Okay, so, a while back I did a post about figuring out names for the Bulls if they were genderswapped as a fun thought exercise (you can find that post here). I had a lot of fun doing that, so I decided I'd have another go, this time with the Captans and with bonus speculation on how the world changes them/changes around them. Hopefully, things are a bit more readable layout-wise this time around.
(Most of the meanings of names listed here have been taken from behindthename.com. It's an incredibly useful site and I highly reccomend it for naming characters.)
Sukehiro
Original name meaning: "mediate/interfere" 「介」, and "large" 「大」
As mentioned previously, credit for Yami's female name goes entirely to @/beanmarketmafia because I wouldn’t even know where to start with Japenese names.
Possible options: Sayoko - From Japanese 小 (sa) meaning "small", 夜 (yo) meaning "night" and 子 (ko) meaning "child".
Honestly, I don't think things change for Yami that much if she's a woman rather than a man; there's a bit more pushback from the noble factions but I think the fact that she's a foreigner tops any gender problems people may have. Though, that being said, men are generally allowed to be a lot more angry and moody than women are and there'd likely be rumours that she only got her position due to fucking Julius.
William
Original name meaning: From the Germanic name Willehelm meaning "will helmet", composed of the elements willo "will, desire" and helm "helmet, protection".
For William I'd personally go down the route of famous queens and conquerors
Possible options:
Willa - feminine form of William
Matilda - Empress Matilda, also known as Empress Maud, was Holy Roman Empress as the consort of Emperor Henry V from 1110 until his death in 1125. She was the first woman to lay claim to the English throne and ended up locked in a bloody civil war known as The Anarchy with her cousin Stephen of Blois after he usurped her right to the crown as the only legitimate heir of Henry I - From the Germanic name Mahthilt meaning "strength in battle", from the elements maht "might, strength" and hilt "battle".
Victoria - Britain's longest regining monarch until Elizabeth II and head of the British Empire at its height - Means "victory" in Latin, being borne by the Roman goddess of victory. It is also a feminine form of Victor [Roman cognomen meaning "victor, conqueror" in Latin] and Victorius [Roman name that was a variant of Victor].
Elizabeth - From Ἐλισάβετ (Elisabet), the Greek form of the Hebrew name אֱלִישֶׁבַע (ʾElishevaʿ) meaning "my God is an oath", derived from the roots אֵל (ʾel) referring to the Hebrew God and שָׁבַע (shavaʿ) meaning "oath".
Alexandra - Feminine form of Alexander [Latinized form of the Greek name Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexandros), which meant "defending men" from Greek ἀλέξω (alexo) meaning "to defend, help" and ἀνήρ (aner) meaning "man" (genitive ἀνδρός)]
Isabella - Latinate form of Isabel [Medieval Occitan form of Elizabeth {see above}]. This name was borne by many medieval royals, including queens consort of England, France, Portugal, the Holy Roman Empire and Hungary, as well as the powerful ruling queen Isabella of Castile (properly called Isabel).
William's fun to consider bc the facial disfgurment is suddenly a much bigger issues. Men don't get graded on their appearance the same way women do. Oh, sure, being attractive is a bonus, but not being attractive isn't treated as a moral failing. When we discussed this, Tam (@/funky-sea-cryptid) had the idea of William acting hyper-feminine to distance herself from Patri. She'd never dress like that, she'd never do anything of those things. Guys, she's just a girl! (which, in a world where William is the only one swapped would drive Charlotte mad and in a world where other people get swapped would drive Jack and Yami mad)
Nozel
Original name meaning: Hebrew for "liquid, fluid"
I had to do some diving to get the meaning of Nozel and ended up pulling it from the trivia section of his wiki page bc I was getting nothing. I've seen a lot of people claim that it's mean to be a version of Noel but that's never sat right with me considering Noelle. I tried to stick to names starting with "N" or "S" to fit the family theme
Possible options:
Sarita - my personal choice - 1) Means "flowing" in Sanskrit. 2) Spanish diminutive of Sara [Form of Sarah {From the Hebrew name שָׂרָה (Sara) meaning "lady, princess, noblewoman"} used in various languages].
Nahla - Means "a drink of water" in Arabic.
Nufar - Means "water lily" in Hebrew,
Saraswati - Means "possessing water" from Sanskrit सरस् (saras) meaning "fluid, water, lake" and वती (vatī) meaning "having".
Su - 1) Means "water" in Turkish 2)From Chinese 素 (sù) meaning "plain, simple" or 肃 (sù) meaning "respectful"
Callirrhoe - From the Greek name Καλλιρρόη (Kallirrhoe), derived from the word καλλίρρους (kallirrhous) meaning "beautiful flowing".
