A Quick and Dirty Analysis of Everything is going to be OK
Everything is going to be OK is an interactive art piece by Nathalie Lawhead. Â These are my thoughts on it. Â Read more under the cut, but be warned that the topics get pretty heavy.

Pointing this out/fighting against it is basically the whole reason we made this tumblr in the first place
âGamer Girlsâ
You know what, fuck âgamer girlsâ. Who gives a shit what gender you are while you are playing a video game. This isnât find someone to reproduce with game, naw, this is fuckn kill that bich or we will lose game. Next thing you know we gonna get labels like âhot mom gamersâ or âwearing a tank top gamersâ ooh ooh or how about âgot my wisdom teeth pulled out gamersâ?
The reason some girls and women have taken a liking to the term âgamer girlâ or âgirl gamerâ is specifically because of how they are treated in the gaming community (e.g. âgirls donât play video games!â)
If you have a problem with the term then please direct your ire to the community that has made them feel excluded. Thereâs no reason to get mad at them, they arenât causing any kind of harm by identifying with their gender.
op is a little asshole. go play multiplayer (with headset, as a girl) and tell me who truly makes it about gender - you yourself or all the horny immature boys bullying you out of that game, harassing you, asking you about your breast size, and so on, while at the same time, all those shit stains complain online that girls donât even play games and create movements to harass girls out of the gaming community (but girls donât even play games right?!). honestly, so many people probably call themselves gamer girl or girl gamer to stand against that and be visible and to spite people like you, which gets them enough shit already, but we donât need people like you complaining and tagging hate on tumblr when you clearly know nothing about the topic at all; it doesnât even come to your head that everywhere, male is seen as the fucking default so anything other than that usually calls themselves differently or is invisible; only slowly, developers start to cater to women too in triple A games. by giving people shit about calling themselves a girl gamer you just associate yourself to the misogynists threatening and harassing girl gamers online and making a joke out of girls playing games. like, first ask yourself why it may have become necessary to some to call oneself a gamer girl (exclusion? the need for a space for women in the gaming community? easier to find other girls to play with, because people sure as hell donât wanna attract men with that? pride?) than condemn it. whatâs next? shitting on people who specifically say theyâre an RPG gamer because they usually only play RPGs?
Okay holy shit. When I meant I didnât like the term girl gamer (probably should have specified), I meant I didnât like the fact that it has really just created a big divide in the gaming community. Guys use it in a way that over-sexualizes a girl that just plays video games. Even some girls are guilty of trying too hard to be this gaming sex symbol and be segregated from other girls. Not all girls actively try to do that, but YES there are girls that do. Sure girls are entitled to be portrayed in any which way they feel they want to be, but that doesnât mean I should be comfortable with what those girls have done with the label for other girl such as myself and many others who get that label and the negative connotations that come with it simply because we are a girl that plays video games. In case you didnât notice, there is this weird war going on between girls that openly advertise their gender in an unnecessary manner to attract males and those that wish for equality among genders in the gaming community who are claiming this title of âgamer girlâ. âgamer girlâ probably started out as a way for girls to be united in the gaming community but that term definitely has some negative connotations from the disputes between the two girl parties. MY POINT WAS: who even cares about the label and who is a âreal gamer girlâ and who is just a âgamer whoreâ. I was bashing the unnecessary feud it was creating between girls in the gaming community and how it is giving all girls, in the eyes of some males, this over-sexualized persona. If you ask me, it has done more to tear girls apart than it has to unite us.
I agree with the last part, there is a huge divide between women & girls who play games and identify with the term and those who dont. There are even in-fights between the ones who identify with the term: generally in the vein of âIâm a gamer girl not a girl gamerâ (like that makes any sense to begin with). Itâs all a weird struggle to be one of the âcool girlsâ, and imo itâs pointless.
The problem is still rooted in the community and how it views women. Donât announce your gender with a feminine name or avatar or your own voice on a mic. Donât make money off of streaming with a facecam. Donât talk about how girls are treated differently. The anger tends to be directed at the girls/women even though theyâre the ones being yelled at for really, truly absurd shit that hurts no one. We get mad because they give us a âbad nameâ instead of getting mad at the people who chose to both judge a stranger for her harmless behavior, and then generalize all of us because of that shitty judgment.
Anyways you totally donât have to like every single girl who plays games, thatâs silly. Iâm just saying that, when I see posts like your first one, 99% of the time itâs misguided anger at being treated poorly (or just differently!) because youâre a girl too.

