Surfing Lessons ✼ Part One

JJ Maybank was completely oblivious to your existence, and you tried to convince yourself that you were okay with that.

JJ was a busboy at the Island Club Resort, an establishment only accessible to the elite of the elite in the Outer Banks. Your family have been members for generations. 

Growing up, you didn’t see the appeal in the Island Club. Spending your free time watching your dad drink champagne with middle-aged white men and talk about the latest yacht model hardly sparked your interest. 

Conversation was limited to materialistic things and what Top 20 school everyone’s kids were going to attend next fall. You would much rather learn to surf on the pretty Figure 8 beaches, but Topper made sure you knew you weren’t invited.

So, you avoided going to the Island Club at all costs, only going for Midsummer and the Fourth of July.

However, when you were fifteen, the new busboy caught your eye. His blonde hair was unkempt and fell in front of his eyes when he cleared the tables. Before you could stop yourself, your cheeks tinged a light crimson.
