Fish are not objects to make your living room or your restaurant look pretty. They are not prizes to give away at the fairground. They are not disposable items you can just flush down the toilet when you’ve lost interest in caring for them.

These intelligent and sensitive creatures are seen as no more than ornaments, a hobby or kids toys in the pet trade and, although the third most popular pet in the UK, they are also one of the most under appreciated.

Instead of experiencing the openness of the oceans, or the waters of the lakes and streams they are meant to live in, they live instead between four glass walls; even the most elaborate set-up can’t even come close to their natural environments. Fish are generally social animals, but many are forced to live a solitary life with little more than their own reflection to stimulate them. They are seen as stupid, low intelligent and disposable animals that don’t need much thought and, because of this, countless numbers die every year from neglect.

Keeping them captive plays no part in their conservation and supporting the industry only ensures more are bred into a life of captivity. In fact, some reports say that around 95% of saltwater fish sold in the US are actually wild caught meaning the industry is actually causing damage to the wild populations.

Please do not buy fish from pet shops or breeders and please share this to help spread awareness and help to end their trade. They deserve better.
