â and why did you show up? because you want answers. â he starts, his eyes on the empty park ahead of him. â you can ask one question. so make it a good one. â it was a bit obvious that heâd ask her to come to see him. he missed her and by the looks of it, she wanted to see him too despite her last words to him. there was a connection there that they both couldnât shake. and lately, with the fake marriage and faking that he didnât feel some type of way for gemma, he just needed to be real for once. he owed that to himself. â you call it negative, I call it realistic. itâs a cold world out there, gemma. itâs better to have low expectations. â He pressed his lips together in a thin, stiff line for a moment. â you think to see you will make me feel better? please. I was obviously talking about harlow. â he nodded his head as a mischievous smirk of his own appeared on his lips. â but to you give an escape route from princeton, Iâm one call away. â
âmaybe i was just bored and didnât want to spend the night sitting in my room.â gemma suggested, looking over at him but knowing it was no use because he had always been able to see right through her. âone question? come on, you know i have, like, a million.â she scoffed, but her mind was already racing at the thought as she tried to to think of just one. part of her didnât want to ask, afraid of the answer. but she also knew she shouldnât pass up the opportunity while she had it. bennett wasnât a talker, she knew that. âi donât know. i guess just â was it as real for you as it was for me? and do you regret it? all of it?â avoiding his eyes she bit her lip before letting out a soft laugh. âi know, i know. thatâs two, but i donât care.â she had so much more she wanted to ask him, and she feared sheâd never have the time to ask him. or that heâd never open up enough. âis it really, though?â sometimes she was too much of an optimist, and she knew that. sheâd gotten hurt a lot because it, but deep down she knew sheâd rather try and get hurt than to not and be left wondering what wouldâve happened. âi think youâre just scared.â it was harsh, maybe, but she was being honest. and hoping reverse psychology may work a bit on him. âokay fair. harlow is a lot more fun than i am.â she shook her head. âoh sure, get me to need you and not the other way around. i see how your mind works, bennett. guess iâm the crazy one for admitting i might actually take you up on that.â
