As soon as I found out this comic cover existed, I just knew I needed to redraw it with my own pseudocast. incessant ramblings about this redraw under the cut

The references that survive to this day are the most obvious ones within the movie itself - the obvious nods and homages to the cinematic Frankenstein and Dracula productions.

I am not aware however of how much people keep up with the idea that by making the mash-up of Frankenstein/Dracula an absolute queer figure (genderfluid pansexual, to try to use modern terms), the production was actually highlighting/playing with the inherent homo-erotic subtext of the two iconic works of horror (those same subtexts that people on Tumblr are getting crazy about). Of course, on a much more "simpler" level, it is the old joke "What is a transvestite? Oh that's an inhabitant of Transylvania" - but I don't know either how much of this remains.

Putting all of this aside, there's the topic of the opening song. "Science-Fiction Double-Feature". This song was, from my experience, already getting obscure for people by the early 21st century, but now it is probably even more? Yet this opening song is the key to understand what the "Rocky Horror Show" is meant to be. A queer, snarky, morbidly funny parody (but at times a more straight-forward homage) to the culture of the "late night movies", to the pantheon of "double-features". THE iconic midnight movie was created as an excentric and maniacal take on the science-fiction B-movies and the classics of horror cinema (with some of the movies name-dropped by the lyrics being doubled by visual references within iconic scenes).

And that's not even counting the many, MANY other (more or less subtle, more or less obvious) references to classics of cinema or "weird fiction" that are sparkled throughout the movie (I can't even put them all below because of Tumblr's image limit).
