And then Brian Boucher makes an absolute beauty of a save in the last moment of the last game of the regular season and the Flyers are going to the Playoffs and you’re sprinting onto the ice screaming. And you’re squished against Boosh with the entire rest of the team and the entire arena and the entire city but you look over and all you see is Claude, screaming and squished alongside everyone else, and all you think is, “But why does it have to be so hard?” And something cracks. Something thaws. And yeah, you’re held without a point for the first three games against the Devils, but then something comes alive inside you. You are alive for the first time in months, in years? The Flyers make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, and you and Claude (and Richards and Carter and Hartsy and Gags and everyone!) are all over the points sheet. You’re Mr. Playoffs. You produce the highest output in a Final since Mario fucking Lemieux. And it is hard. It’s hard to go on a Cinderella run. It’s hard to reverse sweep Boston. And it’s fucking brutal to not hoist the Cup at the end of it all. The Playoffs are the hardest thing the human body and spirit can be put through. But for the first time in months, in years? it’s also easy. It’s easy to find Claude on the ice and it’s easy to find Claude in whatever nondescript hotel room the the team’s got him staying in and it’s easy to find Claude in the home locker room and invite him back to Haddonfield with just a look. It’s easy to talk to him about wins and losses, but also about the boys and summer plans, but also about nothing at all. It’s easy to let yourself curl up against him on the couch when you throw on a Western Conference game, to not look around guiltily when he falls asleep on your shoulder on the flight to Montreal, to actually feel hopeful instead of just relieved when the divorce goes through. It’s easy to stop by the hardware store on your way to practice and finally get an extra key made, to not fully hide your smile at the way he lights up. And when you explain that it’ll still be easier to explain to everyone if the official story is that you’re inviting him to move in at the beginning of next season, he just smiles warmly at you like he always does and says, “Of course, Danny” like it’s the easiest thing in the world. And it is.
