Chapter 1: Infiltration

"What do you think is this?" Wire asked, looking at the plastic box in front of them. Their client, a contact from Heartstealer, had provided them with a lot of information on their planned heist. Maps, security system, guard schedules and security codes. And- something else. "Don't know, he said, we need this to get into the building. Several doors will only unlock with the content." Killer answered, before wiggling the box a little bit. The small box was rather heavy and it sounded like something was sloshing inside, moving in thick liquid. "A liquid? Do you think this is some kind of acid?" Heat frowned. More instructions would have been useful, but well. "No. Asked about that. He said, we should open this, right before we start or else it might turn bad." Killers voice softened at the end of the sentence. This could only mean one thing- well, two things to be more precise. "A preservative? I do not like where this is going." Wire sighed. "Eyes or hands . Urgh. Disgusting." "Yup." He shook the box again, shivering at the sound of something moving inside liquid. People were disgusting. Heartstealer was disgusting. Urgh. "Enough of this- we go in at Thursday. Get everyone here, we need to plan out." That was an understatement. You simply did not break into one of the biggest governmental funded, medical companies out there, to steal one of their experiments.

They arrived at late noon. It was before the shift between day and night security. With some stolen uniforms and name-tags no one asked any questions. The advantages of a big company, where no one knew their dear co-workers.

The mechanical door opened and revealed a room filled with tanks and machines. Killer entered the room, carefully scanning the room. The tanks were filled with opalescent liquid. Some contained weird organic structures, others seemed empty apart from the fluids. Some of them were completely dark, with all lights on the tank being turned off, and a red mark next to the tank. On each and every tank was the emblem of the Kaido Corp.. A big dragon head with DNA-strands as beard and the typical connection wires of the body mods around.

"This does not look like the normal kind of biomedical research." Killer swallowed dryly. Kaido Corp. was one of the leading factories selling a wide range from artificial limbs, body modifications and general biomedical engineered products. Many research organizations were working for them. Kaido Corp. was sponsored by the government as it was publicly viewed as benevolent and progressive. Many diseases or disabilities were nowadays curable thanks to one or another invention of the Kaido Corp. Network. Of course the company was also involved in weapon development and some other - less humanitarian work. These details were just hidden from the general population. Killer, Heat and Wire knew, that all that public benevolence bullshit was nothing more than PR crap.

"Not really." Wire murmured, touching the thick glass of one of the tanks. As soon as Wire's fingers moved over the glass, the lights under the tank turned on. Wire jumped backwards, hand moving towards his rifle. There was a twitching mass of limbs in the tank. Fingers and arms, small and stunted. Half rotten and decaying. Dying or partially dead. "What... is this?" Wire asked, turning around and looking at the other dark tanks. He started to walk past them, touching each and any of them. "They are dying- this one is already dead." Heat murmured. He had no weak stomach but this was gruesome and scary. They had crucified people in the past, killed their opponents by torturing and dismembering them. Watching these twitching and wiggling limbs caused more than uneasiness. These things did not look human and yet their limbs resembled human body parts. "This one has eyes" Killer said, taking a deep breath. Urgh. It was a chunk of meat with knots, lumbs and holes. Pulsating veins were embedded in the tissues, connecting the different holes. Sometimes pieces of the flesh were moving, revealing globs made of gelatinous mass. Pupils trying to adjust to the sudden light. They were following their moves, observing them. "Is this where they.. are getting their limbs from?" Heat asked and turned towards the Blonde. "Possible. I  mean- most artificial limbs are purely made from metal and other non-biological material. With the increased amount of body modifications, the amount of allergic responses and hypersensitivity reactions also increased. Didn't Kaido Corp. always advertise their products as hypoallergenic? If it is made of modified flesh, maybe that is the reason the limbs and body mods work better?" At least that was Killers theory. It would also fit in the companies underground profile. "Makes sense." Wire sighed. "And these are- the failed ones?" "Or the harvested ones." Killer nodded towards a chunk of meat with stitches. The tissue around the stitches was red and inflamed, with pus covering parts of flesh. "Does not look, like they are reusable" Wire sighed, tapped the glass again and the lights turned off. He did not want to look at this any longer. "Enough of this, turn these things off again. We need to go further." Away from this horror circus. If this was their growing station- where did they get the samples from, the growing hormones? Wasn't there something with different blood groups or cell groups? Biomedical engineering was rather complex - from what Killer had heard of at least. No wonder humanity needed so long to get functioning artificial limbs.

