people weren't kidding when the said the expanded universe was hiding a ton of rich lore
The Eighth Doctor in DOCTOR WHO: THE MOVIE
it's still killing me that the doctor and the master are canonically each other's emergency contacts. who gets your will when you think you're about to die oh right it's the guy that's been trying to kill you. for centuries
I know it's written off now as the Doctor not being familiar with regeneration and getting overwhelmed by the process their body went through to the point it fucked with their thoughts but Two being all "Oh I'm not the Doctor :) he's dead and I'm something else imitating him in his skin :) the Doctor is dead but I am him and he's me and I'm both alive and not :) ANYWAY I'm really into the recorder now! #myinstrument :D" is metal as fuck
Doctor Who comes back and the first episode is a painstakingly detailed adaptation of Lungbarrow

this scene is my fav because missy is surrounded by unit soldiers but they’re all just like “oh they’re having a moment ok we can wait”
I love collecting doctor who photos, I see one I like and go ‘you’re coming home with me’ and then it just sits in my camera roll for me to look at whenever
a few of my favorites

My first issue with a lot of the Doctor Who in-universe manuals/guides is that they often go with the gimmick of being written from the point of view of the Doctor. As if that dork would have the patience to sit down and write a manual or field guide about anything that would be even passingly cohesive to the average reader.
My second issue is that they're often just....... wrong.
#now if they were audio logs of the doctor incorrectly and smugly explaining everything #now we're talking - @tigirl-and-co
I like what you're cooking
so we just need to headcanon that they're all being written down or scrapbooked by a companion who's getting all their info from the Doctor and assuming it's true.
Okay but which companion would do this?
Depending on the vibe of the guidebook (cute/touristy vs. academic) I could see Sarah Jane, Nyssa, Evelyn, Benny, Martha, or Amy doing it.
The guidebooks are therefore the product of the Doctor lying for a significant amount of it, the companion in question perhaps mishearing or misunderstanding some of the lies they were told, and then later when they write it down not remembering everything precisely (there is always so much going on in these stories, so it would be reasonable to assume things get jumbled up even further). Makes perfect sense that a lot of it is Wrong.
