Salvador Dali’s pixelated painting of Abraham Lincoln
Spotted last week on a trip to St. Petersburg is my favorite Dali (which, honestly, doesn’t have much competition, sorry Salvador) is “Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea”:
This painting was inspired by a Scientific American article Dali read about visual perception which investigated the minimum number of pixels needed to describe a unique human face. Dali was challenged by that question and set about making this portrait of Lincoln using 121 pixels.
The top photo is by Robert Descharnes, who took a bunch of great photos of Dali.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT IN 4 EASY STEPS
I’ve spent the past year losing 80 lbs and getting in shape. A lot of people have been asking me how I did it; specifics like what diet I was on, how many times a week I worked out, etc etc. So I thought I’d just answer everyone’s questions by giving you guys step by step instructions on how you can achieve everything I have… IN JUST 4 EASY STEPS! Ready? Here we go!!!
1.) NO BEER This is a big one, and one that you’ve probably heard before. Every time you drink a beer, it’s like eating seven slices of bread. That’s a lot of bread!
2.) PORTION CONTROL This is especially true when you go out to eat at restaurants. A good trick to do is when your meal comes, cut it in half and right away ask for a takeout container, so that you can save the rest for later - and even better, if you start your meal out right by ordering lean meats and veggies, you’ll slim down in no time!
3.) HAVE YOUR HEART BROKEN And not just broken; shattered. Into itsy bitsy tiny little pieces, by a girl who never loved you and never will. Join the gym at your work. Start going to the gym regularly, and even though you don’t know that much about exercise and you’re way too weak to do pretty much anything but lift 5 lb weights and use the elliptical machines with the old people, do it until your sweat makes a puddle on the floor. Then go home and go to bed early and the next day do it again. And then again. And then again.
Listen to stories of your ex-girlfriend fucking around with gross and terrible people, stories from your friends who think they are doing you a favor. Go to the gym and make more puddles of sweat. Buy books. Learn about different muscle groups and how they work together. Start eating healthy. Learn about nutrition. Plan out your week of meals. Try to forget her.

It posits that humans all bet with their lives either that God exists or not. Given the possibility that God actually does exist and assuming an infinite gain or loss associated with belief or unbelief in said God (as represented by an eternity in heaven or hell), a rational person should live as though God exists and seek to believe in God. If God does not actually exist, such a person will have only a finite loss (some pleasures, luxury, etc.).
Their is a great chart showing infinite gain vs infinite loss, depending on how you wager, which sums this up perfectly.
But, here's the crazy part: Pascal was a Catholic Jansenist. He believed that people were predestined and that only a small, pre-chosen portion would make it to heaven!

Disclosure: I have been responsible for building shitty dashboards. I personally made most of the errors below. I heretofore apologize to my users and pledge not to do it again. Hopefully, these anti-patterns can help PMs, designers and engineers... Paul Cothenet, Co-founder at MadKudu.

Jeremy has outlined some very good ideas for sharing, interoperability and discovery. This isn't just about an Indie web – it flows through for good SEO.
On the topic of designers preparing developers:
The role of a prep chef is essential to the cooking process. A prep chef’s responsibilities include chopping vegetables and preparing ingredients so that when the rest of the cooking staff gets into work they can collectively spend their time pursuing the art of cooking instead of tediously chopping peppers.
It is developers’ responsibility to do the work of the prep chef. If developers aren’t busy from Day 1 of your project, there’s something broken with the process. Because boy there’s plenty of work that needs done: setting up Github repos, dev and production server setup, installing CMSs, setting up development tools, etc.
Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it's this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, 'Make it look good!' That's not what we think design is. It's not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

John Roderick at Back Fence PDX
Back Fence PDX is a live storytelling series in Portland, OR.
Filmed live at the Mission Theater, September 27, 2013.
Theme: After Dark
John tells the story of a meth-induced mission he undertook one night.
Whatever you think of John Roderick's music is irrelevant. His life is extremely fascinating and his ability to tell us about it is just as good.
Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.

Here's a wonderful bit of insight into how the Rolling Stones evolved Sympathy for the Devil while in the studio.
For years I’ve used YSlow and PageSpeed to profile page performance on 4chan. Page performance has always been important to me for two big reasons: 1) I browse 4chan daily and can’t stand slow websites (especially one I control!), and 2) the site is both operated on a shoe-string budget...