The went further and further - killing one of the security, who noticed them. Apart from that their entry was easier, then they had expected. At least until the lights started to flicker. Former medical white was turned into a dim orange-red. The alarm system was activated and shrill sirens were hurting their ears. Killer felt his heart rate increase. They were so close- just one more room. This was bad news. They were supposed to sneak in unnoticed. "This is supposed to be the room" Killer shouted over the sirens. "Go. Heat and I will take care of the security." Wire hold his weapon, ready to fire at anybody moving towards to them. Killer nodded. "Good. If it gets too dangerous, come to me."

Their client would be pissed if they aborted the mission but he would not risk his friends dying here. Not for some kind of weird human experiment they were supposed to steal.

Killer ran towards the last door. He typed in the code and used the severed hand to unlock the door. As the door closed behind Killer, the noises from the adjacent rooms were cut off. No sirens, no gun shot. Why did they isolate this room so much? Killer quickly scanned the room. What- Killer starred at the container. No. No this can't be. He stepped closer, staring at the person floating in the tank. This was impossible. He swallowed dryly. The body in the tank twitched, a movement spreading through his legs, his torso, his arms. The head moved, his eyes opened and he starred at Killer. "Kid..?" Killer asked, touching the glass, starring at the redhead. He starred back, fierce and unbroken. Angry and disorientated. It took him a moment, he blinked once, twice. Recognition.

Chapter 2:  The Fall of Eustass "Captain" Kid

For quite some times there had been rumours about a big deal. Depending on the sources it was either about body modifications or about weapons. Both of those were of great use for them. They had more than enough mouths to feed and bodies to repair. "We are going to participate" Kid explained suddenly, already half drunk from the all the booze he had downed this evening. In his left arm was a rather petite looking female, leaning against him with blushed cheeks. Kid's newest plaything. Poor thing. Would not last a single night. Killer nodded. He had already expected Kid to participate in the deal. It was a great chance for them and their growing number of men. They knew about Scratchmen Apoo und Basil Hawkins also trying to get their fingers on some of the wares. As if their boss - Eustass Captain Kid - would let them get all the good stuff. "Going to rip those mods right from these government pigs" They had more than enough. As if they were in need of more body modification material, medical supplies or weapons. "We going solo or cooperating with the others?" Both was possible. Killer knew, that Kid preferred to operate alone, but raiding a big governmental organized ware deal was going to be dangerous. "Organize a meeting with those two freaks, they were long begging to kiss my feet." Indeed- both of them had asked more than once for an alliance. Kid had declined until now - not wanting to deal with some "power hungry side chicks, wanting a bit of his fame". "Will do." Killer sighed, before downing the remaining rum. Killer disliked both, Scratchmen Apoo was a loud, obnoxious brat and Basil Hawkins a back-stabbing bitch. He knew, that Kid shared his opinion of them. Anything more than a short time alliance would be impossible with them. He was going to make supre, that Apoo and Hawkins both understood the nature of their short-termin alliance. "Enjoy your evening" The blonde said, before getting up. He would prepare the negotiations and let Kid have his fun with the little girl. She would easily break - nothing more than a little fling. Kid had a high consumption of them.   Kid laughed - dirty and loud and bellowing. It was probably a good thing Kid could blow some steam off, before the heist. Kid was a great leader, sometimes he had the nasty habit of entering full blood lust berserk mode though. Good when you want to slaughter people and destroy as much as you can. Not so good, when you have to deal with fragile wares like body modifications or explosives.

Negotiations with Basil Hawkins and Scratchmen Apoo were easy made. Attacking at the same time-point, gathering the wares and sharing at the end - depending on who killed more Opponents. Killer felt, that convincing them was a little bit to easy, but Kid was eager for the heist. Their people were getting restless. Black market mods often had some kind of side-effects. Pain,  non-compatibility or high maintenance. Getting their hands on some of the real good stuff, would satisfy their people and increase Kid's reputation and bounty. Not that they were small fish anymore. Their name was well known by general public and underground people alike. Kid's opinion on the topic was different though. The more, the better.

