Guess Who's Back... Back Again...

THE AMPHIBIOUS DREAM KING OF SUBCON IS HERE! WART IS BACK BAAAABBBYYYY!!!! This is absolutely crazy!

Sure we've technically seen Wart as recently as the remake of "Link's Awakening" for the Switch (Which you could argue may not be the same Wart because they are referred to in the Zelda game as "Mamu" but... it's Wart) and I guess before that being the GBA re-release of "Super Mario Advance" which is just Super Mario Bros. 2 with a few upgrades... but if you take into consideration that the last true first and last appearance of Wart was in "Doki Doki Panic" for the Family Computer Disk System... in... 1987! This is truly amazing. That's like... 38 years since a change to the character? FUCK. YES. I can't wait to see what cheesey voice and theme song they give to him. Maybe I was right to title this as "Guess Who's Back" Imagine not only we get an Eminem theme intro but Slim Shady himself voices the slippery ruler? HAHAHAHAHA. Nothing is off the table now. Not to mention considering the music they used in the first movie... oh the Mario Bros. are working in Brooklyn... NO SLEEP TILL... BROOKLYN!

When it came to the first movie I wished they hit some deep cuts and they didn't... seeing this now... All the cards are on the table. That being said, we are going into space for this movie. I would not be surprised if we saw another deep cut. Daisy hasn't been seen yet BUT we have a desert world... space... could we maybe see...

Ummm... Super Mario Titans?... What?!

Okay so first impressions of this leak... AI slop? A well made elaborate ruse? Just look at that SUPER Super Mario... That looks so WEIRD! That being said. After reading the supposed plot to this game... I dig it!

So along with this "leak" there was a description of what the game is:

It's called "Super Mario Titans" and it's an open-world game where, in each environment, you find an ally and level up with them through platforming levels until they're able to become a Superhero alongside Mario to take on the boss of that world.

Once you defeat the boss, you obtain one of 10 jewels.

In each environment, there are warp portals that take you to traditional platforming stages. These stages aren't lazy like Mario Odyssey, but are more in line with what you see in Mario 3D World.

In these stages, you can use both Mario's and your ally's mechanics to complete levels and level them up. You level them up by beaing the stages.

Some of these levels are blocked off unless you have a certain number of emblems. Meaning you need to explore the open world to unlock them.

Some environments in the open world include, a honeycomb beach hybrid, with massive beehive jet skis and more. A vertical cloud medieval village location with giant stingrays and whales in the clouds. An abandoned dinosaur jungle and theme park mashup. A world that takes place on a giant airship where Bowser literally becomes Mario's ally. The "real" final boss took control over what Bowser thought he had. An underground cave made of purple jewels and grape soda. a sci-fi Arabian desert that combines the future and the past ect.

I tend to look into things WAY too seriously and I've learned over the years when it comes to Super Mario lore... don't take it too serious. That being said, here is a bizarre theory I had... Again... don't come back at this saying "THIS IS REDICULOUS! WHY WOULD..." ...I know. This is bag of cats crazy. So let me explain...

In this new trailer for the Mario Galaxy Movie there is a part where Yoshi is holding what looks like the Super Scope.

(the Super Scope for those who don't know, was a gun controller used for games on the Super Nintendo like "Yoshi's Safari")

The weird thing that occurred to me was the Super Scope looks blue? That made me think of how they used the Super Scope in the 90's Super Mario Brothers movie. (if you haven't seen that movie do yourself a favor and watch it NOW)

I'm sure the idea behind making the Super Scope look blue and just not like the actual Super Scope was, we need to distance ourselves from the actual product while still using it? That being said the function of the Super Scope in the 90's movie was a "De-Evolution" gun. It did exactly what you'd think it would do with that name.

That's what got me thinking about why in the scene where Yoshi is holding the Super Scope, why are the Mario Brothers babies?

Again, I'm sure this is all nutty nothings and maybe the next gen of Mario Bros. are just featured in this movie... or maybe? the Super Scope is a Time Gun?

That's where my theory started to grow.

Super Mario Brothers 2 in the... Super Mario Movie 2?

The hype train is out of the station after the new trailer dropped today. There's not much to say. It looks neat! One thing that is absolutely batshit fuckin bananas is it appears that not onlt is Birdo in the movie BUT... SO IS MOUSER AND CLAWGRIP?!?!?

