For all you chionophileâs out there.
Finally the skeleton shit is over, now itâs Christmas time :^)

Tips for living alone
Buy a bat (I have my old color guard rifle) or similar. Keep it in your room/near your bed.
Get a lock for your bedroom door.
If youâre moving into a new place, change the locks. Who knows who had a key to your place before you.
Keep your phone/a phone in your room.
Get a weather alert system set up. App, weather call, little weather radio that tells you about major weather events.
Adopt a pet
Wave at your neighbors. Take note of the ones that make you uneasy. Watch out for kids always.
Be nice to your mail person. No matter what.
If you choose to drink/etc alone, unplug your wifi router. Youâll thank me.
Have extra seating. People sit when they visit. Your one comfy chair is great for you. Not so great for you + grandma + ur five cousins, your aunt, and a couple others.
Learn the self-Heimlich
When you take a shower, bring your phone to the bathroom in case you fall your phone is no longer halfway across the house, itâs just on your counter
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Idk what else
If you live in an one-room apartment, put a screen around your bed. Itâll feel less like you visit people, esp. strangers, into your bedroom. Also youâll feel much safer sleeping in the enclosure. Cook enough for a few meals each time you cook, and freeze the extra food. That way youâll prevent things from expiring and itâs great when you donât feel like cooking or have no time or energy for it.
Give a key to someone near you trust, or hid it somewhere few people will look, like up in a tree. Shutting yourself out isnât nice, esp. not at night. Put something translucent like curtains or stickers for windows where people can walk past or look in. Youâll feel less watched that way.
Put some contant money somewhere in your room. Good to have in case your bag gets lost or stolen.Â
Feeling lonely? Remember, online contacts are not less valuable.
I would say maybe set reminders for everything too. Taking meds/vitamins, working out, going to sleep, waking up.
Buy a small fan for white noise at night if youâre the kind (like me) that gets anxious at all the little ambient noises that ANY building can supply in the dark. Donât watch scary movies in the dark by yourself, with no visitors. NETFLIX, if you can afford it. Itâs also useful because you can watch movies / shows with your online buddies at the same time, miles and states and (sometimes even) countries apart.
get an app like safetrek. never walk into allies or empty streets if there is a more populated/well-lit route to your destination. keep emergency contacts in your wallet and a red cross card with your blood type on it in case anything happens. carry a list of medications youâre allergic to, if any.Â
walking around with a headset or headphones discourages people from yelling at you on the street, and itâs easier to escape from hasslers. however, itâs pretty advisable to not have anything actually playing so you can be aware of your surroundings. if anything, have it at low volume.
if you get grabbed on the street (this used to happen to me a lot), immediately scream, and the person will usually get startled, giving you time to get away.Â
if you feel like youâre in a really bad place, call someone, or even pretend like youâre calling someone. say where you are. act like youâre planning on meeting up with them. be loud about it. make it seem like someone will notice if you go missing, even for a little bit.
also u should look up manufacturerâs coupons like damn i feel like a successful suburban mom every time i walk into cvs and save 2 dollars on my toothbrushes
PSA PSA EVERYBODY NEEDS
me welcoming you into my disgusting room: and this is my depression crevice
im not even an artist and these prices are hurting my feelingsÂ
This is what I have to dig through every time I look for new jobs to apply for.
For non-artists, letâs give you a little perspective.
For me, an illustration takes a bare minimum of 6 hours. Mind you, thatâs JUST the drawing part. Not the research, or the communications, or gathering information. Just drawing.
Thatâs if itâs a simple illustration.
My art deco or more detailed stuff can take 20+ hours each.
Even simple, cartoony things still take at least 3 hours.
Letâs go with the second one. 2 illustrations for $25. Figuring 6 hours each. 12 hours total, for JUST the drawings. Thatâs approximately $2.08/hour.Â
Asking these prices is an insult. But whatâs even more hurtful is there are people out there that will take these jobs. Which only encourages rates like this to be acceptable. And there are people who will try to say these are just what you have to do to get started.
I believed that. So my first coloring gigs were just $10/page. The day someone offered me $25/page for just flatting work, I realized just how wrong Iâd been. Iâm still not making the rates Iâd like, but now I refuse anything below $25/page. Because there is value in my time.
In any standardized industry, even ones that pay piece rate over hourly, these numbers are criminal.
Do your fellow artists a favor. Never accept jobs like these. There are others that pay legitimate rates. Or at least closer to legitimate.
Such baby bullshit. Donât even get out of bed for these rates.
If you are an artist who wants to make money off their art, I highly suggest you buy The Graphic Artistâs Guild Handbook. It goes in depth about copyright issues and even contains contract and model release templates. The 2013 book *I believe* states the average professional charges $72 an hour. This article calculated that to make a 40k annual salary you would need to charge about $60 per hour.
After graduating from Art Center in 2012, I think I asked for somewhere between $35-45 an hour and got laughed at by multiple big name clients, which was infuriating, sadly expected, and terrifying with over $100K worth of student loans staring me in the face. If they tell you it will be âgreat exposureâ thatâs a red flag. Ask yourself how their exposure can compare to your Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr and Facebook pages combined?Â
And when you do get a decent paying gig, PROTECT YOURSELF. You have the right to negotiate and revise a contract. Do not start a job until you have a contract signed. If they donât provide you with one, MAKE ONE. And make sure you have your bases covered. You can specify in a contract that maybe two revisions are included in your cost, and if they ask you to revise the piece more than twice, they will have to pay extra. In terms of payment schedule, I usually do the 50/50 Method (50% before, 50% after) or the 3/3/3 Method (1/3 before, 1/3 in the middle, 1/3 after all work has been received). Both of those are pretty standard in the industry, as they guarantee you will get compensated for your time, even if the job goes bad.
Remember you have a skill, and you have spent time honing that skill and you deserve to be adequately paid for that time and effort. You will have clients dismiss you because, honest to God they think, âWell, I could do that if I wanted. Hell, my five year old does it now.â No they canât, because they didnât, they donât, they wonât and they probably never will. And good luck hiring a five year old. They canât keep a fucking deadline.
And in a last ditch effort theyâll say, âBut that drawing only took you an hour!â Son, that drawing took me 20. fucking. years.
10 Dollars for 1 minute of animation. Â Oh my god my heart. Â It took my team 6 months and a team of 12 to make a 4 minute short.Â
The Graphic Artistâs Guild Handbook
I second this book! Iâve had it for several years now, and itâs been a HUGE help in my work as a freelance artist. It gives great advice on what to charge for different areas of art!
Please remember. Your art is worth a respectable payment! Accepting ridiculously low prices actually hurts the arts/illustration/animation communities because it makes employers believe they can employ people without offering decent pay.
Check the internet if you need help figuring out what you should be charging for your commissions. Invest in the books that will inform you professionally, and put your foot down if you think someone is trying to cheat you out of your time and hard work. You have a right to refuse a job, and/or request decent payment. If your employer denies a you decent pay, well then theyâre probably not a very good employer. Do not undersell your skills. it is bad for the art community and you are worth more then that.