Kid sat in front of the fire, leaning back against one of their weapon crates. Everyone who was joining their heist was supposed to check their weapons, clean them and take good care of them - men who died, because their weapons were not well-maintained, deserved neither pity nor grief. Heat and Wire were sitting to his right and left, both heavily armed and ready to go. Killer was equally equipped, kneeling in front of Kid, holding his hand. "This looks so romantic" Heat sighed in a dramatic way. Wire snorted in amusement before nodding. "Right. Are you proposing? Awwwh." He made a duck face, pushing his lips forward and blinking at their Boss. "Fuck off!" Kid growled, ripping his hand out of Killers to flip Wire off. At least until he realized that half his finger was now stained in crimson red nail polish. "I hate you so much" Killer murmured in a quiet voice, before he grabbed Kid's arm and continued painting Kid's fingernails. Every time. Every - fucking - time. It was one of their rituals - back from the times when it was only the two of them. Two scrawny half starved teenagers fighting for their lifes. Fighting for their place in an unfair society. Heat and Wire knew about the beginning of their ritual - still they sometimes made fun of their boss and his first man's -beauty routine-. None of the others dared to comment on Kid's fingernails - Kid was not exactly known for his calm temper. However, that did neither stop Wire nor Heat.

They outnumbered the security staff by far - killing them was easier than they had expected. However, with governmental reinforcements and their allies men suddenly attacking them- the fight quickly turned from very good to very, very bad. Heat got shot - stomach. Kid was bleeding from multiple wounds, most of their rookies were already dead and those who did not die in the initial attack, were fleeing the scene. Fucking traitors. "Killer. Wire. Take Heat. Leave. I follow." Kid's voice was even louder then the sounds of dying men. It left no room for back talking. As much as it pained Killer - Orders are orders and he would not object Kid in a situation like this.

Several hours later, when the flames were extinguished and the tear gas had vanished, Killer and Wire were searching the fighting place. The others were back at their safe house, licking their wounds and helping those, who could not take care of themselves. "He has to be somewhere here" Wire said, jaw grinding. Kid would not go down so easily. Surely he was just stuck under some of the debris, ready to bitch at them, why it took'em so long. Killer remained silent, hiding with Wire behind debris and broken cars, sneaking closer and closer. They searched the entire place, but nothing. They even were bold enough to enter the middle of the place, with no coverage at all. But nothing- no sign of Kid. Neither dead or alive. When they hid behind a collapsed building, waiting for the guard drones to disappear, they waited in silence. Neither of them was in the mood for idle talk. The betrayal of Scratchmen Apoo and Basil Hawkins was one thing. Worse was the felling of guilt. Killer felt, like he had left Kid behind, like Kid's disappearance was Killers fault. He should have stayed longer, stayed at Kids side. If he had refused Kid's Order, if he had stayed with him- maybe then- "Killer." Wire's voice interrupted his trail of thoughts. Killer looked up, looked at Wire and then followed his gaze. The corpse of a young man, metal prosthetic leg half torn off, other leg broken and bend. It was not the sight of the corpse that made Killers chest tight. It was the hand around the broken neck, with nails painted in crimson red. He said nothing as he took the sight in. The severed arm, bone sticking out, teared muscles and ripped skin - if he did not die from the debris falling on top of him, then surely from blood loss.

Killer stood for a moment, gazing at the crumbled building behind the corpse. He wanted to move the building, to search for his friend. He wanted to bury him- "We go back. We need supplies and first aid material, before even more of us die." He bit his lip, crouching down an taking Kid's arm. They would bury, what they could, honor him at least in that way. If Killer had stayed with Kid- they probably would have died both.

Chapter 3:  Singularity

Killer continued to stare at his long lost friend. He noticed the faint red glowing of his metal prosthesis, the tattooed emblem of the Kaido Corp. on his leg and many scars, he did not used to have. Still, no matter the changes- he recognized him. He probably would recognize Kid no matter what.

Kid opened his mouth, as if trying to say something, but due to the thick liquid filling the tank no sound escaped his throat. He moved his non-mechanical hand, touching the glass at the same spot Killer touched it. Killer could feel an electric jolt, as if Kid was able to reach through the glass. He nodded, slowly. Understood. He needed to get Kid out there as quickly as possible.