Female Nozel- female Nozel has even more of a complex about Acier, quite frankly. Not only has she failed to see her mother, not only does she see her mother in her baby sister, she probably sees her mother every time she looks in a mirror. Can you imagine that? Every time you so much as look at yourself, you're confronted with what you consider to be your greatest failure.
Fuegoleon
Original name meaning: comprised of the Spanish fuego (fire) and león (lion)
Obviously any name I give him has to include either fire or lion in it's meaning
Possible options:
Brenda - Feminine form of the Old Norse name Brandr, meaning "fire, torch, sword", which was brought to Britain in the Middle Ages. This name is sometimes used as a feminine form of Brendan [From Brendanus, the Latinized form of the Old Irish name Bréanainn, which was derived from Old Welsh breenhin meaning "king, prince".]
Leonilda - my personal choice - From a Germanic name composed of the elements lewo "lion" (of Latin origin) and hilt "battle".
Lyones - Variant of Lyonesse [Means "lioness" in Middle English].
Fem!Fuegoleon in not Mereoleona 2.0. Even if you go full genderswap in the world and have a Masc!Mereoleona, their personalities don't change. Feugoleon is still uptight and by-the-book and a stickler for rules and Mereoleona is feral in the woods. What changes is how the world views them because of this. Feugoleon is most likely facing the pressure of the fact that she's the second-choice. She's the back-up, the spare heir. Mereoleona gets to run wild so she has to pick up the peices (I mean, this is straight canon but likely more obvious in a world with Fem!Fuegoleon, especially with a Masc!Mereoleona bc women are generally expected to clean up after people, especially men). She will never be Mereoleona, but Fuegoleon has a stubborn streak a mile wide so she's gonna try and prove herself worthy anyway.
Rill
Original name meaning: Brook
No matter how much digging I did, I couldn't find a meaning anywhere, other than the fact that it's another word for a brook, so that was the only route I had to follow
Possible options:
Callirrhoe - From the Greek name Καλλιρρόη (Kallirrhoe), derived from the word καλλίρρους (kallirrhous) meaning "beautiful flowing".
Beck - From a surname of English, German or Scandinavian origins, all derived from related words meaning "stream". As a feminine name, in some cases it is a short form of Rebecca [From the Hebrew name רִבְקָה (Rivqa), probably from a Semitic root meaning "join, tie, snare"].
Honestly, I can't see Rill being all that different.
Dorothy
Original name meaning: Usual English form of Dorothea [Feminine form of the Greek name Δωρόθεος (Dorotheos), which meant "gift of god" from Greek δῶρον (doron) meaning "gift" and θεός (theos) meaning "god"].
Honestly, both of these options are just vibes based
Possible options:
Theodore - From the Greek name Θεόδωρος (Theodoros), which meant "gift of god" from Greek θεός (theos) meaning "god" and δῶρον (doron) meaning "gift". The name Dorothea is derived from the same roots in reverse order
Orpheus - Perhaps related to Greek ὄρφνη (orphne) meaning "the darkness of night".
Male Dorothy has some interesting connotations and issues, especially if the rest of the Witches aren't genderswapped. I think he'd feel like he was stuck in the wrong body and possibly go either hyper feminine or hyper masculine to compensate.
Kaiser
Original name meaning: German form of the Roman title Caesar (see Caesar [From a Roman cognomen that possibly meant "hairy", from Latin caesaries "hair"]). It is not used as a given name in Germany itself. Also the title historically used by German Emperors
For Kaiser I felt like I had to stick to German and Germanic names that had noble connotations and these were the two I liked the best.
Possible options:
Adallinda - Derived from the Old German elements adal "noble" and lind "soft, flexible, tender".
Edeltraud - Means "noble strength", derived from the Old German elements adal "noble" and drud "strength".
Ethelind - my personal choice - Variant of Adelind [Anglicized form of Adalindis {Variant of Adallinda (see above)}]
Much like Rill, I can't see there being that much of a difference between canon!Kaiser and fem!Kaiser.