I don't think we've seen these characters since Super Mario Brothers 2!? Wild!

I heard rumors a while back that part of the story is that Bowser Jr. hires a team to help him get Bowser back... Could it be he hires Wart and his gang? Could we see these obscure characters make a come back? What's next... Geno?... Mallow?

It's neat to note as well that these characters appear in a casino like area and in SMB2 the way you could gain lives was a slot machine at the end of levels.

I'm so surprised to see those characters. Even if it's a small cameo for just that one scene I'm still so excited!

Pokemon AFK'nex Grind Machine

I didn't have much faith in Pokémon Legends ZA when it was first announced but I bought it and over a hundred hours later I'm going to say it's an awesome Pokémon game. Possibly one of my favorite Pokemon games... and I've been playing since Red and Blue!

One of the last achievements you need to get is "complete 1000 battles" You have to get this to get the "shiny charm"

I'm sitting at around 776 battles...

...my first reaction to this was... FUCK... but i figured there has to be a way to cheese this...

Through a little research it was revealed if you went to the restaurant "Le Nah" you could repeat this gauntlet if you had the controller means to do so... that's why I made the AFK'nex Machine!

This machine hits the "A" button which continues any part of the battle restaurant dialogue or battle initiation or attack button to continue. The other part of the machine hits the back "ZL" trigger button which allows the Pokémon when in battle to lock on and attack the apposing Pokémon.

I went to bed around midnight and woke up to not only enough battles fought, but a lot of money in my Pokémon bank account.

PUBLIC DOMAIN WARS!

Okay... I know right off the bat people seeing this will say "AI SLOP!!!!" yes... yes... I agree. It's just AI fluff. As an artist I don't care for AI art. I only use Chat GPT to make silly pics here and there like "Make this picture of me look like LEGO" or "What would this picture look like as an oil painting?" Just for pure shits and giggles. One day I asked it to make a picture of me and the Pokémon Slowking together and it told me it couldn't because of copyright issues. Makes sense. That made me curious. Could it make art of characters that were in the public domain? turns out... yes it could! that's what led me to make this series of fake comic book covers! I know... it's AI slop garbage but hey... for shits and giggles... it was fun to put together.

a LEGO Pokemon Ghost?

Megablox is on the outs when it comes to Pokémon since LEGO has acquired it. They're doing their best to get the most out of the IP. I saw this sprite style display set and thought to myself, what Pokémon would I display if I made a set like that?

I put together, to the best of my abilities, a MissingNo. Pokemon display. I've always loved everything about MissingNo. and after seeing how they did Pikachu and the other starters, this is how MissingNo. could be built!

Take the Fruit, Take the Fruit and Scoot!

I've mentioned "People Under the Stairs" here before. They are my favorite hip-hop duo if not just my favorite musical artists period. Thes One and (RIP king) Double K. If you like hip-hop and don't know who these two are please… educate yourself. One of their more fun songs is called "Take the Fruit". It's a silly "educational" jokey song and samples a very weird track. Me and a friend have listened to this song since high school but we never knew where the sample came from. One day my friend was so excited to show me the where this sample actually came from. It's this obscure Pacman show song. He was so excited to show me because he knew I'm a video game nerd. Hahahaha. It was a great day…

Another great day happened just yesterday when I was walking around a garage sale and just happened to look down into this little pile of records. I don't even dig through crates but for my friend I always look. I shuffled and what do I see but this bright Pacman face. I flip it over and fuuuuuuuck me. "Take the Fruit and Scoot" is right there on side. Picked that shit up lickity split.

It's not worth much but to have the record my favorite artist sampled something from PLUS it's a video game reference is just chef's kiss

This isn't the first time the "People Under the Stairs" have referenced video games either!

I've mentioned this one before but I'll mention it again. They have a song called "Gamin' on Ya"

Classic Mario drawn sprites in motion!

I was doing some research on a project and just happened to stumble across a post by user "itmustbeyzzy" on reddit. They had hand drawn a bunch of old NES sprites. When it came to Mario, they drew enough to make a little animation... so I animated it! I had to edit some of the images to make a proper little "sprite sheet" but it wasn't much. Their art is so awesome and I was so happy to make it move. It looks like some sort of lost media.

I always loved Little Nemo the Dream Master so I drew some sprites!