Hi! Anyone willing to help me out?
Okay so for my school work, I have to do a rather large case study on the hypersexualisation (or over-sexualisation) of women in videogames. If youâre not too busy, would you please mind just sending me a message about your views on the topic? Itâd really really really help me out a lot! Everyoneâs view is welcome, I wanna know what everyone thinksÂ

Super cute
Attention, all my followers who would like to see a video game made with female, POC and trans characters!
There is an amazing video game being developed by Sketchy Panda Games called Aberford that desperately needs your support on Kickstarter to come to fruition!
Picture it: The 1950s.
In the small, picturesque town of Aberford, Ohio, a zombie apocalypse begins. At first glance, itâs a pretty overdone plot for a game. There is a twist, however.
This game is about 1950s housewives who fight the zombies (previously their friends, husbands, and neighbors) and seek the cause of the outbreak that has decimated only Aberfordâs male population.
This is NOT a standard shoot âem up/brawler zombie game. The creators have crafted fantastic and realistic backstories and motivations for the main characters, and over the course of the game, themes like sexism and racism will be explored.
The creators of the game are also striving to make the game as diverse as possible, within the realms of historical plausibility. With that said, these are the four main characters, playable in the main campaign:
Peggy Whitman, a former baseball player and now dissatisfied wife of the town police sergeant. She hates cooking.
Betty Smith, an ideal 1950s housewife and nurse (former Army nurse) at the local hospital. While she and her husband Phillip are economically middle class, as well as perfect friends and neighbors, they still experience the subtle and often overt discrimination common against black individuals in the pre-civil rights era.
Doris Baker, a first-rate riveter during the war, is now a hard-working waitress at a local diner. She is of Lebanese descent, but passes for white.
Sylvia Hornberger, previously a biochemical scientist alongside her husband, had to give up her job after the war ended. Sheâs now a stay at home mother who is bored out of her mind.
There will be diverse side characters with minor roles in the main story, who will be playable in the âChallengeâ campaign:
Norma, a transgender woman (!) who has transitioned to the extent possible in the 1950s. She was a GI during the war, and now runs a no-nonsense boarding house in town. She takes black-market experimental anti-androgen which protects her from the outbreakâs effects. Learn more about Norma here on Sketchy Pandaâs Tumblr.
Patricia is Peggyâs teenage daughter.
Mary is a third generation Asian American woman who works in the townâs industrial laboratory as a researcher. She struggles with acceptance.
Alejandra is a Latina woman who finds herself in Aberford right as the outbreak starts. She speaks little to no English and is new to the US.
Gameplay will focus on strategy, as youâre playing as a woman with no combat training, with only realistic weapons at your disposal (cast-iron skillets, rolling pins, baseball bats, etc). There will be no flaming chainsaws, nor will there be piles of ammo scattered all over town for firearms. Zombies will be the dangerous, fast-moving âinfectedâ type that can kill you quickly if you donât fight effectively.
Please note that the main trailer for the game on the Kickstarter page was made a while ago, and has pretty clunky graphics (very stiff and uncanny valley-looking character models, and slow rather than fast zombies. The color scheme is spot on for the 1950s, though). This more recent video, however, shows much improved graphics and motion (keep in mind itâs still pre-Alpha placeholder art).
This post is getting rather long, so please refer to sketchypandagames and their Kickstarter page for additional information about the game, how to pledge and what youâll get in return, why theyâre making this game, and why their funding goal seems so high.
Even if you canât afford to pledge, PLEASE hit the reblog button if you want to see a video game with strong female leads and a diverse cast become a reality. The Kickstarter closes on October 19, 2015, at 1:59 AM EDT.