Starting from the control panel next to tank, Killer checked all his options. Locked. Neither the door code, nor the severed hand worked. He pushed the useless limb into his pocket, before gazing around. There had to be a way.

"I'll get you out there" It nearly felt, as if Killer wanted to convince himself, by saying it loud. How? How was he going to get Kid out of the tank. Pure violence probably did not work. He took a good swing at the glass tank. His hand hurt and Kid seemed amused. Asshole. Old Habits die hard. Killer followed Kid's gaze. Why did he stare at the control panel? Killer followed his friend's gaze, checked the panel again, before looking back to Kid.  Slowly Kid raised his arm, signing off numbers, which Killer typed into the panel. With the last number being typed in, the lights turned green and there was some kind of audible feedback. A warning sign appeared on the screen next to the tank. Evacuation ongoing. Seemed about right.

Killer took a step back, as the tubes outside the tank were moving, pumping the oxygen enriched liquid out of the tank. Kid seemed fine. He watched as the redhead started coughing the thick oxygen enriched liquid up. It sounded painful. Killer frowned. After the glass door of the tank opened he closed the gap to Kid, holding him up, while the coughing fit shook his entire body. "Easy there." "Took you... long... enough." Kid managed to press out between another coughing fit. Breathing in the weird goo was fine, getting it out of the system and getting used to breathing air again was a pain in the ass though. They had used it as torture on him before. Not fun. Definitely not fun. "We- we need to get you out here and then.. we need to talk" Killer sighed. His mind still did not manage to accept the fact, that Kid hadn't been killed back then. But this was definitely his friend. Eustass Kid. It was less the physical appearance of the other and more the way he was talking and moving. He felt right. They had known each other for many years before his downfall. They grew up together. They had saved each other's ass more times, than Killer could count.

"Who else here?" Kid was not sure how much time had passed since they last saw each other. Tests and operations, torture and training, pain and unconsciousness. In this damned laboratory the only rooms Kid ever saw, were the training room, his tank and the operation room. There was no sun or moon, no day or night. Kid was not sure if was months or years. They kept him starved and hurt. Easier to control. They wanted to find a way to keep his fighting spirit, while at the same time break his own will. They failed.

"Heat and Wire are fighting the security. Some others are outside, guarding our escape route. We should hurry." Naming them would be futile. Some of them joined after Kid had fallen.

Kid nodded, before coughing for the last time. He straightened up, rolling his shoulders and then ramming his bionic fist into his right hand. "Fine. I'm done killing  rookies or robotic targets." He tilted his head from side to side, letthing his bones creak, before turning towards the door. He did not bother with entering some bullshit codes to open the door. He wanted to test his powers. The first hit bent the metal door, activating the sirens and the security system. It needed a second and a third hit and the door was open far enough, that both of them could slip through.

"Do not give me that look, heh- how long do you think I wanted to this?" Kid grinned. "Security system in the other room was activated anyway. So, sht!" Killer just sighed. Some things never changed. He followed Kid, quickly scanning the room. There were  dead soldiers and parts of broken machines scattered all over the place. "Heat and Wire forced them back another room." Killer explained, while searching for his comrades. There- a glimpse of dark red cape caught his eye. "Wire?!" He shouted. "We're here! We need to get out- job's cancelled."

Killers voice was shouting over the shrill sirens of the security system. "Job's done, you mean-" Wire's voice broke, when he stared at the Redhead. What- what? How? Why? He ducked down last second, evading one of the attacks.

"Watch out!" Heat screamed, before taking out the attacker. In the meantime Kid had moved forwards. Parrying the attacks with his metal arm, before making short work of the remaining soldiers and attackers. Enjoying himself, while he tore through them.

Killer had heard about the specially engineered soldiers. There were rumors about special governmental fighting units. Body modifications, engineered limbs, increased stamina and senses. No own will, pure fighting machines. Watching Kid slaughter his way through the Kaido Corp. made him comprehend, what special class meant. God. The world was a fucked up place.

Escaping was easier than thought - even after Kid had activated nearly all security systems. They were out, before the real big guys came. Kid fighting like a berserker came in really handy. Killer already tried to contact their client. He wanted to inform them about the failure of the mission, but none of the contact numbers were working anymore - weird. He needed to talk to Heartstealer - later. When Kid managed to accustom himself to being free again. He was sitting with them, acting all normal. As if the last years did not happen. But deep down Killer knew, that Kid would need time to heal. He frowned, at least until Kid shoved one of the bottle of booze in his direction.

