Redeemed villains are genuinely some of my favourite characters as they're basically an allegory for someone's who has hit rock bottom and yet despite that learnt to trust again, to laugh again, to love again.

Their pain no longer consumes their actions, but rather a bespoke need to make things better for those who are in danger of starting their own villain arc.

They're lost souls who had the chance to see that things could be different for them, for everyone, and took it rather than running away or just ignoring it.

It always makes me really emotional to watch somebody who felt that betrayed by the world learn to love it again and everything it offers.

Another common trope I like to see is how they can empathise with a hero when they notice familiar patterns of behaviour they used to have when they felt so frustrated by the world.

#genuinely 10/10 character trait when written really well #i obvs don't think the redeemed's actions should be forgiven the second they turn a new leaf #it should be a slow process of the villain actually showing how they're changing for the better #showing them doing good things that juxtapose against their bad #showing them caring for the people they once used to fight #even then their actions can't ever be forgiven really but instead comes a new age where they can do everything they can to protect people #media analysis #character tropes #funkyotter talks media
