...if you're going to optimize for attention, not trust or results or contribution, then you're on a very dangerous road. It's pretty easy to get attention by running down the street naked (until everyone else does it). But that's not going to accomplish your goals. When Oreo gets attention for a tweet or Halotop for a horrible ad, they're pulling a stunt, not contributing to their mission.

On ‘Signals’ — but also Bias

Working on an unlikely project takes guts and hubris. It requires us to have the insight to distinguish it from the impossible, and the desire to not merely do the difficult.

Snap commissioned a survey conducted by ORC International, which found that 47 percent of college students said their university newspaper or official campus communication platform was the primary way for them to learn about events on campus. Social media platforms were the second most popular, with 44 percent citing them as their go-to source of information. (The study also found that 70 percent of college students surveyed read their campus news sources on at least a weekly basis.)

I’ve stopped saying ‘good’ and 'bad.’ It’s either successful or unsuccessful. Let’s face it, there is bad design that is successful. You can debate what good design and bad design is until you are blue in the face. But you can’t deny that LaCroix, for example, is effective design. Or Sriracha. The brand of Sriracha is super strong right now, but I don’t think anyone would say the design is particularly beautiful. Branding is meaningful differentiation.

Companies want people to go post about them on Instagram and feel like their brand is representative of the consumer’s mindset. In order to design things to make people feel that way, designers need to put themselves in the end user’s head.

Solange, in her closing speech, spoke of why 'inclusion and allowance are not enough,' and how even her occupying this space — no matter the creative autonomy — is limited if she and those like her do not shake the ground of these cultural masters’ houses so that the walls begin to crumble.

The key question to ask in the meeting is: Are we increasing value or lowering costs?  Race to the top or race to the bottom, it's a choice.

I think about you every second. I think about all the choices we've made that created this moment.

And maybe that's what makes tragedy so tragic. Not just what happens, but how it happens: a sucker punch that comes at you out of nowhere, when you're least expecting it. No time to flinch or brace.

In the sound-bite economy, power goes to those who can communicate big change in small ways.
