blood thing [which is like 6 seconds of a ~10 minute scene]. all ranboo got from it was a piece from mousetrap, which DID come up later, but that was also filler.
its the same problem i have with the shotgun carousel [which is taken from saw 6], if ranboo really wanted to be creative and make his own unique show, he shouldve made up his own saw trap. i genuinely wouldve liked episode 2 if they did! even if it was bad its still better than directly taking one out of saw and inserting yourself and your friends into it. its just so boring and unimaginative yk? and the worst part of the whole scene is that in the original, the trap is relevant to the main character and is commenting on cruel healthcare policies in the US: the main character set up a policy at his company that would eliminate 2 thirds of people who applied for insurance, so he has to kill 4 out of 6 of his coworkers in the trap. i find it infuriating that ranboo took the trap and even some of the cinematography from the original scene but just completely removed any depth it had and turning it into a "comedy", and remaining oblivious to the message the movie was trying to portray.
new paragraph cuz the last one is long. ranboo just doesnt bother to analyse the media he references and just takes the most surface level ideas and puts them in his weird frankenstein saw trap love letter. i genuinely wouldve respected them more if they were inspired by the analogies created by the traps and how they relate to characters and carrying that same idea into his own characters to give them depth, but he just doesnt bother!! and its so fucking annoying to see!!
and its not like executing references well is all that difficult?? the key thing that makes a reference good is that its irrelevant to the story and its out of the way [imo], like something that goes unmentioned in the background. ranboo couldve done something like putting shots from saw movies in picture frames in the cabin or smthn. still not great, but its less egregious. but naaaahhh lets just rip an entire scene from one of the most famous horror movie franchises and inject repetitive improv into it, thatll be entertaining for half an hour!!
the main problem that arises when referencing media in the way ranboo does is that instead of thinking about how awful the characters must feel, im thinking about saw. i havent even seen saw, and i was thinking about saw. how do you even do that. if he had been creative and wrote his own trap, id be empathising first and thinking about saw second, because its more subtle, and not just a blaring alarm in your face telling you hey did you know that ranboo likes saw. did you know that. now you do!!
thing is its not even the only thing hes referencing, apparently the 1st episode was based on a horror movie called "the cabin in the woods", which is about teenagers who go to a cabin and are made to live out horror clichƩs, and tbh i wouldnt be surprised if that was ranboos main aim for gen 1; to insert himself and their friends into their fav horror tropes
btw just to make sure i wasnt making up stuff to get mad at i checked how long the carousel scene lasted, and from when ranboo enters the trap room to when he leaves is around 42 minutes. how they thought this was entertaining and worth the audiences time is beyond me
tldr; genloss is fundamentally derivative and ranboo doesnt understand characterisation, referencing or pacing. surpriseeee
take a shot every time i said "saw" and "reference" and you'll only be a fraction as wasted compared to if you took a shot whenever ranboo wastes the audiences time /j
wait i had no clue about those bits being references??? i know exactly nothing about horror so that totally flew past me and i don't think i've heard that mentioned yet. this is genuinely super interesting actually, i don't have a lot to add but this is a really great read
Okay so like. I didnāt have any interest in this, my boyfriend did. Heās been talking about it since the first streams, all of the stuff in it he finds cool, and how novel it is as a piece of media. He loves it, heās dropped a lot of money on merch for it (which to be fair, the merch looks sick as hell Iām not even gonna lie), and he really wanted me to watch the founderās cut when it came out. Well, I watched the founderās cut and I just gotta say. Itās awful. I was so unbelievably bored, and when I wasnāt bored I was annoyed. Honestly I think the worst part for me is Slimecicle. He is remarkably unfunny, annoying, and obnoxious, and if his absolutely piss poor excuse for comedy was completely surgically removed (haha see what I did there?) it would make it a lot easier to tolerate all of the other badly done elements of it. Pretty much none of the attempted humor was funny to me. Maybe if I liked the streamers already I would have found it really funny, but I maybe exhaled out of my nostrils like 2 times total. Iām not sure what the consensus is with the Gen loss community about its humor but it did not hit for me in the slightest.
It feels like little of importance was happening for 65% of the runtime, the acting is terrible, the pacing is bad, and itās just. Itās not even remotely good until the last like 45 minutes of the cut. I just could not bring myself to care, it felt like a constant barrage of āthis happened, and then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened.ā Over and over. It wasnāt scary at any point, and I still, even after managing to just BARELY sit through the entire thing, donāt understand how so much money and effort went into this if this was the end product. I was not familiar with any of these streamers besides Jerma and Vinny Vinesauce, which the Founderās Cut does woefully little with, so I had absolutely no connection to any of the characters. If there was some effort made to actually get me invested in who the characters are maybe I would have felt more positively towards it but it feels like Iām supposed to go āHOLY SHIT A STREAMER I LIKE OH MY GODā, which might have worked if I was at all into ANY of the people here. It felt like there were no stakes and nobody was taking anything seriously until the last āactā or whatever when theyāre running around the mall. I see what itās going for, I can read into the metaphor about the dehumanizing nature of producing content for an audience and stuff, but just wow. The worst part is that I was just so bored the entire time. It feels like a āyou had to be thereā kind of thing, and since I wasnāt there, none of it appealed to me in any way.
I donāt know, this clearly isnāt a piece of media made for me but I spent the entire time I was watching TRYING to like it and it just was not it. Ever. At any point. The ending was okay I guess, I like it conceptually, but having Hetch (I think thatās his name, I donāt really recall and Iām not scrolling through the cut to check rn) trying to be a glorified game show host over the only bit of the end I kinda vaguely enjoyed kind of ruined it for me a little bit. Idk. Having Ranboo say āthank youā as his head was turned into a mid at best blood effect was the only bit that made me feel much of anything besides annoyance or boredom. I like the whole concept, but pretty much every part of the execution was horrifically botched, I feel like I shouldnāt have to like the people involved already to be invested in even one of the characters. Maybe the streams were better but I just donāt have any desire to watch them.
Maybe Iām being too mean here but yeah, I basically forced myself through 2 and a half hours of some of the most amateurish āhorrorā content Iāve ever seen and it felt like I got very little out of the entire viewing experience besides 45 minutes of content that got dangerously close to being okay at best.
this has been sitting in my inbox since the founders cut came out and i was going to respond to it once i watched it but clearly that is not happening anytime soon, so i can't speak to that specific experience but i definitely think watching it live added to the experience at least a little since the audience had a lot of chances to make decisions which kept it at least a little engaging. im not shocked the founders cut is super jumpy because they condensed a lot and the filler, while annoying, did keep the pace reasonable. i agree w a lot of your overall critiques and thanks for sharing a founder's cut take!!!