I made some animations but I seem to have lost the original files... I wanted to just show them but I guess I can't just download them from my own posts lol. You can easily find more if you're interested :)

...and this isn't a vintage franchise BUT it is an amazing game. If you haven't heard of MINIT check it out! They use a very simple black and white pixel style. I took it upon myself to draw it in a bit of an upscaled style:

I absolutely LOVE to hand draw sprites and tiles. When it comes to retro games, to redraw them, it feels like channeling what the original artist wanted to do but couldn't because they were limited to the pixelated canvas. I love to see when a studio does the same. This brings me to a shout out...

So... Years ago when I was printing off game covers for Nintendo Switch games in a staples I came across some guy printing off images that looked JUST like classic sonic comics. Me and this gentleman got to talking and he was printing off his fan Sonic the hedgehog comics. We bonded over the old Sonic comics and exchanged emails. He emailed me some of his comics and I colored the intro panel he had drawn to his own Sonic comic.

It's been so long now that I don't have access to the comic but I do still have his email. This artists email is:

Pokemon Play & Control "Demo"

I made a post about this some time ago but recently I used the Petey Pest base to actually "bring it to life". There's no battle system or anything but you can see how traversing the original Pokémon map could fundamentally work! Add in a cool controllable battle system and it's not hard to believe how a fully platform/smash bros. style Pokémon game could work!

Here's some mock screenshots. The intro. A wild encounter. A battle with Brock and choosing your starter!

You'll notice I changed the eyes. I get some (if not all) people won't like this but my idea was, if you change something from the norm, you have to make a stylized choice as Pokémon sometimes does. It might not be the best, but for the sake of change, I went for it. This came from my characters I chose to feature in this. Their eyes have no whites in them so I figured unless there was a specific reason I would just take out the whites.

That being said the Pokémon platformer sprites used in this demo and screenshots aren't mine. They come from a talented artist named: ZebubAl-Zemmons

On top of this all the tiles originate from the official Pokémon GBA games. I edited them to make them fit into a platform style! It was a bit of a process but I think it translates pretty perfectly. Everything in the demo (outside Pokémon battles) translates the same as it would in the original game.

Here is a back and forth example of the path from Pellet town to Pewter city! I tried to make it as true to the original. Pathways you can only go up. Ledges that if you drop down you'll have to back track. Blocked paths you cant get by...

...and just incase you wanted to see the entire route layed out...

Also just a little Easter Egg. P&C which stands for Play and Control also stands for the two people that started this blog... Perry & Cary. Those are the two figures you see in the screenshots and video :)

...This is just a little add on but before I went for the GBA style I thought maybe the original Gameboy style would be better. Here's a little product of that. Oak's Lab in the original GB design but in a platformer style:

Gotta Go Fast!

I used to try to collect the Sonic the Hedgehog comics. I loved the stories and artwork. Especially the cover art. It was in an age where my access to the comics was limited to if my local Avondale had the latest issue AND I got it before someone else did. I tired to follow the story but some weeks I wouldn't get issues. Despite the gaps in story I would collect and try to follow and LOVED the Sonic comics.

I would've posted a picture of the copy I own of this comic but it's all wrinkled from me reading it over and over and drawing from it.

Anyways... the reason I posted those two panels from the comic in particular is because I always felt this was one one the greatest ways I've seen Sonic the Hedgehog use his speed.

At this point Sonic basically has never taken his shoes off. Those red pointy shoes are almost his feet as far as readers/gamers have been concerned. In this instance he is falling possibly to his death.

As he is falling he takes his shoes off and uses the dust in his shoes to make a bridge over to safety...

If you take into consideration the time it would take to take dust out of a shoe, throw it, and then run across it as a bridge... you truly understand the speed that Sonic operates on...

Right When I'm Out of the Game...

How appropriate once I decide to get out of the Aqua Mouse game a Pokemon Aqua Mouse pops up. Not only is it official Pokemon brand BUT it's a brand new Aqua Mouse type! I don't even have that one the Aqua Mouse chart!

It's been a long journey but I think this is where I stop. I got myself a great display of Aqua Mouses. I have another I use with my computer. I made the subreddit for Aqua Mouses and we are now at 5.5k members! That's crazy... although in the process we managed to ruin the market and now on eBay they are all RARE or COLLECTORS ITEMS and sell for up to 100$...
