For the folks unfamiliar with the game and it's lore. Please bear in mind most of the lore is currently unrevealed/unknown, as the game is still in alpha so this may change in the future and may not be accurate to the game's canon. Some canon divergent lore stuff is also there.
It all started with two people, an idea, and a little rainbow flower.
Arthur Walton had an idea; To inspire and teach children strong values through the use of cute cartoon characters. He wasn't alone in this endeavor, as he had the help of his friend Delilah Keen. Both of them created a museum and educational center called the "Gardenview Center".
That wasn't all however, through currently unknown means, Delilah was able to create their toon mascots into reality, so not only could people see the characters on everything, they could meet them in the flesh! Arthur meanwhile, created the cartoon show known as "Dandy's World" in 1990. Instead of hiring actors to voice the cartoons, the Toons themselves brought their voices to the show, giving it an air of authenticity. The Toons were watched over by human handlers, these handlers made sure that the toons and visitors to the center were safe and happy.
For years, everything was peachy keen, with people flocking to the Gardenview Center, and the Dandy franchise expanding into different kinds of merchandise (food, toys, trading cards, video games, etc), it seemed like nothing could go wrong!
...Until, as you probably guessed, it did. All thanks to the rainbow flower that was the star of the show...The experiments Delilah had preformed on him had taken their toll...turning the Lead Toon into the Lethal Toon...L-001. His affliction spread to the mains...then to the others...no Toon was spared from becoming what are known now as "Twisteds"; Toons overtaken and corrupted by ichor, the very substance that made them.
This incident did not fall on deaf ears. And the Gardenview Center shut its doors due to "lack of safety regulations" because of it. The folks who brought the place to life, who helped with the center, and the handlers may have disappeared, but the Toons didn't give up on their home, not that they could, anyway, where else would they go?
Dandy, the namesake and star of the show, created what's known as the "Ichor Operation" in order to keep the center, their home, from losing power and other necessities. And so, the Toons venture deeper and deeper into the center to keep the Ichor flowing, all while facing against the Twisteds roaming the halls on every floor.
They die, over and over again, to keep the operation going. All under the eyes of it's operator.