Jack
Original name meaning: Derived from Jackin (earlier Jankin), a medieval diminutive of John [English form of Iohannes, the Latin form of the Greek name Ἰωάννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yoḥanan). It means "Yahweh is gracious", {Yahweh - A name of the Hebrew God, represented in Hebrew by the Tetragrammaton ("four letters") יהוה (Yod Heh Vav Heh), which was transliterated into Roman script as Y H W H. The name may have originally been derived from the Hebrew root הָוָה (hawa) meaning "to be, to exist, to become".} from the roots יוֹ (yo) referring to the Hebrew God and חָנַן (ḥanan) meaning "to be gracious"]. There could be some early influence from the unrelated French name Jacques [see Jacqueline below for the meaning of Jacques]. It is often regarded as an independent name. During the Middle Ages it was very common, and it became a slang word meaning "man", as seen in the terms jack-o'-lantern, jack-in-the-box, lumberjack and so on. It was frequently used in fairy tales and nursery rhymes, such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack and Jill, Little Jack Horner, and Jack Sprat.
Jack's a fun one to try and come up with a genderswapped name for bc there's so many different routes you could go. There's the easy genderswap, there's the fairytale/nursery rhyme angle, or you could use the fact that Jack was the everyman name like John is now (which is why the name Jack comes up so much in folklore, to the point where there's a type of fairytale called Jack Tales). Or you can take the killer angle and have your pic of the many, many serial killers out there.
Possible options:
Jacqueline - straight genderswap, personally I think it's a bit fancy for a kid from the mountains but it's the most obvious one - French feminine form of Jacques (French form of Iacobus, the New Testament Latin form of James. [English form of the Late Latin name Iacomus, a variant of the Biblical Latin form Iacobus, from the Hebrew name Yaʿaqov (see Jacob {From the Latin Iacob, which was from the Greek Ἰακώβ (Iakob), which was from the Hebrew name יַעֲקֹב (Yaʿaqov). In the Old Testament Jacob (later called Israel) is the son of Isaac and Rebecca and the father of the twelve founders of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was born holding his twin brother Esau's heel, and his name is explained as meaning "holder of the heel" or "supplanter". Other theories claim that it is in fact derived from a hypothetical name like יַעֲקֹבְאֵל (Yaʿaqovʾel) meaning "may God protect"})])
Jackie - my personal choice if I'm going with straight genderswap - Diminutive of Jack or Jacqueline. See above for full meaning of those names, I'm not typing it all out again.
Jill - the obvious nursery rhyme angle, I'm pretty sure every kid that grew up in predominantely English-speaking has heard Jack and Jill - Short form of Gillian. [Medieval English feminine form of Julian. {From the Roman name Iulianus, which was derived from the family name Julius. (Roman family name that was possibly derived from Greek ἴουλος (ioulos) meaning "downy-bearded". Alternatively, it could be related to the name of the Roman god Jupiter. [From Latin Iuppiter, which was ultimately derived from the vocative form of Indo-European *Dyēws-pətēr, composed of the elements Dyēws (see Zeus {The name of a Greek god, related to the old Indo-European god *Dyēws, from the root *dyew- meaning "sky" or "shine". This theonym has cognates in other Indo-European languages including Latin Jupiter, Sanskrit Dyaus, and Old Norse Tyr}) and pətēr "father".])}]
Jane - the everyname name angle Jane as in Jane Doe - Medieval English form of Jehanne, an Old French feminine form of Iohannes (see John [above])
Joan - the other option for the everyman name angle which also includes the bonus of referencing Joan of Arc - Medieval English form of Johanne, an Old French form of Iohanna (see Joanna [English and Polish form of Latin Iohanna, which was derived from Greek Ἰωάννα (Ioanna), the feminine form of Ioannes (see John {above}).]). This was the usual English feminine form of John in the Middle Ages, but it was surpassed in popularity by Jane in the 17th century.
Mary - this one hits both the serial killer angle (Mary Ann Cotton is argued to be Britain's first female serial killer and widely regarded to be the deadliest) and the nursery rhyme angle - Usual English form of Maria, the Latin form of the New Testament Greek names Μαριάμ (Mariam) and Μαρία (Maria) — the spellings are interchangeable — which were from Hebrew מִרְיָם (Miryam), a name borne by the sister of Moses in the Old Testament. The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love".
Molly - a bit of a more obscure one if you want to hit the fairy tale angle, but Jack the Giant-Killer isn't the only tale out there of kids taking on giants and winning through cunning and bravery. Molly Whuppie is a girl who, with two sisters, ends up staying in a giants' castle. Over the course of the story, she tricks the giant into killing his three daughters instead of Molly and her sisters and after escaping goes back to steal more from the giant to secure her sisters' futures - Medieval diminutive of Mary (see above)
Female Jack is the one that would have the hardest time getting to where she is in canon. Canonically, people don't like having a Commoner for a Captain and canonially there haven't been that many female Captains. When the person who is very heavily implied to be the first Commoner Captain is also a woman? That's one hell of a mountain to have to climb.