"Less bitch-face, more drinking" the Redhead hummed, before observing Heat and Wire again. One of the soldiers managed to got a good hit on him. He had been distracted by Kid's appearance. All of them had.

"Probably gonna hear in the news about this soon" Heat murmured, while continuing to stich Wire's shoulder. "Don't think so." Killer answered. "News gonna be manipulated. Probably gonna report something about organized crime" Wire groaned in pain, while Heat was taking care of his wounds. Not like he was whiny, but stitching a wound without pain medication was a bitch. Especially after Heat had to fish out some metal and glass splinters beforehand.

"Agree- not like they gonna say, that they had some kind of organ harvesting, human experiment freak show thing going on in there. When I close my eyes, I still see those eye-things moving around. Urgh." "Who you call human freak, huh?" Kid grinned at Wire, knowing very well, that he was exactly that. No pure human anymore. "Stop whining about your wounds, you know I noticed you stared at me, when the soldier hit you."

"Says the cyborg" Heat teased with a sly grin on his lips. It was weird. Even though it had been more than two years, since Kid had fallen- had vanished, talking to him felt, like not a single day had passed. Kid's appearance had changed. Not only the metal parts- Kid had always been muscular- but now? Beefy looking, strong muscles, broad back, neck like a bull and these legs - "Can you squeeze a watermelon between your legs?" Heat suddenly asked, staring at Kid's muscular thighs. Kid who was downing some of the booze they had left in their hideout, got the drink in the wrong pipe. Killer patted his back. Helping his friend getting liquid out of his lungs once more today.

The first time Law saw the redhead in one of his physiology lectures, he felt like he knew him from somewhere. Law recognized him, but was not able to pinpoint where he knew him from. Law tried to ignore the uneasy feeling in his guts and continued to explain the basics of physiology to the freshmen. He focused on the medical terms, explained them, while heat was pooling in his stomach. Law felt hot and cold at the same time. Good thing he kept his body under control while teaching the other students. Again and again he looked towards the new student, before regaining focus. Law was happy about the end of the lecture. He sat down at the desk, waiting for the students to leave the room. What had happened? Why did his body suddenly act up? Was he becoming ill? Probably. It felt somewhat different though. When Law heard footsteps coming closer he raised his head and looked into amber eyes.

"Yo. Pretty young to be an old ass professor?" The voice of the redhead sent a chill down his spine and Law cleared his throat before answering. "I am working as assistant for one of my professors. I am still studying myself. " "Ah. Thought so. I need this course for my program, fuckers just told me last week, missed the last lectures. I'm Kid by the way, Eustass Kid" His gaze was fierce. It felt like the redhead- no, like Kid was devouring him with his gaze. Where did he know him from?! His face, his act, his demeanor and even his voice felt so familiar. "Let me check. Mh- no. Your name is not on my attendance list. Should be no problem though. Go to the office of the registrar and talk to them. They'll help you. You'll find the notes online. Ask your classmates about the subjects you missed, if you have questions. If they can't help you, you can -" He cleared his throat, while narrowing his eyes, focusing Kid. "- you can ask me for help. I will be teaching this subject for the entire semester. During semester break I am studying for my own exams though, so no questions then." With his hands down in his pockets, Kid nodded. Helpful. "Good. Was worried about getting kicked out or some stupid shit like that. Well, gonna talk to the office then, see ya" Before Kid could turn around, Law raised his voice. "You are allowed to miss a couple of lectures, especially if there is a reason behind, so no worries about getting kicked out, another thing- do I know you from somewhere? Where you in one of my other courses last semester?" The Redhead grinned at him, showing sharp canines and looking at him intensely before shaking his head. "No. Studying mechanical engineering." Suddenly the redhead was in Laws personal space, staring him down. Law, due to his sitting position, had to tilt his head back. Heat rushed through his body, down to his crotch and up to his cheeks. Someone called. Before Law could react to Kids intrusion in his personal space, Kid turned towards the Blonde calling for him. "Yo, Killer, I'm on my way. Need to go to the fucking office thing."

Law stared at Kid. Blinked once, twice and tried to ignore his hard-on. What the hell had that been? He took a few minutes to cool down, before getting up. Law was confused. When had that happened last? During puberty? Probably.

