30 - Reflective Essay
The idea for this project came to me as I wanted to explore the loneliness of becoming someone/ the alienation from everyone else while you figure yourself out; holding on to the past; feeling stuck on your circumstances ā and how suffocating these pressures are.
The mosquito net was the first object I knew I wanted to use as it represents the suffocating cocoon that is finding yourself; It (alongside the nostalgic tones in the video and its silence) captures the loneliness that comes with becoming someone.
The stuffed animal represents what youāre not ready to let go of. The medication package represents the circumstances that you feel that imprison you. The postcard represents the longing for someone you no longer are. At last, the video ā the new you trying to break free.
There were a few ideas that I tried but didnāt like: green screening my hands and using sound. I felt like neither would add more to the project; I wanted the video to be filmed in the place that the net would be installed to make the audience feel that it could be their hand and I felt like the silence would capture better my idea.
The net idea was successful ā easy to set up and a beautiful fabric to use in an installation. I think the objects were successful too, as they all have a different meaning even though sewing them into the net wasnāt very successful and might look messy.
I donāt think the video was successful as I treated it as another object on the net and I didnāt spend enough time editing it.
My biggest challenge was a lack of inspiration caused by the pressure I put on myself to have everything perfect. I only overcame it when I realised that the deadline was close. If I had had more time, I wouldāve edited the video better and explored more within the artists I chose.
I think my project connected to all of my artists; Pipilotti Rist inspired me to film my hands reaching out (Selfless in a bath of lava) and to explore a dreamier, immersive installation (Sip My Ocean). Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew inspired me to explore a 3D effect of projection on my net. With Petra Collinsās work I realised the direction I wanted to take with my project ā make it intimate and nostalgic and explore coming of age. With Sofia Coppola I decided I wanted to use the same blue-toned colour palette as her for my video. Sue de Beer inspired me to explore what it means to come of age as a woman. With Mike Kelleyās work I decided I wanted to explore childhood and how that takes part into who we become as adults. With Maria ImaginĆ”rioās work I decided to use pastel colours projected on to my net, same as Molly Soda; whose work helped me figure out what colour I wanted projected on my net ā pink to represent femininity.
All of this researched shaped my exploration of identity and I will take all of these ideas forward.
Hands playing with and scratching the net, as suggested by my tutor.
28 - Setting Up the Installation
Since Iām presenting my project in the Studio instead of in the Workshop room, I hooked 6 different hooks to hold the net. I previously had planned to use the pole in the Workshop room to hold it but I prefer how it looks hooked.Ā
I also tested the pink light I am going to use and its intensity.
Even though I tested with sound (see next post) I donāt want to use sound in this installation as I donāt think it will add anything new to it/it will distract the audience from the installation and video.
27 - The Objects
As planned, here is my stuffed animal, my medication package and my postcard. Iām going to sew them to the net with white thread.

26 - Green Screen Tests
On Friday the 8th I filmed these tests but I ended up not liking them. I want to go back to my original idea of filming in the installation.
25 - What (hopefully) the Installation is Going to Look Like
Iāve been experimenting setting up my installation in the Workshop room (B07) and Iāve been using the poles in there to hoist my net. I plan on hooking its centre and another part to the ceiling and using a pole on one of its sides to hold it, to make it look like a tent.
24 - Idea Updates
Iām deciding whether I should have the lights on or off during the installation. If I have them off, I want to know if I can have a different light project - projecting a colour similar toĀ āblue hourā (photographic inspiration below)
This last picture is taken fromĀ āThe Virgin Suicidesā which I have researched and discussed before (see post #9)
If that is not possible,Ā āblue hourā is still the colour palette Iām going for in my video - I will see if I can edit these tones onto my video using Adobe Premiere Pro.
Iāve also considered filming my hands in green screen instead of inside the installation. This way I can edit every unnecessary thing out and just project my hands.Ā I will try that tomorrow and see if I like it.
23 - What is Coming Of Age?
While doing my research for this project one of the themesĀ that kept popping up in the artists that I chose was: coming of age.
But what does it mean to come of age?Ā
To come of age is toĀ āgrow upā,Ā āmatureā. And I think this fits well with the theme that was given to us - identity - and the way Iām trying to explore it - to become someone.
22 - Artist Research: Molly Soda
This artist was mentioned in ourĀ āFinal Tweaksā session. I chose her because of her exploration of womanhood and coming of age in the era of social media - and finding yourself and your identity within it, which connects to my theme.
I want to embrace hyper femininity in my work like Soda did - not just in this project, I want to take this forward. Inspired by her use of pink light, I decided I am going to reflect a pink light on to my net.

