Stretch my arms, pick up my phone, launch UberSocial (Twitter client), check my mentions/DMs, reply where necessary, before browsing through my Timeline resisting the urge to engage in so many different discussions by Chelsea Fans. That’s how most mornings are for me these days. Not the best way to start a day as most of these discussions contain a lot of silly player suggestions that get me mad. People seem to want everyone, and now too! Many blues would be happy if we signed Pastore, Van Der Wiel, Modric and Arturo Vidal; threw Lukaku and Neymar upfront; and acquired Eden Hazard the Wing Wizard. They would support that we ship out Malouda, Anelka, Kalou, Mikel and Bosingwa, maybe Drogba and Essien too. (The same fans who complained when we sold Mancienne, Tore and Sala all at once, begging for our dear club to give youth a chance for once - discussion for another day) Don't get me wrong, while most of those transfers appeal to me, I find such activity very disturbing. Aside the cliche of new players adapting to a new team, new league and new country, we have a new manager and he has a plan. Its too early in the transfer window to get impatient and whiny over the transfer craze. I cant say I'm not jealous that Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool have already made 4-5 signings. I want my team to compete at a high level that we’re capable of too, but at the same time I have to look deeper than most. Manchester United for example have lost Neville, Scholes, Van Der Sar, O’Shea and Brown this year, maybe Gibson later. We’ve lost no single player. We’ve added Torres, Oriol, Luiz and Thibaut Courtois. “Bertrand, Patrick Van Aanholt and Daniel Sturridge are back from loans and this has a value for us and it must have a value for the Chelsea supporters as well, because we are not making decisions lightly.” - Andre Villas Boas For a side that has already spent 75million on transfers one year, I’m with AVB on this one. We need to stop signing players just because they're quality or have massive potential, but rather, because they are actually what we need and are a perfect fit in terms of adjustment, team style, squad regulations etc. We’ve made many mistakes in the past and the most recent one in my honest opinion is the signing of Fernando Torres. Thats not for us to decide because we don’t really know what the managers intentions are strategy-wise. I’m not trying to dismiss suggestions of players that can do a good job for the team, but the expert-tone with which most people say “We need a new right-back, a creative midfielder and wingers” is nothing more than an opinion. You may have your idea of how you want the team to look as most of you play Football Manager - but remember - you’re not the manager. The suggestion we seem to be lacking the most in at the moment is in midfield, aside the creativity that every Tom, Dick and Harry suggests, we might need a cover player for Essien. On one hand, if we choose to play a 4-4-2 with wingers most of the time, we wont need more than 5 midfielders (Ramires, Mikel, Lampard, Benayoun and McEachran) challenging for the 2 central midfield positions till Essien returns or the January window if necessary. That would mean an investment in a right winger, and cutting-down of our center forwards from 5 to 4. We don't make that choice. So many decisions for Villas-Boas to make and he, sorry I mean we, are assessing things. We have an intelligent manager that knows what he’s doing and we need to trust him to lead this club in the right direction which is winning titles, playing good football and developing our own players. He’s in charge and we can only watch, so instead of complaining that “Chelsea have made no big signings every morning”, lets back him and what he’s trying to do. If not, why do criticize Roman for impatience? PS: Villas-Boas didn't have a Modric or Pastore-type player in his Porto first XI, but this is Chelsea and i don't expect him to use the exact same system.