The rest of the day Law felt uneasy. Something with the redhead was off. The way he had stared at him, grinned and talked. The way he had leaned in. It reminded Law of something, but what? It had been months since he had found someone remotely attractive and now his body went full puberty-random boner on him. It was like either he was fifteen again or that his body had a mind of his own. Law was not sure what option would be worse.

It was the same evening Law got his answer. His daily routine consisted of going to university, suffering through several hours of lectures and coming home in the evening just to collapse at his desk with coffee. He tried to focus on studying, was too tired to do so. Then, after being frustrated for a while, he laid down in bed, trying to get sleep. That was futile too, sadly. Being frustrated and worked up, Law decided on his self-care routine with the "Captain".

The moment he logged into VPN, opened his favourite site and searched for the Captain, he froze. No. He stared at the thumbnail of the video he had planned on watching today. No. No. No. He clicked on the video, started into the face of the "Captain". "No." His voice was only a whisper. He closed the tab, closed his browser, closed VPN, turned his laptop off, before staring blankly at the ceiling.

He wanted to die out of shame. Eustass Kid, the brute from his lecture, was the fucking "Captain". Worst part, Kid knew about him - That was the reason he had smirked knowingly. "You fucking traitor" Law muttered in the dark, addressing his own body. No wonder his body went full horny mode, as soon as he had seen Kid. For the last years he had pleased himself almost exclusively, while watching the redhead. Muscle memory and Pavlovian Conditioning be damned. Nice one. Fine. He needed to deal with that as soon as possible. He could not walk around university with a fucking boner. He needed more information at first.

Said and Done. Thanks to social media, Kid's name and the university website he found a lot of information about the Redhead. Even though he had rather mediocre grades in school, he was now part of a working group focussing on the intersection between bioinformatics, medicine and technology. To be more precise, Eustass Kid was working on the programming and details of artificial limbs.

"Interesting" Law murmured. That was probably the reason why he was in need of some medical lectures. His background was different from most students. His grades were terrible. So either Kid had connections to one of the professors or - more likely - his understanding for complex technology was far above average. Yes. That must be the reason for him being in the work group. Outstanding knowledge in technology. Considering Kid looked and acted like a pleb it surprised Law. Seems like "the Captain" was not only good looking, but also had something in his brain after all. Focus! Law needed focus.

University was killing Law's will to live at the moment.

Long lectures, exhausting seminars and practical lab work was draining all his energy. And if that was not enough, as cherry on top, he worked parttime for one of his professors. It would be so much easier to just go and ask good old Doflamingo for enough money to pay for the basics, but no. Law was too stubborn. He would succeed without begging his foster parent for more money. Screw him, his arrogant attitude and the entire Donquixote family (except Corazon). Law would not crawl back to him!

Law's day had been long, very long. With his first lecture starting at eight in the morning and his last seminar being at six in the evening, most of his day was spent at university. He had very little time to study, even though he was in desperate need to do so. Law already failed one of his classed once. There was a second try, but no third. Law could not accept failure. He could not simply choose a different career path, not with his heritage.

In desperate need of a break, Law sighed and sat down with a cup of coffee. He felt uneasy. He felt pressured. Law was too tired to study, too exhausted to comprehend anything higher than basic information anymore. Not being able to concentrate anymore, he stared blankly at his screen.

Whenever he tried to calm down, to take a little nap, or even go to sleep, Law felt guilt rising up. He felt guilty for not-studying anymore, for not trying harder. It felt, like he was failing Corazon, or worse like he was besmirching his parents’ good name.

Sighing he leaned back in his chair, still staring at his screen. He just needed to be calm enough for a little nap. Afterwards he could continue studying. Law felt trapped, trapped in a hamster wheel of university and guilt.

It was not like Law did not have any coping mechanism with stress. Just... that none of his usual coping mechanisms were available right now.

His ex-boyfriend had helped him quite a bit. With his rather carefree attitude he had helped Law with balancing studying time and free time. But things had not worked out. Law moved away for med-school, Luffy was following other goals. Breakup had been agreed on by both of them.

Law knew, that to satisfy his primal urges and to relieve his sex drive he was not in need of assistance by another person. Internet be blessed with the sheer endless possible sources of masturbation material.