21 - Artist Research: Maria ImaginƔrio - Marie Antoinette Says Au Revoir
I chose this artist because of her exploration of childhood themes and feminine colours. I want to use light pastel colours in my installation just like ImaginĆ”rio used in her piece. She has inspired me to explore the theme of childhood and dreaminess. I feel like she is relevant to the theme of identity as she uses hyper feminine colours and thatās part of what Iām going to explore. I want to take forward her use of toys and pastel colours in future projects.
20 - Final Tweaks Notes
On Tuesday, the 5th, we had our second crit notes. I was advised by my tutor to play with sound of my hands against the fabric to conjugate with the video of my hands reaching out. Classmate A suggested I would try using a second net but since the assessment is less than a week away I wonāt be able to get another one from Amazon. Classmate B suggested I would book a room with a higher ceiling but after talking to a different classmate I realised I want the room to have a lower ceiling to give you the feeling of oppression.Ā
Tutor also advised that every object in the room of the installation counts so I plan on taking everything besides the horizontal pole that will hold one side of my net and the projector - a smaller model so itās less noticeable.
Classmate C suggested I would speak in Portuguese in my video with my hands to express the feelings of being of a different nationality and while I like the idea I donāt planning on speaking in the video.Ā
Molly Soda was also mentioned so Iāve looked into her work and researched her for my project.
19 - First Installation Test
While I was setting up the net, classmate A was in the room with me and suggested I would set it up as a tent. I did it and liked how it looked so Iām keeping it that way. Iām planning on making my video circular so it fits perfectly inside the ceiling of the net. I still donāt know what to do with sound.
I plan on taking out the chair and the black thing holding up the projector from the room.Ā
As Iām going to project my video upwards, Iām going to have to find an object to put under my projector but set it up in a way that people donāt stumble on it.
Iām still deciding if I should have the lights on or off during the presentation.
18 - Video Test
These two videos are my first camera tests to project onto the net. My general idea is to have a video of my hands reaching out to the ceiling of the fabric. I filmed these at home where I have the net hanging. In my final video I donāt plan on having the window showing. Iām thinking of filming it in the place where the net is going to be hanging during presentation so you call feel like that hand is there while you look at the installation.
17 - Video Idea
The video part of my project will be of my hands reaching out, underneath the net as if trying to break free. I plan on editing the video in blue tones and playing it on a loop.

16 - Artist Research: Mike Kelley - Eviscerated Corpse
What drew me in to this installation, like his workĀ āDeodorized Central Mass with Satellitesā, was his use of stuffed animals since Iām planning on attaching a small stuffed animal to my net. What inspired me however was the artistās dark perception of childhood - somethingĀ ācuteā on the surface but horrifying and gory underneath.Ā The artist referred to it asĀ āthe stuffed animal is a pseudo-child, a cutified sexless being which represents the adultās perfect model of a child - a neutered pet.ā This piece inspired me to explore the dark side of childhood and how later on that can affect an adultās sense of identity - which fits the theme. I want to not only use now but also take forward Kelleyās use of toys in aĀ ādarkerā sense.
15 - Artist Research: Mike Kelley -Ā Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites
I chose this piece because of its representation of childhood - which inspired me to explore how your childhood affects your identity later on and I want to use a colourful stuffed animal in my project to represent it. I hope to take forward his themes of childhood.