Charlotte
Original name meaning: French feminine diminutive of Charles [French and English form of Carolus, the Latin form of the Germanic name Karl, which was derived from a word meaning "man" (Proto-Germanic *karlaz). However, an alternative theory states that it is derived from the common Germanic name element *harjaz meaning "army"].
For Charlotte, I went looking for names that had something to do with war and ones that felt like they matched her canon name vibe-wise.
Possible options:
Charles - the straight genderswap option - French and English form of Carolus, the Latin form of the Germanic name Karl, which was derived from a word meaning "man" (Proto-Germanic *karlaz). However, an alternative theory states that it is derived from the common Germanic name element *harjaz meaning "army"
Alexander - my personal pick - Latinized form of the Greek name Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexandros), which meant "defending men" from Greek ἀλέξω (alexo) meaning "to defend, help" and ἀνήρ (aner) meaning "man" (genitive ἀνδρός)
Casimir - I've actually used this name for an oc brother for her - English form of the Polish name Kazimierz, derived from the Slavic element kaziti "to destroy" combined with mirŭ "peace, world".
Bertrand - Derived from the Old German elements beraht meaning "bright" and rant meaning "rim (of a shield)".
Edgar - Derived from the Old English elements ead "wealth, fortune" and gar "spear"
Frederick - English form of an Old German name meaning "peaceful ruler", derived from fridu "peace" and rih "ruler, king"
Charlotte. Oh, Charlotte. I've left her to the end bc oh boy, Masc!Lotta has Issues. If nothing else, unless you're going full genderswap, you have a man in charge of a squad full of women and they're most likely going to hate him bc he got his position due to nepotism and gender bias. Oh, and he'll never be able to understand their struggle bc, sure, he has the curse, but that's the only problem he has. In every other respect, the deck is stacked in his favour. Can you imagine trying to lead people who outright Do Not Like You? Sure, they'll listen to you, and, hey, maybe they even respect you, but they don't like you. And if you have a world where the entirety of the captains have been gender-swapped (without the rest of the world swapping), well, you've then got the struggle of being the most popular Captain- but you're not the most popular because people like you (thought people may well like you). No, you're the most popular because they dislike everyone else more. And you don't even have the unconditional support of your squad any more! You're on your own because no matter how bad things suck for you, they suck for everyone else more and nobody will listen to a single word you say in complaint.
Quite frankly, I think Masc!Charlotte would go out of his way to try and make himself likeable.
got this moth man on my mind now, gee thanks @funky-sea-cryptid

I always feel so cheated in stories when characters are walking around with this Big Guilt and then...you find out that the thing wasn't their fault at all. And not in a "they thought they did it but it turns out they were set up" way, or even a "accepting that just because they did A which caused B which caused C it doesn't mean C was their fault", way but where they finally lay out the sequence of events and it's clear that any thinking person would not connect them. Like, fucking commit!!! The character isn't LESS compelling if they actually did the thing! You can't have the haunted brooding meow meow who is...also completely blameless

laughing about me shutting myself in the pantry to scream BUT BUDDY I DONT SEE ANYTHING FUNNY IN THIS FUCKING HOUSEEEEEEEEEEE
Something I've observed when it comes to shipping is that I find I'm not a fan of ships where the lion's share of all fan meta, gifs, and theorizing center around only one half of the ship, Character A.
Character B's attraction to the other is just sort of 'assumed' and almost hand-waved away as being inevitable.
This is, despite the fact, that Character B has expressed overt attraction and/or feelings for a Character C in canon, and so the ship would actually benefit from exploring why they would choose A over C.
It's especially egregious when Character B has very complicated feelings or even actively dislikes character A.
This often happens when A is blorbo-bait, and so the shippers don't really have much to say about B at all outside of fawning love interest and just sort of using them as a prop for A's attractions.

proxy relationship not a trope to anyone else but me which is a shame. Does no one else care abt the beautiful dynamic potential of conducting an entire shameful affair with someone just to get closer to their partner...Indirect kiss through some other guy. Possibilities !
some dynamics under this umbrella (feel free to add more im gonna forget some)
a wants b, b is with c, and a cant have b, so a gets with c
a and b both want c so they form a relationship out of mutual Well You Also Know C So You Get It And Also You Are Close As I Can Reallt Get To Them
a and b both want Each Other but they dont believe they can do that (whether or not theyre right is frankly irrelevant!! i dont care if they are cursed or just stupid) so they use c as a vehicle for their relationship
"this sounds really toxic and objectifying"yeapppp. 👍
IMPORTANT ALSO THANK YOU PIPER !!
Happy Artfight!! Follow me @beanmarketmafia and catch these hands :P 💧