If sjwâs are ruining games how come all the independent games keep getting better and better at the same time that theyâre getting more respectful while the AAA titles still pandering to the same old crowd keep getting more laughable both in content and in general quality
Here are a few examples of reasons that people say SJWs are ruining games:
Gone Home, Depression Quest, and more recently Sunset. These are three indie games which were praised by sites with an SJW bias, but largely panned by gamers because none of them had appealing or even interesting gameplay. In the case of Gone Home, common complaints were that the gameplay was so minimal that it might as well have been a movie (and that the plot was nothing to write home about). Similarly, Depression Quest didnât offer much but clicking different buttons in menus, and Sunset was seen as focusing more on its âmessageâ than its gameplay (which, by all accounts, was clunky and frustrating to interact with).
So this is why people accuse SJWs of ruining games: because SJWs have been making and promoting games which neglect what actually makes games unique as an art form - the gameplay. It would be like making and shilling for movies that are simply spoken word over a black screen - thatâs not a movie, itâs an audiobook.
Now, I would like to know: what games are you thinking of, OP? You say that independent games are getting âbetterâ and âmore respectfulâ, but what are the specific indie titles to which you are referring? Similarly, which triple-A titles are getting worse? (Oh, and Iâm also curious why âgames getting more respectfulâ and âgames getting betterâ are related: correlation does not imply causation, after all.)
Interactive fiction with âminimalistic gameplay:â
Has always existed, and in fact constituted the first ever computer games.
Has always been steadily popular, and increased in frequency no more than any other format.
Hasnât replaced or displaced the frequency of other game categories.
Is especially popular in the form of dating sims and especially porn games, which come out by the THOUSANDS every single year, but apparently those donât count and thereâs only a problem when non-porn ones come out and happen to be too liberal, or something.
No part of your argument exhibits any conceivable way in which progressive attitudes damage the quality of games.
Literally all you did here was complain that youâre not a fan of one particular, harmless gaming style, demonstrating newcomer ignorance to real gaming history.
You talk as though a couple examples of a vast category were praised for progressive attitudes, you think it means that, somehow, âsocial justiceâ types are going to cause more games to be interactive fiction than they would be otherwise, even though just as many games of every single genre, format and style have also been praised for those reasons, because believe it or not, people who like to see positive treatment of human diversity in their entertainment do, in fact, enjoy the same kinds of games that you do and are not âoutsidersâ suddenly âpretendingâ to care about video games.
What kind of games do you play? I'm currently playing gta 5 on pc
Well there are two mods here on this blog, and we have pretty different taste in games, I think! Personally, I like JRPGs, platformers, and rhythm games. Right now Iâve been playing through the Mother series;Â Iâm on Mother 3 and the games are so, so good. I wholeheartedly recommend them to everyone. Some of my favorite series/games are Kirby, Parappa the Rapper, Animal Crossing, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country (all of them except DKC3,) Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy (including Theatrhythm, thatâs such a good rhythm game even if you donât like FF imo,) Xenosaga: Episode 1, Fallout: New Vegas, Shadow of the Colossus, and Ni no Kuni.
I only just saw this, my bad
Right now Iâm playing clive barkerâs undying, animal crossing hhd, and metal gear online
Survival horror is probably my fav genre but I also like stealth games, city builders, post apoc rpgs. I like conspiracy theory games idk why. Love a good (or at least interesting) story. Some of my fav series are silent hill, mgs, fallout, deus ex, hitman, and half life. Idk what youâd really call it but the LISA series is quickly moving up on my all time favs. Also luv tropico and weird games like deadly premonition. I agree with the 1st mod here in that I think everyone should play the mother series. Iâm making my way through them backwards but mother 3 changed me.Â
Long time no speak

âif you want representation, just make your own video game!â
- someone who will never have to make a video game themselves in order to see characters who look like them
- also someone who has no idea how funding and distribution works
- also someone who harasses and flames women who make video games for precisely that reason
Hope it's good, but it sure does feel like a lot of it is an excuse to push agendas.
Fair enough. No one does anything without an agenda. Iâve always tried to be a little too honest on this blog, so hereâs our agenda with Aberford:
1. Show that well-written female characters and a female-driven story can make an exciting, compelling, commercially viable video game. We like playing as different, unusual, unexpected characters because it makes games more fun and interesting. We want to prove that gamers are willing (and eager) to embrace diverse characters and stories when those characters and stories are well-crafted and rewarding. And maybe we want to make gamers a little more critical of when stories and characters are clearly being phoned in.
2. Push the limits of crowdfunding to see if a big idea can go from pre-alpha (proof-of-concept) to a releasable beta, so that developers can tackle more ambitious projects. We think thereâs a huge opportunity for indie devs in the evolving gaming market, and crowdfunding can help devs create their visions by getting buy-in up front from fans and gamers, not banks and investors who donât actually play games.
3. Emphasize player-focused design in video games, where we keep players focused on having fun and avoid the parts of the game that are boring or pointless. Thereâs lots of people arguing about video games, and we want to push the discussion back towards âDoes this make the game experience better?â
4. Become successful here so we can continue making great video games for years to come. And maybe help other like-minded devs get to where they can do the same.
5. Make people think critically about their assumptions and biases, but thatâs hardly revolutionary. Most good games make you think. The best games leave your brain in knots for days and generate pages of forums threads while people try to analyse what happened and why. Again, our focus is on making the game experience better.
6. Bash some frickinâ zombies in the face while wearing a fancy â50s dress because itâs going to be awesome.
Thatâs it. Thatâs our whole agenda. Itâs no secret. And Aberford exists so we can push it. If thereâs anything in that agenda you find objectionable, Iâm always happy to discuss it. Otherwise, this is what weâre up to.
