“I promise it’ll be worth it!” Lily said, holding up her pinkie finger for extra measure as they walked up the hill in order to get to get to what Lily thought was the best vantage point for the sunset. “We’re almost there and then we can set everything up at the top.”

“I don’t remember this being so hard back when I was younger…” Not that he’d had all that much practice and the tent wasn’t quite like this one. “Shit!” He exclaimed as the poles clattered on top of him sending the tent down again. “Oh for fuck sake… You need to come do this Gabe.”

Gabriel jumped slightly when the clattering occurred, turning to look at a collapsed tent once more. “What makes you think I’ll be any better at this?” he asked as he came over to help Drew. “Can’t we just book a hotel or something? This is so unnecessarily complicated.”

“That’s the one thing I hope to see sometime in my life, all of their backup plans. They must have a filecabinet filled of them.” She mused, “What am I, six?” Charlotte started to say, as if she really didn’t want to. “Absolutely I do.” 

“I would love to tell you yes, absolutely but… I have some bad news for you. You’re going to be carrying the team here.” She said, trying to make sense of the instructions as he set everything out. “These pictures look like they’re not in order, can you read these?” Aspen then asked, holding the paper towards him.

Aurelie snapped to try and get his attention. She pointed to the one side he was holding, after she had found the small letter B engraved into the metal. She pointed at the pole to show him where to find it. She then pointed to herself, and signed the letter B.

“Hmm... I guess that makes sense,” he replied after realizing the little letters she was pointing to. “I suck at this.”

“How did you fuck this up so quickly?” Alexandria asked, pulling apart the poles so they could start again. “Did you leave your eyes at home or something?” 

“And I’m any better? It’s like you don’t even know me sometimes.”

“This frisbee wasn’t my idea either,” he simply pointed out.

Riley simply just looked at the other, blinking before shaking his head, “You’re an odd man, Adams. I guess if you have the same passion for sheep as you do, then yeah it’s the perfect place. But I don’t have that.” He explained with a small shake of his head. “I had a really crappy family, my mom took off not long after I was born and then my dad was a drunk.” He told the other, “I ended up in foster care before I was ten, bounced around from home to home but no where stuck. When I was eighteen me and my best friend left the system and decided to just leave that place. We ended up travelling, came to the states last before I ended up here.” He spoke, clearing his throat as he moved onto the next part of his story. “But one night we ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and- some … guy tried to rob us, my friend tried to stop him and ended up with a knife in his stomach. The wound was too bad and he ended up bleeding out before the paramedics arrived and he died.” His expression turned to one of numbness, he still blamed himself for his death. If he hadn’t taken too much of his power unnecessarily, maybe none of this would have happened. But he didn’t want to share that much with the other, this little bit was hard enough for him to explain, he didn’t need to add more baggage to the story. “I had to get away, so I ended up here. Clean slate, trying to live my life for the both of us.”

This conversation had taken a much more serious turn than he had been expecting. It also didn’t help that Gabriel was terrible with feelings, it’s why he avoided them as much as possible. After hearing the person he’d been working beside for all this time open up about his past had him truly speechless. What did someone say to something like that? “Your dad was shitty too? We could start a club,” Gabe replied. An out of place joke– a bad habit of his. He took in a deep breath. What could he say? “I’m... I am really sorry that happened though. That can’t be easy to carry with you everyday,” he said sympathetically. “I hope you’re getting that clean slate you were looking for here.”

“We’re not going to run into a bear or something... right?” he asked Jude as they made their way deeper into the forest. “I don’t think I could handle that emotionally nor physically.”

“Aw c’mon– you know my hand-eye coordination when it comes to sports is terrible,” he groaned, having to head back to fetch the frisbee that had dug into the sand behind him. He had missed– again. “This thing is stupid,” Gabe insisted, trying to fling it in Kennedy’s direction, not sure if it’d go far enough.

“It says A goes to B but... how do we know which one’s A and which one’s B?” Gabe asked, twisting the bars around and trying to figure something out. “I’m supposed to be an engineer, why the hell is this giving me a hard time?”

“How do people plan these parties so conveniently? Like... if it was raining today this would be the worst party ever,” Gabe couldn’t help but point out. “Anyways... want to build a sandcastle or something?”

“Any chance you’re secretly a pro at this?” Gabe asked the other as he began laying out everything they needed to set it up.

“It’s too late for second guessing, I already trust you,” She spoke, “Unless you have a reason for me not to?” Lily then said, despite her words Lily probably would have trusted him regardless of anything. Some people probably would have said it wasn’t a good trait to have, but Lily didn’t agree.
